    Profile

Two of the Rhodian amphora handles uncovered by the Japanese Expedition at Tel Zeror in 1964-1966 are now located in the Tenri University Sankokan Museum, Tenri, Japan. They were both excavated on the northern mound of Tel Zeror, which was inhabited during the Hellenistic and Roman Periods. They can be dated to the early and mid- second century BCE on the basis of the readings of the eponym/fabricant names on the stamps. The dates are paralleled with one of the three chronologically successive buildings uncovered on the northern mound. The date of the amphorae and the location of the site support the view that Tel Zeror functioned as one of the main stations between the Mediterranean and Samaria in the mid-second century BCE.

It has been generally assumed that the numbers of the Israelite army in II Reg 13,7 are based on a certain archival source that the Deuteronomist employed for his composition. Scholars, supposing that these numbers are credible, have compared them with the numbers of Ahab's army recorded in Shalmaneser III's inscription. However, such a comparison is invalid because the numbers of Ahab's army was probably exaggerated. The numbers in II Reg 13,7 are quite low, when compared with other numbers of the Israelite army in the Deuteronomistic History, where the context stresses the peak of Israel's power. The Deuteronomistic History likewise increases the numbers of enemy armies in order to accentuate their power. These observations indicate that the Deuteronomist intentionally created small numbers in II Reg 13,7 compared to the size of the Israelite army in other parts of the Deuteronomistic History, in order to create the prominent contrast between the lowest ebb and the peak of Israel. II Reg 13,7 is not derived from any archival sources, but reflects the Deuteronomist's intention to demonstrate the lowest point in the History by manipulating the numbers.

Despite considerable scholarly efforts for many years, the last two decades of the Kingdom of Israel are still beneath the veil of history. What was the status of the Kingdom after its annexation by Assyria in 732 BCE? Who conquered Samaria, the capital of the Kingdom? When did it happen? One of the primary reasons for this situation lies in the discrepancies found in the historical sources, namely the Hebrew Bible and the Assyrian texts. Since biblical studies and Assyriology are two distinct disciplines, the gaps in the sources are not easy to bridge. Moreover, recent great progress in the archaeological research in the Southern Levant provides now crucial new data, independent of these textual sources. This volume, a collection of papers by leading scholars from different fields of research, aims to bring together, for the first time, all the available data and to discuss these conundrums from various perspectives in order to reach a better and deeper understanding of this crucial period, which possibly triggered in the following decades the birth of "new Israel" in the Southern Kingdom of Judah, and eventually led to the formation of the Hebrew Bible and its underlying theology.

Through this research, we have shared the common problem of 'biases' in researching classical 'sacred books/scriptures' and have elucidated how they have prevented from objective research of such literary works.
Further, we have reported new literary methods and theories to break away from such biases, through discussions of the effectiveness and limits of which each research member could broaden one's own horizon and develop their research considerably.

A meeting room excavated at Tel-Rekhesh of the Galilee in Israel proved to be a synagogue that was probably erected in the middle of the first century C.E., about the same period of the activity of Jesus of Nazareth, and abandoned by the second half of the next century. Similar to those first century C.E. synagogues found so far in Israel, it was a simple room with cut stone seats along the walls. The identification of such a simple room with a synagogue was attested by the fact that most Jews in Judea became so conscious of observing the Jewish divine Law at that time and this narrow site of Galilee was populated by those Jews. We concluded that the construction of a synagogue was part of ‘Judaisation’ of the Galilee in the sense that Galilean Jewish people began to organize daily life according to the divine precepts: they were very sensitive in abstaining ritual impurity and made use of stone vessels and rids of utensils which would reflect the Mishnaic concepts of ritual purity.

In this study, we tried to reconstruct the regional history of the eastern coastal area of Mediterranean Sea, from Late Bronze Age(14-11 BCE) to Late Iron Period(7-6BCE),through corporation of 'Regional Archaeology' and 'Biblical Archaeology'. For this purpose, we conducted archaeological excavations on Tel Rekhesh, which is located on Lower Galilee, Israel. As a results, it was revealed that the large building complex on the upper mound would be reconstructed as an approximately 60 × 80 m rectangular. Ground Penetrating survey on the Lower shelf suggested the existence of some kinds of monumental structure there.

(2) By examining the Neo-Assyrian royal inscriptions, the probability was pointed out that the real conqueror of Samaria was Shalmaneser V. (3) By examining various sites in the Northern Kingdom of Israel, it was pointed out that the Assyrian conquest of the Northern Kingdom was not merely a military conquest.

Our engagement in a historical inquiry into ancient Judaism allows us to better understand the historical dynamics of all major monotheisms including Christianity and Islam, especially with particular attention to their basic, structural differences. Historically the study of religion, whose theoretical model is mainly based on Western Christianity, has paid its significant attention to faith as an only essential component that could define every religious phenomenon. However, this perspective is one-sided in examining the history of monotheism. Rabbinic Judaism and Islam, characterized primarily by halakha and Sharia respectively, are understood as religions founded on divine law, whose inquiry must not only make this fact known but also be unique enough to demonstrate that the very origin of these two types of monotheism is in fact traced back to ancient Jewish society and its legal tradition, which helps set forth a path to dynamically understanding the entire history of monotheism.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the funerary system in the ancient Israel and the idea of the Other World. The Israelites settled down in the central hill region of Palestine in the Early Iron Age and used to bury the dead in the rock cave family grave in underground, while the Philistines and others who lived on the sea shore plain buried each one of their family members individually in a simple grave such as a cist grave or in a jar coffin. Such kind of the burial system in ancient Israel explains why the Hebrew bible usually uses the expression “be gathered to his people” in its burial stories. The archaeological findings, on the other hand, make it clear that the ancient Israelite people believed in the life after death, although the Hebrew bible keeps quiet about the world after death.

The aim of our project is to study the genealogy of politics and religion in West Asia (the so-called Near/Middle East). The project covers antiquity to the modern era at a macro-historical level. Taken into consideration are not only Islamic society and Pre-Islamic antiquity, but also Jewish and Christian societies, which have symbiotically cohabitated with Islamic society under the rule of various Islamic polities from the medieval to the modern period in West Asia, and the discourse of the modern Western Orientalists, which shaped the conventional historiography of West Asia, including the issue of politics and religion. Using interdisciplinary joint research, the project provides a new description of this problem. The main result of our project is published as a monograph.

The Last Days of the Northern Kingdom of Israel (the late eighth century BCE) have not been adequately investigated due to the complexity of the synthesis of all the relevant data from different disciplines such as biblical studies, Assyriology and archaeology. This study first constructed an international research network on the subject and held an international conference on the subject inviting established scholars from the world.
The results of the conference as well as the method of this study were highly appreciated, which led to the publication of the monograph based on the conference by De Gruyter in 2018 (forthcoming).
