    • Exploring the Effectiveness of DDL in Mandatory Undergraduate English Education in Japan International conference

      Language:English   Presentation type:Poster presentation

      Venue:Aston University

This poster presentation explores the implementation and the effectiveness of Data-Driven Learning (DDL) in a mandatory Reading & Writing course for 23 first-year undergraduates at a Japanese private university during the 2024 academic year. Targeting students with CEFR A2-B1 proficiency, the course focused on developing academic reading and writing skills through strategies such as skimming, annotating, drafting, and revising, and vocabulary building. Despite pedagogical and time constraints such as a unified syllabus and an assigned textbook, which are commonly encountered in English Language Teaching (ELT) in tertiary education in Japan, the students expressed high satisfaction with DDL. However, an analysis of their completed paragraph submitted by the students indicated that its impact on practical writing skills was limited, as previously observed by Miura and Satake (2024). This preliminary study underscores the potential of DDL in fostering lexical awareness while highlighting the need for further refinement to enhance its application in academic writing for lower-level English learners in Japan.

This study aims to illustrate potential cultural issues Japanese learners of English may encounter when reading materials from globally published English Language Teaching (ELT) coursebooks, particularly focusing on interactional tips for encouraging small talk in first-time meetings. The author examines two educational contexts in Japan: (i) a mandatory ELT course for reading and writing skills for approximately 20 undergraduates at CEFR levels A2–B1, and (ii) a postgraduate course on intercultural communication in language teaching attended by six students from Japan, the U.S., and China, most of whom were pre-service language educators. This paper highlights the need for explicit, intentional instruction to enhance learners’ pragmatic awareness of both L1 and L2, which is generally overlooked in Japan’s ELT practices.

This study examines how graduate students develop their learner/teacher agency within a course on intercultural communication in language teaching, with a particular focus on English Language Teaching (ELT) in Japan. The presentation aims to report how enrolled students cultivated their teacher/learner agency, which involves the ability to recognize and address potential challenges in intercultural communication and language teaching (c.f., Ishihara, 2019; Ishihara & Porcellato, 2022; Liddicoat, 2023; McConachy & Liddicoat, 2022; Liddicoat & McConachy, 2019). The presentation will describe how students contextualized their metapragmatic awareness in their analyses and projects, incorporated intercultural perspectives, and provided educational insights.

The current study aimed to extract criterial features of pragmatic competence of Japanese learners of English at different proficiency levels (i.e., the CEFR A1, A2 and B1 levels), investigating the NICT JLE Corpus. The author constructed annotation schemes to extract and analyze linguistic features of requestive speech acts and the utterance functions in shopping role plays. The study confirmed the results derived from the past studies which adopted the predominant approaches to investigating requests using the elicitation tasks: the use of conventionally indirect features (e.g., ability modals "can") tended to increase and that of direct features (e.g., ellipses and desire verbs "want") decrease with increasing proficiency, but B1 group showed some pragmatically deviant performance. The use of the NICT JLE Corpus allowed the author not only to profile what learners can actually do pragmatically at each level, but also supplement the non-corpus-based past studies with corpus evidence.
