This study developed a Japanese version of the Revised Version of the Compound Psychological Capital Scale (CPC-12R) and tested its reliability and construct validity. The participants were 1,000 young adults (500 university students and 500 employees) recruited through an internet survey. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the four first-order factors (hope, optimism, resilience, and self-efficacy) and one second-order factor (PsyCap) model of the previous study is appropriate for the Japanese context. In addition, Cronbach’s α and omega-higher-order of CPC-12R were sufficient. The measurement invariance analysis suggested sufficient scalar invariances for the employees and university students and across genders. The Japanese version of the CPC-12R had moderate positive correlations with job satisfaction, work engagement, conscientiousness, and extraversion, as well as a moderate negative correlation with negative emotionality. These findings provide evidence for sufficient reliability and construct validity of the Japanese version of the CPC-12R.

While job identity is significantly related to personality traits and adaptation to the work environment, few studies have focused on job identity profile or on its relationships with the characteristics of young adults. This study aimed to identify the identity profiles of young workers in Japan and examine their associations with these employees’ personality traits, job satisfaction, work engagement, and emotional impairment. The survey participants were 500 working Japanese young adults (46.6% female; Mage = 26.12, SD = 2.34). The results of the latent profile analysis identified four job identity profiles: achievement, closure, moratorium, and diffusion. The results of the Chi-square test indicated that young adults in part-time employment were more likely to be classified under the moratorium profile than full-time workers. The results of the multivariate analysis of variance indicated that young adults with high commitment profiles (i.e., the achievement and closure profiles) had higher job satisfaction and work engagement than those with low commitment profiles (i.e., the moratorium and diffusion profiles). Future research directions and managerial implications were finally discussed.

This paper describes the development of a software program that supports argumentative reading and writing, especially for novice students. The software helps readers create a graphic organizer from the text as a knowledge map while they are reading and use their prior knowledge to build their own opinion as new information while they think about writing their essays. Readers using this software can read a text, underline important words or sentences, pick up and dynamically cite the underlined portions of the text onto a knowledge map as quotation nodes, illustrate a knowledge map by linking the nodes, and later write their opinion as an essay while viewing the knowledge map; thus, the software bridges argumentative reading and writing. Sixty-three freshman and sophomore students with no prior argumentative reading and writing education participated in a design case study to evaluate the software in classrooms. Thirty-four students were assigned to a class in which each student developed a knowledge map after underlining and/or highlighting a text with the software, while twenty-nine students were assigned to a class in which they simply wrote their essays after underlining and/or highlighting the text without creating knowledge maps. After receiving an instruction regarding a simplified Toulmin's model followed by instructions for the software usage in argumentative reading and writing along with reading one training text, the students read the target text and developed their essays. The results revealed that students who drew a knowledge map based on the underlining and/or highlighting of the target text developed more argumentative essays than those who did not draw maps. Further analyses revealed that developing knowledge maps fostered an ability to capture the target text's argument, and linking students' ideas to the text's argument directly on the knowledge map helped students develop more constructive essays. Accordingly, we discussed additional necessary scaffolds, such as automatic argument detection and collaborative learning functions, for improving the students' use of appropriate reading and writing strategies.

<p>The purpose of this research is to develop a Student Leadership Behavior Scale (SLBS) in leadership education based on experiencial learning in university, and to test its reliability and validity. The 54-items scale was constructed using items from previous research and data from preliminary survey, and was administered to 156 undergraduate students (Time 1). To assess the test-retest reliability, 110 subjects (Time 2) repeated the rating within a month interval. Exploratory and confirmatory factor-analysis revealed a six-factor model including the following factors: Modeling, Challenge, Goal Sharing, Goal Management, Task-Oriented Support, and People-Oriented Support. In addition, 30 items were selected for increasing the feasibility. The scale showed high internal consistency and test–retest reliability, and moderately correlated with the Team Work Scale.</p>

This study describes a method of self-assessment for learners in a collaborative discussion. The authors propose a method of self-assessment in an online discussion and examine its effectiveness through the development and evaluation of a software program to visualize the discussion on a Bulletin Board System. The software, referred to as "i-Bee" (Bulletin board Enrollee Envisioner), can visually display the co-occurrence relation between keywords and learners. Thus, the i-Bee can display the content-wise contribution made by each learner to the discussion. In addition, the i-Bee can display the recent level of participation of each learner and the frequency of each keyword used by the learners. The i-Bee enables students to assess and reflect over their discussion, to understand the condition, and to reorganize their commitment in a discussion reflecting their learning activity.

