人が訪れる空間の成立・変遷に関することを中心に研究を行っている。具体的には、観光地化の過程と地域社会への影響、観光資源の管理および活用方法、空間の変化と観光行動の関連、それらの背後にある制度や思想などについて、様々な単位の空間を対象とし研究を進めている。人々がわざわざ訪れるような空間、あるいは訪れるという行動そのものにも、暮らしを豊かにしていく様々なヒントが込められており、こうした研究を通じて、真に豊かな地域、都市、国土の構築の一助となることが最終的な目標である。
