Japanese language textbooks include information about Japanese society and Japanese culture as Japanese learners tend to be interested in such topics (Kondoh and Maruyama, 2001:101) and one of the most important purposes for Japanese learners is to get knowledge of Japanese habitual customs and culture (Byram, 1997:45; Kumagaya, 2008:213). On the other hand, Japanese language education has been criticized from other fields of research, as in the case of a sociologist who saw Japanese teachers as reproducing Nihonjinron (Theories of Japanese uniqueness) enthusiastically discussed between the 1970's and the beginning of the 1980's (Yoshino, 1997), and a comment from a intercultural education scholar who criticized Japanese teachers for their inadequate sensitivity towards cultural stereotypes (Kurachi, 2003). An important point of our research is the analysis of the influence of stereotypical information in Japanese textbooks to Japanese learners. In addition because of the indication that the Japanese teachers who lie between the textbook and Japanese learners reinforces the cultural stereotypes on the textbooks, we are going to investigate how the Japanese teachers recognize the stereotypical information in Japanese textbooks. This paper reports the result of the pilot investigation towards 11 Japanese teachers with full teaching experience. It points out the existence of the Japanese teachers who have awareness of the stereotypes on the Japanese text, the inclination of the points they point out as stereotypical information differing from Kurachi(2003), and the individual differences of judgment based on their individual experiences.

Recently the number of young Japanese language teachers teaching abroad has increasedwith the expansion of opportunities to teach Japanese language abroad. Although some reports point out problems for Japanese native teachers' collaboration with non-native teachers, they have not concretely reported what kind of difficulties the Japanese native teachers have and how they overcame their difficulties.This paper analyzes the changes of consciousness towards "the collaboration with non-native teachers" of a young Japanese native teacher who experienced teaching Japaneseabroad for a year by using PAC analysis interview. It observes that the process of the change of the interviewees consciousness, and concretely reports how s/he received and reflected the experiences beyond her/his expectation. It also points out elements for overcoming difficulties such as awareness of "Judgment stop" and the relationships with the various people s/he met during the teaching abroad.

This paper analyzes the results of PAC-analysis interview for a Japanese language learner with the face sheet designed by Maruyama & Ozawa (2008), before and during their study abroad. It discusses the effects the Japanese language learner receives from the Japanese texts, and how the Japanese language learner's character and their study abroad experiences affects their interpretations of the reading text. The results point to the importance of providing information on Japanese classes before their commencement of study abroad, the possibility that the significance of the study abroad experience is bigger than is often recognized by instructors, and the big influence of communication with family and friends. The result suggests the importance of the Japanese language class as the information resources about Japan, and suggests the necessity of the discussion about the development of Japanese texts, and the management of the Japanese classes with consideration of each student's unique experiences.

This paper discusses the preferable way to confront the fact that dedrograms used inPersonal Attitude Construct Analysis (PAC analysis) differ from software to software.Firstly, a subject Japanese teacher's (Teacher X) beliefs were examined by PAC analysistwice (one by SPSS software and the other by HALBAU software for clustering) and the contents of the two interviews were compared. Secondly, the same data was analyzed by other statistical analysis programs namely ALSCAL and K-means, and this paper discusses how and why the clustering differs. Lastly, this paper points out that researchers need to be attentive to such differences during and after interviews and to analyze their data using different statistic analysis programs to verify the adequacy of the dendrograms and interpretation of the interview. As an additional point, this study points out the necessity to describe statistical processes well enough for others to verify the adequacy.

From 2003, the International Student Center has been developing new General Education Japanese classes and Placement tests accompanying them, in an effort to develop the Japanese language curriculum for international students (Ogawa・Maruyama2006), (Ogawa・Maruyama・Okuno2004, 2006). This year marks the fifth year of this project. This report will examine the following: 1. Summary of Placement Test, results, analysis and revision. 2. This paper reports the possibility of the improvement of the face-sheet for the research about the effect the Japanese learner receives from the Japanese texts by Maruyama (2007b) and Maruyama and Ozawa (2007). It reports the reconsideration of Maruyama (2007b) from the viewpoint of the experiences of the Japanese learners, and suggests the possibility of the use of the various theories (e.g. Network theory (L.Mirloy, 1980)) for the improvement of the face-sheet for Maruyama (2007b).