The aim of this study is to examine learning by middle management through the experience of new business incubation. We carried out a study consisting of semi-structured interviews of 15 middle managers working in new business departments of private enterprises. We analyzed the qualitative data from the 15 participants on the basis of the Modified Grounded Theory Approach(M-GTA) and constructed a learning process model. As a result of the M-GTA based analysis, it became clear that the learning of middle management through the experience of new business incubation had four phases: I. the responsibility avoidance phase, II. the reality acceptance phase, III. the critical reflection phase, and IV. the perspective transformation phase.

The purpose of the study was to examine how executive secretaries learned from their experiences at work and what their learning experiences were. This study was conducted through semi-structured interviews with thirteen executive secretaries. Interview records were then analyzed with the Modified Grounded Theory Approach. The results of the analysis indicated that the learning process moved from Phase 1: "obtaining basic knowledge and abilities" to Phase 2: "acquiring specific knowledge of their bosses", "organizational knowledge relating to their bosses", and "knowledge of the whole company", and furthermore, to Phase 3: "prompt unlearning current role of secretary and being able to reconstruct new one". Finally, results indicated that the learning process moved back and forth between Phase 2 and 3.

Although "school-to-work transition" has recently attracted considerable attention, most studies on this topic have conducted retrospective surveys. Some existing studies have recently focused on students' experiences at university. However, the studies do not provide perspectives on effect of students' experiences on proactive behavior. Therefore, this study focuses on proactive behavior at work that could be linked to outcomes of active learning at universities. Using surveys conducted over three years, form 2010 to 2013, and covariance structure analysis, this study investigates the effects of undergraduates' learning behavior and student-life fulfillment on proactive behavior after joining their work organization. The data revealed that students who belong to an out-of-class community and who have a sense of fulfillment in their student life display a positive effect on their proactive behavior.

    • What is the Impact of “Leadership Development Program thorough Regional Problem-solving”?: Program Design and Evaluation by Action Peer-reviewed

      NAKAHARA Jun

        15   241 - 266   3 2015

      Language:Japanese

The objective of this paper is to examine the effect of “leadership development program thorough regional problem-solving” in particularly the learning that occurs in relation to the planning, supervision, and facilitation that the author conducted at the request of the corporate human resources departments. This program was conducted over the course of approximately six months from May through October 2014. Heterogeneous teams were formed with managers from five companies in differing industries. The program focused on action-based learning with the teams that first explored the regional problems confronting the town of Biei in Hokkaido, followed by a process of making proposals to the mayor and citizens of Biei on possible solutions to these problems. People in management are usually in charge of focusing not only on day-to-day operations but also on innovation within their organizations, and their role is to serve as primary agents that guide the development of the next generation of managers from among the diverse membership of the organization. However, active inertia gained after an organization excessively adapts to daily management often obstructs this role. This program offers an opportunity to those viewed as nextgeneration leaders from these five companies in differing industries to solve regional problems prevalent outside their organizations by working with managers from other companies and in doing so, aim to relativize their “fixed perspective” formed from active inertia. Additional objectives of the training are to further increase the participants’ desire for innovative behavior, allow them to encounter a greater range of people, and make them accustomed to thinking from a management perspective.

