中国への返還後の香港の「一国二制度」方式の実施状況を、自治・民主化・市民社会・経済融合・民族アイデンティティなどの問題を中心に研究してきた。現在はこの研究を継続すると同時に、そこから派生して、①香港の自由な市民社会からの影響を受ける中国大陸の社会・政治の変容、②現在の東アジア国際関係に対する冷戦の影響、③東アジアにおける越境現象の展開とその東アジア地域主義に対する影響、④中国の政治・経済的台頭に対する東アジアの反応などの問題に対して関心をもち、共同研究等に従事している。
