      This paper examines the unique characteristics of the Chinese shadow banking system, identifies its structural characteristics, and emphasizes its impact on the Japanese economy. In recent years, after three decades of financial repression, the Chinese government has been rapidly promoting the universalization of traditional banking. The Chinese shadow banking system ("Yingzi Yinhang" in Chinese) emerged as most domestic financial institutions took advantage of shortcomings in the existing financial regulation, where a banking institution was supervised as per its industrial sector categorization. For example, banks could provide diversified financial products and services, all named as "wealth management products" that were effectively unconstrained by financial regulation. The banks and trust companies would cooperate to create a new pool of funds. Companies are financially supporting each other, directly and secretly, instead of going through formal financial institutions. Further, companies are willing to help other companies, with whom they have a good relationship, to cash discounted bills and create an interbank financial market as well. This study indicates that the Chinese shadow banking system is an example of pooling the surplus profits of banking institutions, which is a function of the slow pace of deregulation. Furthermore,in China, local government finances have long been under significant pressure. Without strengthening their financial base, these local governments would be unable to fulfill the expanded capital needs. Hence, the problem of the Chinese shadow banking system is considered a result of outdated financial policy, rather than a market phenomenon found in countries with a sound financial system. As the Chinese shadow banking system was formed domestically by unique economic and political factors, its influence on the Japanese economy in the event of a future collapse will be limited, as capital transactions have not yet been liberalized in China.

      This study intends to clarify the development of the Taiwanese electric power industry by analyzing the Jitsugetsutan Project during the interwar period. Taiwan was then under Japanese colonial rule. The project has therefore been traditionally referred to in the literature as an example of a special enterprise established and owned by the Japanese government in order to strengthen its military sector under its "southern advance" policy.<BR>In this study, the author attempts to re-examine such traditional views on the role of the project by tracing the project from its planning stage to completion. The analysis sheds new light on the relationship between the Taiwanese colonial government and the trends of related markets, especially the financial market in Japan and the state of demand for electric power that the enterprise was expected to supply.<BR>Our analysis reveals that the project, which was initiated in 1919, had to be cancelled once in 1926 because of the banking crisis and the lack of demand in the first half of the 1920s. When the project was resumed in 1928, it was the chemical fertilizer industry that turned out to be a potential and major consumer of its electric power. However, the final plans changed again. The aluminum industry was to become the major consumer of its electric power in 1932.<BR>This re-examination leads to the conclusion that the project was not based on the military goals of the Japanese government but on the industrial policy of the Taiwanese colonial government and the economic motivation of the Japanese industry. Although it is undeniable that the completion of the project brought a rapid growth of the aluminum industry and it consequently strengthened military power a great deal, this should be interpreted as the effect of the project, not as its cause.

      The subject of this research is to examine the high economic growth of post-war Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and China in East Asia in economic history, and to attempt international comparison.
      East Asia has experienced high average annual growth of around 10% based on industrialization, including the Japanese economy, and has become a developed country from developing countries. In the history of humankind, it is only in East Asia that neighboring countries have achieved high growth based on such industrialization with a time lag. In order to interpret these phenomena, we took economic historical methods, clarified the high growth mechanism of each, and tried to compare the results. So far, “High Growth as History: East Asian Experience” (2019) has been published and the analysis results have been transmitted to academia.

      The purpose of this research project is to analyze the connection between overseas expansion and internal labor markets of companies in prewar Japan. It focuses on pay raises, promotions, transfers, and changes in personnel, and utilizes the employee records of the Taiwan Sugar Manufacturing Company, the leading company in its industry in Colonial Taiwan. The analysis shows that the company utilized Japanese "nenko" personnel practices, although there was a difference of degree, for both Japanese and Taiwanese white‐collar workers. Because of the good managing conditions and the aspect of “semi-statutory company”, Taiwan Sugar Manufacturing Company could use pragmatic management practices.

      This course analyzes digital data for Utsumi's diary written during 1910 to 1927, obtained by utilizing SMART-GS Tool, a software program created and developed by National Kyoto University. It is based on three perspectives, the formation of Japanese bureaucratic system, it's mobility and networking among the bureaucrats. Furthermore, the research explores in detail the facts and the factors that contribute to the rising numbers of Japanese Colonial bureaucrats.
      With the bureaucrats' point of view, attempt is then made to re-evaluate the Japanese Empire.

      The Japanese colonial study from the viewpoint of history of imperialism made much of rule relations. As a result, subordination and stagnation were emphasized excessively. This is problems. The Japanese colonial studies from the viewpoint of history of empire made much of cultural variety and a social change. It caused the diffusion situations for this results or studies. This is problems, too. So this study of economic developments of colonial Taiwan was pushed forward by the both sides of colonial characteristics and market economy characteristics. And we made much of proof characteristics. we paid attention to market mechanism as a universal system and analyzed a Taiwanese market system. We think with the characteristic of the colony where the deviation was buried in a market economy.

      In this study project, we got the academic achievement of the following three points mainly. First, we regarded the phenomenon of the rapid economic growth of Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan as one historical change related mutually deeply. Second, by taking advantage of the superiority of a joint international research, we analyzed empirically in combination with each other new materials in each country. Third, we have analyzed the important individual industry of that time of South Korea and Taiwan in detail from the various viewpoints which are not limited in one country.
      During the research period, we held two big open Symposium and eight international joint seminar. These research activities could give the impact which is not small to the Asia economic-history research, and promoted the research exchange between Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. We pursue editing the collected papers of the result of research and publishing in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, respectively.