Reading literacy that enables people not only to understand text correctly but also to think deeply based on facts on the text, and to present their own opinion becomes increasingly important. In this paper, we have developed software which supports practice of reading literacy. The software allows a reader to relate portions of the text and their prior knowledge in order to produce their own opinion as new knowledge, that is referred to as "constructive reading", with e-documents. The reader using eJournalPlus can read a text, underline important words or sentences on the text, illustrate a concept map based on the text, and write his/her opinion down as an essay and edit it. The experimental class evaluation using eJournalPlus was conducted, revealing that students who drew a concept map based on the target text showed better performance on their essays from the viewpoint of constructive reading than those who did not draw the concept map.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the process on the effect of principals' leadership on the autonomous school management, focusing on the mediating effect of school social capital, and how these organizational factors interacted with each other in order to facilitate a school's autonomous management. A questionnaire was distributed to 547 teachers in a total of 22 elementary and junior high schools in city A in Tokyo. Valid responses were received from 320 teachers. Following the survey, interviews with 5 principals were conducted to gain an understanding of their leadership style. This study examined the hypothesis that the autonomous school is facilitated by two factors: (1) a principal's leadership, in particular one that is facilitative and charismatic; (2) school social capital, that is, qualitative social capital and network social capital. In addition, the hypothesis that the relationship between the principal's leadership and the autonomous management is mediated by the social capital was also investigated. A structural model was developed on the basis of these hypotheses and tested by covariance structure analysis. First, the results indicated that facilitative leadership had positive effects on autonomous school management. Second, school social capital, especially horizontal social capital and vertical social capital between teachers and middle management teachers, had a positive influence on autonomous school management. Third, these social capital were found to mediate relationships between facilitative leadership and school autonomous management. Especially, horizontal social capital had a strong mediating effect, therefore it is suggested that it is more effective for a principal intending to increase such social capital for the purpose of building school capacity. In conclusion, it indicated that facilitative leadership is an appropriate leadership approach in constructing an autonomous management school in Japan.

This paper describes an experiment in group counseling with a robot as a facilitator, for the purpose of examining the following issues; 1) whether the group counseling sessions are effective, and 2) whether the robot can facilitate participants to actively talk on their own initiative. The authors measured the participants' self-efficacy before and after the experiment using questionnaires, and counted the number of proactive utterances of each participant during the sessions. The authors compared the experimental groups with a robot facilitator that was manipulated by professional human facilitators and the control groups led by other professional human facilitators without the robot. The result showed that the group counseling sessions with the robot facilitator worked as well as the controlled sessions with the human facilitator. In addition, the participants in the experimental sessions talked on their own initiative much more than those in the controlled sessions. Finally, the authors qualitatively examined the contents of the utterances in the experimental sessions, and revealed that those utterances in the experimental sessions made the participants join the dialogue for promoting the counseling on their own initiative. In addition, the authors discussed the possibility and necessity of improvements of the robot as a group counseling facilitator.

In the present article, we examined the effects of the plan-do-check-act (PDCA) cycle and on-the-job-training (OJT) on workplace learning. We defined workplace learning based on the concept of an organizational learning cycle. Using survey data from a Japanese fire and marine insurance company, we found that PDCA, OJT (empowerment), and reflective communication had positive effects on workplace learning. These results suggest that quality management, empowerment and reflective practice may help to significantly improve workplace learning. We also discuss theoretical and managerial implications of this study.

We developed a card game teaching material named &quot;Connect the World 2&quot;. It aims at improving psychological factors that facilitate cooperative behaviors in social dilemmas, which increasingly become one of serious issues in modern society. The teaching material has a feature that offers participants two roles at both individual and group levels by adding a &quot;group&quot; role to previous social dilemma games which has been widely-used and targeting only at individual level. We investigated the effects through a comparative experiment between the &quot;Connect the World 2&quot; and the previous version of the game with only &quot;individual role&quot;. As a result, the &quot;Connect the World 2&quot; showed more effects on enhancement of &quot;Trust&quot; that believes others&#039; cooperation in social dilemmas. Furthermore, our results suggested possibility of improvement on &quot;Ascribed responsibility&quot; that is assumed to lead acquisition of moral obligations.

