      This study attempts to clarify practical thinking of Japanese language teachers by a qualitative analysis of the protocols and reports of 10 novice teachers (NTs) and 10 veteran teachers (VTs) . Teachers were asked to tell, while watching a video of Japanese class, what they thought (protocols) and to write what they thought right after that (reports). This paper analyzes flow of the thought and correspondences between protocols and reports. Treating the two as reciprocal, it clarifies what neither protocol nor report alone could do: VTs organize, in their reports, findings and ideas that appeared fragmentary when they observed, into holistic thoughts about the class in consideration of the purpose and the flow of the class; NTs do not always refer to important elements of the class they observed in their reports; NTs sometimes reserve judgment about teaching styles that are different from theirs.

      This paper is a course report on "Advanced Japanese 2: Writing and Presentation" in 2003 spring term at International Christian University. As a course head, author adapted two things to the course design. This paper aims to describe those two points and their influences on the learners. First, author emphasized to raise learners' meta-cognition of the as well as to train language skills and proficiency. In this paper, author introduces how "writing e-mails" class was conducted and shows what meta-cognition of this matter the learners acquired by the end of the course based on their answers in final exam. Secondly, author tried encouraging learners' spontaneous participation toward the "research and presentation project", and it was very successful. This paper briefly reviews the process of the project and introduces the comments from the learners on this project. Finally, the author suggests contribution of paying attention to learns' meta-cognition when considering teacher role and assessment from the perspective of new learning theory such as "situated learning theory". In addition, this paper refers to possible problem that teachers would face concerning learner motivation and time limitation when conducting this course.

      This paper reports the results of a quantitative investigation of approximately 300 residents in the Toke area in Chiba prefecture, where the following changes have been observed: 1. A change from a rural community to a dormitory town since 1970; 2. A radical increase of the number of newcomers; the number of local residents was about 7,250 in 1965, which increased by more than 27,800 new residents between 1965 and 1995. 3. A subsequent language shift. The aim here is to describe and analyze the relationship between the residents' contact and use of dialects and their various characteristics such as age, gender, image, and language norm. The results indicate that the correlation between the residents' contact and the use of dialects and their sense of value of the Toke area is stronger than any other correlation such as that between the actual contact and the use of dialects and its correlation to their image of dialects.

      This paper begins by introducing the trend of discussion in general education. Most of the educational reforms in the 20th century were based on behaviorism, influenced by modern industrialism. Experts in education recently warn that although those educational reforms brought significant progress, clinging to them has caused serious problems especially for children's learning. The modern educational system worked very well in creating huge numbers of workers with a sufficient amount of knowledge upon the urgent request of the market in the past, however, it failed to create workers who can make appropriate decisions by linking their knowledge and information all together in complicated situations as required by the recent post-modern market. This mismatch of teaching and learning made people reluctant of learning, which is one of the current issues of education in Japan today. Next, this paper demonstrates that Japanese language education has a history quite similar to that of education in general. During the past 20 years, learners of Japanese have increased in numbers as well as diversity. Concomitant with this, their learning environment has established rapidly. Teaching and learning Japanese language is nowadays quite sophisticated and has become a well known academic field. Not only business needs, but even just the slightest stimulus can leads people to learn Japanese these days. In this respect, it can be said that Japanese language education has now completed its modern stage and arrived at the post-modern stage. However, the teaching style and philosophy remain the same as in the modern stage. Therefore, this paper discusses the necessity for a new paradigm for Japanese language education, and suggests that "cultural learning", according to Saeki (1995), can be the new paradigm to motivate people to genuine learning. Finally, this paper points out that Japanese language teachers should reconsider the methods of teacher training, student assessment, and curriculum development, in order to orient themselves and students toward the new teaching and learning paradigm.

      This is a brief report on the vocabulary of Japanese for College Students: Basic. Before its publication by Kodansha International Co. Ltd, two reports on the vocabulary used in this textbook were done by the ICU JLP staff who were in charge of vocabulary. Those reports present the details of the vocabulary occurring in earlier versions, such as the method of vocabulary selection, and offer a tentative vocabulary list. At first, this report reviews the earlier general decisions made about the vocabulary of this textbook as detailed in the reports. Then, it compares the vocabulary of the previous edition as noted in the two reports and that of the final published edition, showing the differences between the two. Finally, this report makes some specific remarks on the vocabulary of this textbook for the teachers who may use Japanese for College Students: Basic in their classes.

      This paper aims to analyze narratives of Japanese novels from the relation between the narrater and the things narrated: to whom, when, where and how the narrater (not the writer of the text, but the one who is supposed to narrate the events in the text) narrates. In order to do this, this paper at first explains two fundamental notions of narrative types, which are "recit" and "discours", presented by the linguist, Emile Benveniste. Secondly, it introduces the discussions of Toru Araki and Chiyuki Kumakura, which point out the strong tendency to "discours" of Japanese narratives in comparison with the French and English ones. From these discussions, one may conclude that the types of narrations of Japanese novels are much more limited than those of the west. Therefore, finally, this paper analyzes very closely two Japanese modern novels, Kaze-no uta o kike (Hear the Wind Sing written by Haruki Murakami) and Kagiri-naku tomei-ni chikai buruu (Almost Transparent Blue written by Ryu Murakami), to see if the above supposition is correct or not. In conclusion, this paper shows that Japanese narratives, although their tendency to "discours" is rather strong, have different variation of narrations which cannot be seen in western counterparts.

      本研究は現在も日本とつながって生きる、日本語学習経験を持つ元留学生を対象に、PAC分析法とTEAを活用し、日本語学習や日本への留学を通じた日本留学体験・日本語学習の位置づけの変容とその要因について、文化心理学の知見を取り入れて分析を行い、類型化を図ることを目的としている。
      2021年度の研究活動は主に2点に整理できる。1点目は、DEの基盤となる文化心理学に関する理論的側面の研究を進めるとともに、多声モデル生成法に基づいてTEAにおけるモデル化に取り組んだことである。代表者らの一連の研究は元留学生である協力者の人生の径路や等至点(Equifinality Point: EFP)や分岐点(Bifurcation Point: BFP)などを明らかにしたが、新たな研究課題が出ていた。一つはBFPに関する分析で、どのような葛藤の中でいかなるメカニズムから径路がEFPに向けて収斂していくかをより微細に解明する必要があるということである。
      もう一つは各考察が、日高(2021)が指摘する「ビックワード(非常に抽象的で、なんでも含めてしまう言葉)におさまりがちで、社会実装としての機能を高める展開が求められるということである。後者は質的研究において「いかにモデル化するか」という課題であるとも言える。この点を検討する上で、やまだ(2020)の多声モデル生成法は示唆に富んでいる。2021年度は、上述の課題2点を問いとしてValsiner(2016)のTriple Gegenstand理論を参照しながら分岐点における葛藤のメカニズムを分析し、多声モデル生成法に基づいてTEAにおけるモデル化に取り組んだ。もう1点は、コロナ禍の影響を受けて2020年度に進めることができなかった調査協力者の選定およびインタビューを進めた。