The Japanese-language 6 education program at International Christian University in Tokyo includes a first-year special course mainly for native speakers who have been educated overseas or in international schools and lack proficiency at reading and writing. It is divided into three levels. The intermediate level focuses on (1) mastering commonly used kanji, (2) reading news stories, entry-level academic texts, and novels and writing reports on them, and (3) composing a substantial essay. In the light of the first-year objective of fostering logical thinking and ability to express oneself, along with the overall goal of promoting international understanding, the course needs to be improved so as to further enhance students' communication proficiency.

Since the 2003 academic year, the Japanese language division of this Center has conducted Japanese Placement Test for the foreign students entering with different selection methods. We also have conducted guidance for the study of Japanese language and observed the students' progress after enrollment. Ogawa・Maruyama・Okuno (2004) reported the actual condition of Japanese proficiency, and discussed the ideal form of Liberal Arts Japanese language courses that fit the realities of undergraduate students' language abilities. This paper reports the trials which has been conducted after Ogawa・Maruyama・Okuno (2004) and proposes some measures to clarify the problems in their early phases in order to maintain the quality of undergraduate education. It begins with a report of a trial of the Japanese Placement Test in the 2005 academic year, and the report of the Japanese Intermediate classes of General Education. After the discussion of the regulations of the curriculum for intermediate learners, it proposes some points for the future plan of Japanese language education of the General Education in the 2006 academic year.

From March 29 to April 5, 2004, members of the International Student Center visited CSU Sacramento, San Diego State University, and Stanford University with the funding of the Ministry of Education and Science. The visit allowed us to gain insights on how these universities offered support to international students on both academic and non-academic matters. Especially of note were the ways in which they offered programs to develop international students' "Academic English, " and how they took advantage of community resources such as volunteer organizations. We were also able to exchange information with our two partner universities in California (CSUS and SDSU) so that our exchange partnership will operate smoothly into the future.

During the 2003 academic year, the Japanese language division of this Center conducted a number of trials in an effort to reconsider the ideal form of Liberal Arts Japanese language courses that fit the realities of undergraduate students' language abilities. First, we conducted a Japanese language ability evaluation test at the time of enrollment. For those judged to be intermediate level, we conducted an oral interview to measure their oral communication ability. We also conducted guidance for the study of Japanese language and observed the students', progress after enrollment. As a result, we found that there were students whose Japanese language ability was insufficient to enroll in undergraduate courses and that there were instances where students did not have the needed time for Japanese language learning. This paper reports these trials and the problems that became apparent from them. It also proposes some measure's to catch the problems in their early phases in order to maintain the quality of undergraduate education.

Recently, academic writing classes focusing on the writing of reports and papers have become more important. A survey of the faculty at the International Christian University in 1995 reports the following opinions (Ozawa 1996a) : a) To be able to write reports and papers in Japanese is important with respect to academic assessment ; b) Most of the faculty members think that "the organization of writing," "the way references are used," "content," "form," and "comprehensibility" are important as criteria for assessment. Sato and Nishina (1994) also report that international students should be able to write academic papers in their student life. This paper analyzes the writing assignments of international students, and discusses the problems international students face when writing Japanese from the viewpoints of grammar, writing style, rhetorical elements, and organization. It points out that although students are able to write sentences by using appropriate sentence patterns to describe and analyze such items as graphs and charts, they have difficulties in organizing their writing. It concludes that international students strongly need to learn how to organize their writing.

This paper reports the results of a quantitative investigation of approximately 300 residents in the Toke area in Chiba prefecture, where the following changes have been observed: 1. A change from a rural community to a dormitory town since 1970; 2. A radical increase of the number of newcomers; the number of local residents was about 7,250 in 1965, which increased by more than 27,800 new residents between 1965 and 1995. 3. A subsequent language shift. The aim here is to describe and analyze the relationship between the residents' contact and use of dialects and their various characteristics such as age, gender, image, and language norm. The results indicate that the correlation between the residents' contact and the use of dialects and their sense of value of the Toke area is stronger than any other correlation such as that between the actual contact and the use of dialects and its correlation to their image of dialects.

This is a brief report on the vocabulary of Japanese for College Students: Basic. Before its publication by Kodansha International Co. Ltd, two reports on the vocabulary used in this textbook were done by the ICU JLP staff who were in charge of vocabulary. Those reports present the details of the vocabulary occurring in earlier versions, such as the method of vocabulary selection, and offer a tentative vocabulary list. At first, this report reviews the earlier general decisions made about the vocabulary of this textbook as detailed in the reports. Then, it compares the vocabulary of the previous edition as noted in the two reports and that of the final published edition, showing the differences between the two. Finally, this report makes some specific remarks on the vocabulary of this textbook for the teachers who may use Japanese for College Students: Basic in their classes.