This study aims to verify the effectiveness of English language materials using mobile devices for businesspeople in terms of the effect on motivation, overall learning performance, and practical performance in real business situations. We compared the use of materials developed from business English for a sales department in a company environment, using two cohorts of learners, one from the sales division and the other from other divisions in the company. The results showed that the materials were effective for the enhancement of motivation in both groups of employees. Moreover, the test scores in overall learning performance for both cohorts increased after learning with the materials. However, the learners in sales positions recognized the effectiveness of the output activities (e.g., speaking) more than that of nonsales personnel because of the direct applicability of the learning materials to their business needs.

The purpose of this study is to empirically examine the impact of service-learning in higher education in Japan, on "attitudes toward social participation" and the acquisition of "generic skills" as learning outcomes, carried out at the Hiroshima University of Economics Koudoukan Project. In this study, a measurement of the "attitude toward social participation" was composed and a longitudinal questionnaire survey was conducted. The subjects were 94 students taking part in the Koudoukan Project and 66 students in Hiroshima University of Economics not taking part in the project, who constituted the control group. At the same time, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 5 students attending the project, for the purposes of supplement the results of the quantitative survey. As a result of factor analysis, attitudes toward social participation were shown to consist of 3 factors - a consciousness of social contribution, a sense of social effectiveness, and a consciousness of privatization - and generic skills were shown to consist of 3 factors-motivation skills, communication skills, and logical skills. The result of this study indicates that students who experienced Koudoukan Project acquired a "sense of social effectiveness" which would permit them to influence and revolutionize society.

Japanese lesson study as led by teachers themselves has hitherto served to contribute to the professional development of Japanese teachers. On the other hand, lesson study has become difficult to perform in recent years in Japan. Factors that have been noted as reasons are the space and time limitations inherent in lesson study. To overcome this situation, the authors have developed a Web-based lesson study program, called the "eLESSER (LESson Study practitionER) program." Two expert teachers carried out the lessons and performed commentary activities and two novice teachers participated as observers. We found: 1) the four teachers thought that the eLESSER program was different from the lesson study they had experienced up to that time and effective as a novel scheme for lesson study. The eLESSER program has resolved most of the space and time limitations, and enabled deep and detailed discussion about classes. Novice teachers could observe the process of refining lesson plans by expert teachers. 2) Expert teachers changed lesson plans for classroom teaching based on one another's comments and discussion on Web sites of eLESSER. 3) The teachers came to consensus during the process of refining the lesson plans. It was confirmed: 4) expert teachers had reflected on their teaching while changing a previous lesson plan.

In this paper we propose new quantitative metrics that express the characteristics of current general practices in slide-based presentation methodology. The proposed metrics are numerical expressions of: 'To what extent are the materials being presented in the prepared order?' and 'What is the degree of separation between the displays of the presenter and the audience?'. Through the use of these metrics, it becomes possible to quantitatively evaluate various extended methods designed to improve presentations. We illustrate examples of calculation and visualization for the proposed metrics. © 2010 ACM.

The purposes of the present research were to examine the structure of the concerns of junior faculty members at universities, and to analyze the relationship of their concerns, social supports, and job satisfaction. To measure their concerns, a scale of educational concerns of junior faculty members was prepared. Using this scale, the interactions among their concerns, social supports, and feelings of satisfaction toward their job were analyzed. Factor analysis of the scale resulted in the extraction of 3 factors: "concerns about teaching abilities," "concerns about students," and "concerns about organization and logistics." Support from senior faculty member increased the satisfaction of the junior members of the faculty who had a high level of educational concerns. In addition, lack of support from colleagues decreased the satisfaction of those junior members of the faculty who had a high level of concern about organization and logistics. These results suggest that supports in the workplace are especially important in increasing feelings of job satisfaction of those junior faculty members who have a high level of concern.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze what most Japanese junior faculty are concerned with and how much they perceive having supports provided to them by their institutions. Two surveys were conducted, a quantitative survey for 103 junior faculty through the internet, and a questionnaire survey for all higher education institutions in Japan. Our analysis found that the courses that are provided by colleges do not meet the needs of junior faculty. There are considerable gaps between services provided by universities, standards of the universities, and the needs of junior faculty. While junior faculty are mostly concerned about their teaching skills, colleges or universities do not provide substantial enough supports to improve instructional skills; instead, they provide overview or introductory orientation courses about their institutions. These place an emphasis on explanative facts rather than teacher training, and smaller departments tend to have difficulty providing any supports for junior faculty at all. Areas which need intensive training are in high demand, therefore, a way to support faculty in smaller institutions should be established.

