      In this research, we will adopt the historically correct constructional point of view and demonstrate that many of the buildings in Ostia are based upon direct application of the most advanced buildings in Rome, such as Pantheon. We provide the new evidence that can either fill gaps in our understanding or simply add to how the Roman constructed the cross-vaults. Statistically based method could be required for further analysis of their construction, such as wall thickness and mosaic. Preliminary analysis was made of limited walls in Ostia using point cloud data, especially X-ray fluorescence analysis is quite useful for the detection of restoration work. Conclusively it can be said that the research of ancient Roman architecture "without excavation" provide adequate and fruitful results.

      This project was aimed at confronting: the analysis of Roman cities and buildings without prior suppositions applying laser scanning technology as below.
      1) Reconsruction of upper strcutures and floors: The walls of the House of Painted Vaults at Ostia that partition the ground and first floors are not aligned with each other. This fact is in itself enough to doubt the uniformity of the whole structure. 2) Spatial structures adound the floor mosaics: The mosaics of the Insula of Muse could have spatial relationships with the walls of the rooms they belonged. Their layout could link and visualize areas connected in function. 3) Traffic system of Roman cities; regulartion ond safety of urban life: In Pompeii, a two-way traffic was impossible except for limited arteries. The ruts remaining on the streets, which can provide the direction of the vehicles, reveal that carts were driven on the centre of the streets in both directions.

      The research focused on the religious art in late antiquity in the city of Ostia Antica, based on analysis of related archaeological evidences and investigation of the visual materials of Judaism, Mithraism, Christianity and other gods. A special attention was paid to the question how the visual images reflect the profound transformation of new religious life in the city of Roman Empire. As a result of this analysis it has become clear that the image of god, the role of interior decoration, and all moved between the end of second century and the end of third in same direction, toward the “symbolic” mode, from civic religion to community religion.

      We investigated the ruins of Ostia Antica, one of the most important Roman cities, from the viewpoints of architecture, economy, society, arts, religions, dwellings and so on, thus clarified the urban structure and activities of the people. And we attested a phase of formation of a city in the middle ages reusing the ancient ruins in Borgo di Ostia. At the same time we carried out 3D laser scanning in the ruins of almost whole area of the city, and provided basic data for the study of Roman cities.
