The purpose of this study was to explore whether sport organizations in Germany can be regarded as public-sector concerns that ensure their public nature through affirmation of self-interest, and to clarify the practices of these organizations. Kato (2001) has explained the process of how publicness can be created via self-interest based on the logic that external relationships are built by thoroughly implementing internal values. This explanation is consistent with the concept of publicness suggested by Saito (2000), which considers the fact that mutual recognition of self-interest assures plurality of values. Finally, we explain how Saito's concept of publicness itself not only assures self-interest, but can also be regarded as a concept of publicness that is assured by self-interest. Next, we critically examine the views of Aruga (2006, 2011a, 2011b, 2013) regarding publicness based on self-interest. The results indicate that sport organizations in Germany can be regarded as public-sector associations that assure their public nature based on affirmation of self-interest. Finally, through interviews and their interpretation, it has become apparent that the practices of sport organizations in Germany include the practice of integration assuring plurality of values, the practice of building external relationships through implementation of internal values, and active practices toward authorities, such as the federal government or provincial governments. Overall, we can say that these practices can assure publicness based on self-interest.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the contents of the qualities and abilities required of certified recreation instructors, and to examine the relationship between the characteristics of certified instructors' experiences and the required qualities and abilities by conducting a questionnaire survey of certified instructors of the National Recreation Association of Japan.
First, we named the following three factors from 40 items on qualities and abilities required of recreation instructors: “self-realization through recreation and understanding of others”, “ability to plan and execute recreational programs”, and “respect for the recipients and contribution to society”. Second, we examined the relationship between the subscale scores (mean values) that constitute the three factors, and quantitative characteristics, such as the teaching history of certified instructors or instruction frequency, as well as formal characteristics, such as the organization of the first certification or the use of the certification itself.
The results showed that the three factors concerning the qualities and abilities of recreation instructors tended to be evaluated regardless of the quantitative or formal aspects of the instruction. Further, all factors tended to be evaluated higher in the groups with longer instruction experience and higher instruction frequency, whereas two factors showed a high evaluation in the groups with the use of certification in volunteer activities or occupation.

The current study aimed to clarify essential qualities, abilities, and skills for recreation professionals in the United States, based on accreditation standards for degree programs at universities and requirements for professional certifications. Researchers reviewed documents on accreditation and certification standards that were published by academic accreditation organizations including COAPRT, which is under National Parks and Recreation Associations (NRPA), and CARTE, which is under American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA), as well as certifying bodies of professional certifications including CPRP and CTRS. Researchers also conducted a case study of an accredited program at Northwest Missouri State University. Supplementally, brief interviews were conducted with the chairman of an accreditation body and a university professor at an accredited program. It is found that COAPRT provided learning outcomes that outline the general competences of the recreation program graduates, while CARTE provided detailed educational contents. Many competence contents of CPRP were on administration and management, while CTRS focused more on skills and techniques to provide effective programs. The characteristics and tendencies of accreditation and qualification standards were summarized, and issues in Japanese recreational professional certifications were discussed.

    • Career development in sport, education and occupation of Japanese elite athletes. The compatibility of education and occupation with elite sports and the transition into the second career in Japan.

          27 1 2014

      More details

      Language:German   Publishing type:Doctoral thesis

This study deals with the career development of Japanese athletes, especially focusing on how athletes in Japan are able to combine their engagement in competitive sports with education, vocational training or even profession to manage the transition from first career in competitive sports to second career in professional life after retiring as an athlete. Sports in Japan are not based on a network of regional sports clubs as in most European countries but to a large extent on school, university and corporate sports and this structural organisation allows to assume that there is a good concept for the combination of education and profession with competitive sports. Therefore, the aim of this study was to introduce career patterns of Japanese athletes in different disciplines and to clarify mechanisms and environmental conditions of the Japanese system in which the athletes try to arrange their sporting as well as their educational and professional careers.
This research was conducted within the theoretical framework of system theory to analyze the inclusion of athletes in the sporting, educational and professional subsystems of the Japanese society. With that theoretical concept, the author aimed to describe the interfaces of the sport, the education and the professional system of Japan in the career development of athletes and to find out how they manage to arrange their different roles in these subsystems.
For this study, 27 Japanese athletes (14 women, 13men) of 12 disciplines (6 individual sports, 6 team sports) were interviewed on their career process with the method of partly standardized, problem-centered interviews especially focusing on the combination of sporting, educational and professional needs throughout the active career and the transition to second career as a working person after retiring from sports. The content of the interviews was then described using categories derived from the theoretical framework to analyze particular needs of the athletes in each stage of their career and environmental characteristics, namely what is necessary for sports career development and for transition to life after retirement in sports in Japan.
As a result, several career patterns and types of Japanese athletes of individual and team sports could be introduced showing points of common, similarities and differences among these disciplines. Moreover, several characteristics and distinctive features of Japanese athletes’ careers, like entering and graduating from school or university with excellent sporting results instead of school performance, or personal relations as a means to move on to the next stage in the career path, became clear. These characteristics do not just originate in the special organization of the sports system in Japan though, but they also depend on the particular Japanese structure of the educational and professional system.

      Abstract

While the organisation of sports in different countries is structured primarily on regional sports clubs, sports in Japan are based to a large extent on corporate sports. In corporate sports, Japanese companies are the owners of sports teams and their members must be employees of the company, meaning that the athletes work in addition to their sporting activities.

This article deals with the system of corporate sports, using the example of corporate judo teams. First, the author gives a detailed description of the corporate judo teams to show how the system works. The question is then posed why the corporate sports system still exists in judo while a large number of teams in many other sports have broken up since the 1990s, and the breakdown of the corporate sports system will be analysed.

Reasons for the preservation of the corporate sports system in judo were found in business relations, in the marketing of sports, in the organisation of sports in Japan and in the special importance of judo in that country. However, although the corporate sports system has been maintained in Japanese judo up to the present day, a trend towards a modern form of corporate sports can be seen.

    • Japanese corporate sports. Characteristics of the Japanese sport promotion system using the example of Judo.

      More details

      Language:German   Publishing type:Master’s thesis

While the organization of sports in different countries all over the world is set up primarily on a network of regional sports clubs, sports in Japan is based on corporate sports to a large extent. The promotion of sports by Japanese companies includes supporting of competitive sports, mass sports or sporting practice in favour of one’s health as well as team sports or individual sports. Companies of various industries therefore found a sports team that consists just of employees of the company itself and become the owner of it. The nature of the interaction of work and sports is different depending on the company and moreover it also depends on whether the company is promoting competitive sports or any kind of mass sports with the aim of just having fun or maintaining health.
This work deals with the system of Japanese corporate sports by the means of judo teams of different companies and is based on two major issues. On the one hand the author is asking for the characteristics and particularities of the corporate sports system and therefore a detailed description of corporate sports teams in judo is given as an example for the whole system. This part of the work relies mostly on a survey conducted by the author where athletes, coaches and managers of corporate judo teams were asked about the system they are in. On the other hand the question why still a lot of corporate teams in Japanese judo exists, while a large number of teams in many other sports broke up since the 1990s, is posed. The elements contributing to the preservation of corporate sports in judo were investigated by mainly using a variety of scientific approaches of sports.
Reasons for the preservation of the corporate sports system in japanese judo were found in business relations, in the marketing of sports and in the japanese sports organization itself as well as in some special features of judo in Japan that were relevant for corporate sports’ survival. Nevertheless, although corporate sports was maintained in japanese judo even today, it turned out that even in judo a trend towards a modern corporate sport system can be seen.