There has been a noticeable trend in recent years, in which not only schools, but also society as a whole, attempt to help children learn science. However, few studies have been conducted on improving the science learning environment at home. Our research team has therefore developed an educational program called "OYAKO de Science," meaning "parent-child science program," which supports children and their parents in learning science through hands-on experiments at home. This program has been designed to teach participants about light for three weeks. The program consists of two workshops, which all participants attend, and learning activities in which each parent-child pair can participate at home on their own. To improve the science learning environment at home, three essential factors were incorporated into this program: hands-on experiments that would involve both child and parent; learning cycle of "prediction-experiment-result-explanation"; continuous learning through the use of cell phones. 60 pairs of parent and 4th or 5th grade child participated in this demonstration project. The result of project assessment showed the following three points: (a) The children participating in "OYAKO de Science" enjoyed performing experiments with their parents. They thought much about light in predicting the outcomes of the experiments, and while referring to the other children's predictions, they reviewed their own; at the same time, they became more motivated in the experiments they were going to perform. Furthermore, they were able to carry out the experiments mostly during the three-week program, and highly evaluated the use of cell phones as learning support tools, (b) The participants in "OYAKO de Science" were able to improve two important aspects in their learning environments at home: personal relevance-the ability to relate what one has learned to events in one's own life; uncertainty-recognition of the fact that science involves inventing theories and that it is influenced by people's ideas, (c) The three essential factors of "OYAKO de Science" were associated with improving the two aspects of the learning environment at home, "personal relevance" and "uncertainty."

How do learners perceive other learners who learn on the Internet together but never actually meet? Does the presence of other learners on the internet influence the learning process just like face-to-face situations or conditions? We traced the learning processes of learners who were learning in a community on the internet, where learners learn the basic mechanics of robots by making robots by themselves. They were expected to upload their works to the WWW, and comment on their works to each other using a bulletin board. We found that learners perceive other learners as real friends even though they have never met in a face-to-face situation; for example, one of our subjects made great progress making robots. Our interview showed that his big incentive to make robots is a competitive mindset to win a competition and also the feeling that he wanted to show off his works to other learners. Conversely, there was a learner who didn't upload her robots because her shyness affected her motivation to show her works. In each case, the existence of other learners itself influenced the learning process of learners. Once they obtained tele-presence of other learners, the learning process on the Internet became essentially comparable to face-to-face communication, with the exception that learners obtain different types of information there.

This chapter describes a method of self-assessment for learners in a collaborative discussion. The authors propose this method of self-assessment in an online discussion and examine its effectiveness through the development and evaluation of a software program in order to visualize the discussion on a bulletin board system. The software, referred to as the "Bulletin board Enrollee Envisioner" (i-Bee), can visually display the co-occurrence relation between keywords and learners. Thus, i-Bee can display content-wise contributions made by each learner to the discussion. In addition, i-Bee can display the recent level of participation of each learner and the frequency of the learner's use of each keyword. Through the evaluation, the authors revealed that i-Bee enables students to assess and reflect upon their discussion, understand the condition, and reorganize their commitment in a discussion that reflects their learning activity. © 2007, Idea Group Inc.

The program is titled "Oyako de Science: Learning about Science ;with Parents (OYAKO)" Under the OYAKO program a child learns about the subject "light" for three weeks. The program consists of: 1) experiments by children and their parents together, 2) experiments by the children alone, 3) documentation using workbooks or drills. In the OYAKO program cell phones are used as tools to elicit from the parents, what we consider to be "the engagement of parents in their children's learning. " We expect that with the participation of parents and thus their engagement in their child's education.

