    Abstract

    We analyze the supersymmetric defect indices of $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 super Yang Mills theories which are simultaneously decorated by the BPS line operators and the boundary conditions. We demonstrate that the two-point functions of the boundary ’t Hooft lines of magnetic charges associated with the minuscule representations in the presence of the regular Nahm pole boundary conditions can be obtained by applying the Higgsing prescription to the half-indices of the Dirichlet boundary conditions. Accordingly, we find precise matching of the indices for pairs of the S-dual configurations with the Wilson lines and Neumann boundary conditions and those with the ’t Hooft lines and the regular Nahm pole boundary conditions. Alternatively, we analytically compute the indices by means of the inner product of the Macdonald polynomials to find the exact closed-form expressions.

    Abstract

    We analyze the line defect correlation functions decorating the supersymmetric indices of $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 super Yang-Mills theories with orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups. We obtain exact closed-form expressions for the correlators by means of combinatorial methods associated with the group characters, including the generalized Murnaghan-Nakayama rules. The exact results for the large N correlators lead to the gravity indices for the gravity dual spectrum of the fluctuations of the fundamental string wrapping AdS 2 and those of the fat string, the D5-brane wrapping AdS 2 × ℝℙ4.

    Abstract

    We study the half-indices of $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 super Yang-Mills theories of orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups. We find precise matching pairs of the half-indices as strong evidence of dualities of the half-BPS boundary conditions and interfaces. The half-indices encode the spectra of excitations on the holographically dual orbifold ETW brane and giant gravitons. The exact form of the index for the orbifold ETW giant gravitons is obtained from the giant graviton expansion of the half-index.

    Abstract

    We study the giant gravitons in the AdS 4 bagpipe geometries involving end-of-the-world (ETW) brane constructed by a single 5-brane and either two stacks or one stack of D3-branes in Type IIB string theory. From the exact formulae and giant graviton expansions of the half-indices for the half-BPS boundary conditions and interfaces in $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 super Yang-Mills theory, we obtain the BPS spectra of the fluctuation modes of the AdS 4 bagpipe geometries including the ETW brane region.

    Abstract

    We study the large N and large representation limits of the Schur line defect correlators of the Wilson line operators transforming in the (anti)symmetric, hook and rectangular representations for 𝒩 = 4 U(N) super Yang-Mills theory. By means of the factorization property, the large N correlators of the Wilson line operators in arbitrary representations can be exactly calculated in principle. In the large representation limit they turn out to be expressible in terms of certain infinite series such as Ramanujan’s general theta functions and the q-analogues of multiple zeta values (q-MZVs). Several generating functions for combinatorial objects, including partitions with non-negative cranks and conjugacy classes of general linear groups over finite fields, emerge from the large N correlators. Also we find conjectured properties of the automorphy and the hook-length expansion satisfied by the large N correlators.

    Abstract

    We study the Schur line defect correlation functions in $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 and $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2∗ U(N) super Yang-Mills (SYM) theory. We find exact closed-form formulae of the correlation functions of the Wilson line operators in the fundamental, antisymmetric and symmetric representations via the Fermi-gas method in the canonical and grand canonical ensembles. All the Schur line defect correlators are shown to be expressible in terms of multiple series that generalizes the Kronecker theta function. From the large N correlators we obtain generating functions for the spectra of the D5-brane giant and the D3-brane dual giant and find a correspondence between the fluctuation modes and the plane partition diamonds.

    Abstract

    We find closed-form expressions for the Schur indices of 4d $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2* super Yang-Mills theory with unitary gauge groups for arbitrary ranks via the Fermi-gas formulation. They can be written as a sum over the Young diagrams associated with spectral zeta functions of an ideal Fermi-gas system. These functions are expressed in terms of the twisted Weierstrass functions, generating functions for quasi-Jacobi forms. The indices lie in the polynomial ring generated by the Kronecker theta function and the Weierstrass functions which contains the polynomial ring of the quasi-Jacobi forms. The grand canonical ensemble allows for another simple exact form of the indices as infinite series. In addition, we find that the unflavored Schur indices and their limits can be expressed in terms of several generating functions for combinatorial objects, including sum of triangular numbers, generalized sums of divisors and overpartitions.

    Abstract

    Recently Dorigoni, Green and Wen conjectured a remarkable exact formula for an integrated correlator of four superconformal primary operators in $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. In this work, we investigate its large N limit in detail. We show that the formula of Dorigoni, Green and Wen can be recast into the sum over the contributions of (p, q)-strings via the holography in the large N limit. Due to the SL(2, ℤ) duality, all the contributions are governed by a single function, typically appearing as the fundamental string contribution. The large order behavior for the perturbative genus expansion of this function allows us to reveal the large N non-perturbative corrections. The same result is obtained more systematically by using a Laplace-difference equation for the integrated correlator.

    Abstract

    We present new analytic results on black hole perturbation theory. Our results are based on a novel relation to four-dimensional $${\mathcal {N } }=2$$ supersymmetric gauge theories. We propose an exact version of Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization conditions on quasinormal mode frequencies in terms of the Nekrasov partition function in a particular phase of the $$\Omega $$-background. Our quantization conditions also enable us to find exact expressions of eigenvalues of spin-weighted spheroidal harmonics. We test the validity of our conjecture by comparing against known numerical results for Kerr black holes as well as for Schwarzschild black holes. Some extensions are also discussed.

