<p>This article aims at describing the ontological realities of the Penan society of Borneo, based on the recent anthropological attempt to transcend the Western dichotomy between nature and culture. Philippe Descola argues that anthropology has restricted the conceptualization of beings to the Western category of nature, ignoring native classificatory criteria. In his continuous effort to overcome the nature/culture dichotomy, he found-borrowing the intuition from Husserl's idea-the twin elements of "physicality" and "interiority" as innate and specific to the human species. By employing the awareness of that duality, Descola tried to explore how the subject (humans) would attribute or deny those attributes to other existing beings (non-humans). It is possible to think, however, that just the elements of physicality and interiority may not be enough for certain societies, because other elements are possibly present there. Drawing on the Penan conceptualization of human beings (kelunan) composed of the body (use/ batung/ tuboh), soul (barewun) and name (ngaran) , as demonstrated in Needham's article in 1971, this paper tries to ethnographically describe and examine how the subject will attribute or deny those particular elements to other existing beings. The Penan are some 15,000 former hunters-and-gatherers, living in the tropical rainforest, away from major rivers inhabited by cultivators in Borneo Island. The Penan population in the Malaysian state of Sarawak is reported some 7,000 and is divided into two distinct populations: the Eastern and Western Penan. The primary focus of this paper is some 500 Western Penan living along the upper reaches of the Belaga River. The first part of the paper treats the "fabrication" of human beings. When a baby is newly born in Penan society, its parents are given so-called teknonyms (i.e., "so-and-so's father" or "so-and-so's mother"), referring to their relation with their child. Infant human beings have a body and soul, but are not yet given a name. Infants only become "human" once they start to be called by their name. On the other hand, when humans die in Penan society, they lose their name, not just their body. The deceased are no longer called by their own names, but by the name of the tree used for coffin during the death ritual. In addition, the deceased's relatives are given death names (ngaran lumu). What is important to Penan life is that death names are employed in a wider range of contexts than that of bereavement. They are used mainly to express affection. Thus, humans in Penan society are occasionally called by autonyms, teknonyms and death names while they are alive. It can be seen that human beings are beings that have a complete set of body, soul and an (individual) name. The second part depicts and examines spiritual beings in Penan society. The ungap are superhuman beings transformed from dead person's souls, and are believed to cause misfortune to living humans. It is understood that ungap are indistinguishable beings, without bodies or names. On the other hand, baley is a general term for spirits or God. If someone has baley kawik, he or she is always good at hunting, while if someone has baley iket, he or she is made to cough continuously. There are several baleys in the sky, which cause meteorological disasters if they become enraged by the human mistreatment of animals. Those spiritual beings can be described as not having bodies but souls, while some have names and others do not. The third part describes and treats animals. The Penan say that all animals have souls. Animals have names of the species, in addition to their bodies and souls. After wild animals are hunted and killed, the names of the animals must be changed to another set of names (ngaran dua), so as not to cause such meteorological disasters as thunder,</p><p>(View PDF for the rest of the abstract.)</p>

This paper describes and examines the penis pin (uteng nyi) among the Penan. The Penan are the nomadic and formerly nomadic groups of hunter-gatherers of Borneo's tropical rain forest in Southeast Asia. Part of the problem concerning the study of the penis pin among the indigenous societies in Malaysian Sarawak is that we still do not know what the penis pin is all about. Western pornographic fantasy that primitive Bornean women crave an augmented penis for sexual pleasure has principally retarded the field research on the topic. In light of the shortage of the field research, this paper primarily focuses on the ethnographic description of sexual behaviors of the Penan as the background data of the sexual device. This paper is based on the anthropological field research conducted between April 2006 and March 2007. This paper concludes that the penis pin is a democratic device that enhances sexual pleasure for both men and women. They share democratic pleasure, based on the relatively free sexual relations.