A web-based collaborative learning sites has the bulletin board system (BBS) and allow learners to interact, exchange information, engage in discussion, and collaborate on projects. This paper outlines the development and evaluation of iTree, a Java mobile phone application that encourages learners to participate in online BBS forums. In essence, the application reminds the students of their level of participation in a class BBS forum via an image on the wallpaper on their mobile phones. Postings to the forum are represented as a tree, the growth of which reflects the learner's degree of participation. Our evaluation has shown that iTree encourages learners to engaging in forum exchange in a positive light. Many learners have come to regard iTree as a useful learning tool..

This study focuses upon undergraduate students' learning about astronomy while using a bulletin board system in a course. We analyzed students' messages to the bulletin board qualitatively and developed schematic representations tor interactions among members and for knowledge changes by individuals. A schematic analysis showed a process of collaborative construction of knowledge. This qualitative analysis confirmed that changes in individuals' knowledge were influenced by the interactions among members. Collaborative learning in the context of using the bulletin board system may enhance the undergraduate students' understanding of disciplinary knowledge in the domain of astronomy.

This study aims at examining what kind of indexes are applicable to grasp learners' condition of participation or tendency of learners' statement on BBS. Twelve indexes for grasping learners' condition of participation, and three indexes for grasping tendency of learners' statement are calculated automatically with a system we developed and displayed on the web browser. We calculated these indexes based on a log data of an e-learning class, and investigated their validity through questionnaire and interview. The result shows that the diversity of posted words is relatively appropriate to grasp learners' condition of participation, because it had strong correlation with assessment of learners' condition of participation by estimators who grasp the communication on BBS well. It is also implied that indexes of tendency of learners' statement are available to take a general view of discussion on BBS.

In online discussion, sometime people get confused about what kind of topic they are talking about. So it is necessary for participant to grasp the topic of their discussion. Many prior research related to BBS have been conducted. However few researchers focused on the &quot;visual communication design(VCD)&quot; when they try to consider how the interface of BBS should be. The purpose of this paper is to develop and to evaluate the special function which allows participant to understand what kind of topics they discuss in BBS from the viewpoint of &quot;VCD&quot;. At first, we point out the one problem of the previous system which can visualize the discussion by correspondence analysis. Then, we re-examnine it from the VCD and incorporate some new expressions into and remodel it. As the evaluation of the new system, we find how effective it is and how accurately participant understand the topic of their discussion.

This paper describes an assessment tool to visualize the communication among learners on electronic forums. The authors have developed the software which clarifies the relationship between topic keywords and each learner with Correspondence Analysis. Thus the software called "i-Bee" (Bulletin board Enrollee Envisioner) represents a map between topic parts and students' commitments in the learning community. In this paper, the authors examine effectiveness of the software through an experimental study in a course at a university. The results show that i-Bee promotes students to grasp their commitments in the discussion or transition of their commitments. This promotes students to access messages which they do not care, and to reflect and review their commitments.

This paper describes a proposal for a new method to assess communication among learners in the CSCL. The method proposed in this paper is to visualize discussions by focusing on the relationship between topic keywords and each learner using Correspondence Analysis. In this paper, the authors examine validity and possibility of the proposed method, through an experimental study in a cross-cultural CSCL program. The correspondence map made by the analysis could represent topic parts and learners' commitment in the learning community, according to interviews with Japanese and foreign learners. Also the map has a potentiality to help learners engage in active discussions by providing reflection of their own interest or that of others. From another interview with a Japanese teacher, It has been shown that the map has the effect to support teachers and moderators to evaluate and facilitate the learners' discussions.

First, we build theoretical base in organization development through revisiting philosophical roots and integrating previous literature. Second, we enrich the repertoire of organization development in terms of an interaction between micro level (human resource development and leadership) and macro level (institution). Third, we prepare the methodology which includes action science. Finally, we suggest future research that researchers need to develop methods with respect to each organization and response different needs involving dialogue with practitioner.

      Grant number:17700626

      Grant amount:\3000000 ( Direct Cost: \3000000 )
