      The result of this research is 23 facilities throughout Japan that have started as a long history of the care of the elderly, have collected materials. Those materials are the primary data for the care of the elderly and management to facilities. We analyzed some of the primary data. Some of these valuable primary materials have been handed over to us. We converted all materials into PDF and made it possible to browse on a personal computer. Through this study, we were able to clarify the situation of the welfare facilities for the aged from the whole of Japan from the Meiji era until around 1963 when the welfare law for the aged was enacted. In this material, it is possible to know the treatment of users of facilities for the elderly, the situation at the time the facility was opened, and the operational status after the facility was opened. It can be said that this research will greatly contribute to future history research of elderly welfare facilities.

      This research is about relief supplies sent to Japan by the American private organization Licensed Agencies for Relief in Asia (LARA) after World War II.
      During the postwar chaos, there was an enormous number of necessary support. The purpose of this research is to clarify the actual situation of cooperation between the public sector and the private sector on the problem. The name of LARA means Asia relief. The activities were Japan and Korea. LARA is an organization established by ACVAFS. ACVAFS organized CRALOG as an organization to rescue Germany before Japan. From these points of view, we tried to collect materials and information and examine them. There was public sector involvement in the process of relief. One of the requirements is that public and private collaboration is established for effective management of relief.

      The Yoro-in was the beginning of Japanese elderly person facilities. A purpose of this study is to clarify the situation of an elderly person living in facilities using the first document. I collected the first documents from eleven facilities established before Second World War. We analyzed the case records of the elderly person living in the Yoro-in who had difficulty of institutional care. We understood that the staffs try to find a new way out about the problems of the elderly person lived in the Yoro-in from the case records.

      When the World War II ended, there was widespread poverty and extreme hardship among the people in general. The LARA sent large quantities of relief supplies to Japan. Those who qualified for the relief supplies were categorized; according to the level of seriousness of their poverty.Ranked first on the list were those who lived in orphanages, then came those who lived in hospitals, and thirdly, patients in homes for people afflicted by TB, and lastly, those in nursing homes. LARA systematically organized the districts into 4 categories; ranked 'A' would be the ones viewed most seriously damaged, followed by districts which suffered less.
      I have collected the data about LARA and relief supplies in the districts of 'A'.Most of the institutions have not kept the relevant documents. Nevertheless, there was an institution which has kept those documents.Through my research, I have realized the prominent role played by LARA in the history of social welfare.