This paper examines the relationship between sorcery and envy, focusing on the Kalis of Borneo. According to Kazuyoshi SUGAWARA, envy is permitted within the action space of baboons and chimpanzees, as well as human beings. SUGAWARA argues that envy appears automatically without body expression (including speech action) away from the action space, if sorcery as a cultural device exists in human society. Based on this theoretical orientation, this paper focuses on situations in which envy automatically appears in Kalis society : a village gathering to seek out sorcerers and a ritual setting for treating a sick person suffering from poisoning (a kind of sorcery). Kalis people, however, feel envy is omnipresent in their society. The Kalis attempt to extract part of envy, by explaining misfortune with sorcery or dealing with misfortune in a ritual setting. They believe envy never transforms itself into goodwill or friendliness. Envy, therefore, should be broken into pieces so as not to generate another victim of sorcery. Such practices perpetuate sorcery as a cultural device. ln this sense, sorcery and envy reflexively intensify each other. As shown in this paper, the evolutional theory of emotion will help develop anthropological study on magic, sorcery and misfortune.

本研究「ものの人類学的研究―技芸複合の視点から（An Anthropological Study on Things-A Perspective from technology-arts complex）」はアジアとアフリカにおける人間と非人間の「もの」（広義の物質文化）の関係の諸相を、その関係における広義の技術・芸術的実践（「技芸」）に焦点を当てる視点から、文化人類学を中心としつつ他分野の研究者の参加・協力を通じて学際的に検討することを主な目的としている。2020年度も本目的に沿った研究を実施した。同年度は新型コロナ・パンデミックの影響により、当初に計画していた海外での現地調査・フィールドワークの実施が不可能になったことから、分担者と協力者の各メンバーは文献やオンラインなどの代替的な手法を含む調査研究を実施した。さらに年度後半には、オンライン形式による研究会を開催し、そこで研究分担者の奥野による研究報告と質疑応答に続いてメンバーの研究成果の進捗報告を実施して、メンバー間での情報共有を行い、コロナ状況に対応する形での調査研究を推進した。より具体的な内容としては、近代西欧的な技術観に還元できない技術や技能実践の在り方を研究する際の方策であるとか、これまでの先行研究における「近代的／伝統的（在地的）」技術、「技術／芸術」といった通念的な二分法自体を相対化していくといった問題意識などをめぐりメンバー間での知見の共有と交換を実施した。

This study project reconsidered humans as a species among diverse species within the framework of multispecies studies, which focuses on the entanglement of multiple species. This study focused into the anthropological image on dynamic changes of modern health care systems under the multi-dimensional situations of human value evoked political and economical globalization. The chief aim of this study is to describe the dynamic and creative cultural process in which people appropriate the exogenous medical system to indigenous health care system, ethnomedicine, through "pluralistic medicalization."
We examined the Michael Foucault's concept of "govermentality" of the modern state which controls both individual body of subject by "health care" in a broad sense, he termed "anatomo-politique," and collective body of human population through statistics or public health policy, then he termed "bio-politique." We concluded that the Foucault's model could be applied in not only western Europe society but also other non-western developing countries.
We used many historical and ethnographical documents on socio-cultural transformation of modern medicine. Under the strong pressure of economic globalization the individual body and the human's life have been drastically changed during the half-century. Especially the postcolonial developing countries introduced the modern western systems and received strong popular resistances. Then many allotypic forms of western medical system have emerged from the dynamic interaction between modern and indigenous medical systems. Health care system can be one of applicable examples for the socio-cultural cum historical analysis of the actuality of human value.

Katsumi Okuno conducted intensive library research on globalization of modern medicine in London, UK between March 12 and 27, 2005, which mainly focused on history of the practice of medicine and anthropology during colonial era of the British Malaya.
Mitsuho Ikeda organized a panel discussion in the Annual Conference of Japanese Society of Cultural Anthropology held in June 6, 2004 at Institute of Asian and African Studies, Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. The research assumes that anthropological study would reveal in concrete and detailed fashions the changing as well as constant aspects of perception of natural environment and landscapes among indigenous cultural communities in Sarawak. This would also contribute from the angle of humanities to the study of community development, which has been largely dominated by social sciences.
As mainly anthropological research, each Japanese member of the research team selected one or two local communities of indigenous population. The selection of fieldwork areas was made according to each member's past research experience and knowledge of local language(s). As each Japanese member is familiar to at least one locally spoken language, usual anthropological method of participatory observation and of collection of oral information was smoothly carried out. In terms of ethnic groupings under the research objectives, the selections were specifically the Iban by Uchibori, the Kayan by Tsugami, -the Kelabit by Msuda, the Penan by Okuno and the Malay/Chinese-Indigenous peoples' mixed area in the Kemana by Ishikawa. Also urban Iban communities were studied by Peter Kedit, the former Director of Sarawak Museum.