    This is an unconventional review article on spectral problems in black hole perturbation theory. Our purpose is to explain how to apply various known techniques in quantum mechanics to such spectral problems. The article includes analytical/numerical treatments, semiclassical perturbation theory, the (uniform) WKB method and useful mathematical tools: Borel summations, Padé approximants, and so forth. The article is not comprehensive, but rather looks into a few examples from various points of view. The techniques in this article are widely applicable to many other examples.

    本研究の目的は弦理論におけるカラビ・ヤウ多様体の幾何学と量子可積分系・2次元電子系におけるスペクトル理論を結びつけ、弦理論の非摂動的側面の理解を深めることである。本年度は当初の研究計画にはなかったが、ブラックホールの準固有振動モードに関する研究を主に行った。これは思いがけず本研究課題に非常に近いことが判明したためである。具体的には以下の2点に関する研究を行った。
    <BR>
    ブラックホールの摂動論を考えると、2階の線形微分方程式が得られる。この固有方程式に適切な境界条件を課すと、固有値として離散的な複素数のみ許される。このような複素固有値は準固有振動数と呼ばれ、連星ブラックホールの合体の最終段階で重要な役割を果たす。観測との比較のためにも準固有振動数の計算は重要な課題である。本年度の研究では量子力学の摂動論に基づき、準固有振動数を効率よく計算するためのアルゴリズムを提唱した。摂動論は適用範囲が広く、様々なシチュエーションに応用できるのが利点である。ここで提唱したアルゴリズムも幅広いブラックホール時空に対して適用可能なので今後様々な応用が期待できる。
    <BR>
    これと並行して弦理論におけるトーリック・カラビ・ヤウ多様体と2次元格子上のブロッホ電子模型の対応について考えた。今年度は蜂の巣格子模型に対応するカラビ・ヤウ多様体を探索し、紆余曲折を経て対応物を同定した。その結果、エネルギーバンド幅に対して、弱磁場極限下における解析的な結果を得ることに成功した。まもなく査読論文雑誌JHEPに掲載予定である。

    本年度は、ABJM理論と呼ばれる3次元Chern-Simons理論の分配関数を昨年に引き続き調べた。AdS/CFT対応によれば、ABJM理論はAdS時空上のM理論と等価な理論であると考えられるので、ABJM理論の理解はすなわちM理論の理解そのものと同じであると期待されている。
    ABJM理論の分配関数が受ける非摂動的補正について詳しく調べた。このような非摂動的補正は、世界面インスタントン、D2-インスタントンと呼ばれる2種類のインスタントンによって引き起こされる。昨年度の研究で、世界面インスタントンの補正の一般的な表式は、位相的弦理論の結果から得られることが分かっていた。またD2-インスタントンの低次の補正は、我々が昨年度発見した「極の相殺機構」により、決定できる。本年度はこれら2種類のインスタントンが束縛状態をなす場合の補正を、同様の「極の相殺機構」を用いて決定した。興味深いことに「極の相殺機構」といくつかのインプット・データを考慮してやると、インスタントン束縛状態の非摂動的補正の一般形を予想することが出来、結果は非常にシンプルな形式にまとまった。このことは、ABJM理論の背後に美しい数理的構造が潜んでいることを示唆しており、今後の研究課題である。
    またその後の研究により、D2-インスタントンの一般的補正は、リファインされた位相的弦理論により計算出来ることが分かった。また、分配関数だけでなく、1/2 BPS Wilsonループについても同様の解析が可能であることも分かった(両者ともプレプリントサーバー : arXivには既に投稿済、近日中に学術誌に出版予定である)。

    AdS/CFT対応はゲージ理論と超弦理論の双対性として、10年以上にわたって非常に熱心に研究されてきた。私はこれまでこのようなAdS/CFT対応の中でも最も基本的な例であるN=4超対称Yang-Mills理論と(5次元反ドジッター空間)×(5次元球面)上のIIB型超弦理論の間の双対性を中心に研究を行ってきた。
    本年度の研究では、近年発見された新たなAdS/CFT対応の例である3次元N=6超対称Chern-Simons理論と(4次元反ドジッター空間)×(複素3次元射影空間)上のIIA型超弦理論の間の双対性について調べた。この対応の興味深い点は両理論の高い対称性のために可積分性の構造が現れ、摂動論を越えた厳密な解析が可能になることである。我々は可積分系で知られている「ドレッシング法」と呼ばれる方法を用いて、IIA型超弦理論の2次元シグマ模型の運動方程式のマルチ・ソリトン解を構成した。このような解はジャイアント・マグノンと呼ばれており、AdS/CFT対応におけるスペクトラムの解析において非常に重要な役割を果たす。さらに構成したマルチ・ソリトン解を用いてジャイアント・マグノンの散乱行列を計算した。得られた結果は系の対称性から予想されたS行列の強結合極限の結果と完全に一致した。このことはAdS/CFT対応の非自明な検証の例になっており、S行列あるいはスペクトラムの理解において重要な意味を持つと確信している。
    またAdS/CFT対応とは別にごく最近発見された4次元N=2超対称ゲージ理論とLiouville理論とよばれる2次元理論の間の双対性についての研究も行った。
