      Abstract

The present study examined whether maximizing tendency predicts Japanese adults' likelihood of getting married and their age at first marriage. Registered members of a survey company panel (n = 428) completed the Japanese version of the Relational Maximization Scale, which was used to assess maximizing tendency consisting of two factors. The first factor, “high standards,” was not related to either of the two variables under investigation. The second factor, “alternative search,” was positively related to age at first marriage but not to the likelihood of getting married. The results thus suggest that those who seek the best possible marriage partner tend to get married at a later age, but that they are as likely to get married as those who do not. The finding that maximizing tendency did not significantly predict the likelihood of marriage suggests that getting married remains a strong social norm in Japan.

Few studies have examined changes in network size during the past 20 years in Japan despite changes in many other aspects of Japanese society that could affect Japanese social relationships. I conducted a time-series cross-sectional survey to investigate changes in network size for married Japanese people from 1993 to 2014. Results follow: 1) core network sizes decreased slightly; 2) the number of married males with no core network outside their households increased slightly; 3) kin and neighbour network sizes decreased and friend network size increased among married females; 4) kin network size decreased among married males; and 5) the probability of younger married males having no network friends increased. Overall, changes in network sizes were small, and we cannot conclude that serious social decay occurs among married Japanese people. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Previous studies explored various predictors of network size by examining their effects on mean network size. However, such predictors may not affect the entire distribution of network size uniformly. In the present study, I theoretically predict that extroversion and neuroticism affect the right side of the network size distribution to a greater extent than the left side and test these predictions using quantile regression analysis. The results showed that the effects of extroversion on the size of the inner and outer layers of personal network were significantly greater when the prediction target was the third quartile than when it was the first quartile. The results also showed that although the effects of neuroticism on the inner layer size were significant, that on the outer layer size were not. When the target variable was inner layer size, the relationship between neuroticism and inner layer size was stronger when the prediction target was the third quartile than when it was the first quartile. Traditionally, research in social psychology has focused on the mean values of target variables. In most cases, this is simply because the mean value is the target of most statistical methods and often does not reflect the theoretical basis. Consequently, this has narrowed the perspective of researchers and possibly caused misunderstandings of social phenomena. In this study, we introduce quantile regression to solve this problem, which predicts the pth percentile of a target variable for any value of p. As an example, we theoretically predicted that the effect of extraversion on personal network size is different among the right (upper) and left (lower) parts of the distribution and tested this prediction using quantile regression. The result showed that extraversion positively correlates with the 70th-90th percentile of personal network size to a greater extent than that of the 30th-10th percentile. This result indicates that the distribution of personal network size not only moves toward the right but also becomes right-skewed as extraversion increases.

Many findings of previous research have supported the predictions of the emancipation theory of trust (Yamagishi, 2011) in experimental settings. Although the key concept of the theory is social uncertainty, few studies of the concept have been conducted in natural settings. In the present study, we operationally defined social uncertainty by comparing kin and nonkin relationships. We analyzed survey data representative of the Japanese population and compared the exchange of social support between kin and nonkin. The prediction was that commitment helps respondents construct cooperative nonkin relationships more than it does kin relationships, and general trust helps only resource-rich respondents to do so. The results supported the predictions. The study found significant interactions with relationship type x commitment and relationship type x household income x general trust. The patterns of mean score for social support exchanged were consistent with the predictions. High trusters with low household income exchanged more support independent of the relationship type.

Acquaintance volume, total size of personal/egocentric network including relatively sheer, inactive relationships, is a key concept in some important theory of social science such as subcultural theory of urbanism, emancipation theory of trust, and social capital. However factors correlating with acquaintance volume have not been identified well. In the present study, we measured acquaintance volume with a telephone book method and explored effects of some predictors on median and wide range of quantiles of acquaintance volume by quantile regression. Results showed positive effects of age, education, household income, use of cellular phones, and general trust on median of acquaintance volume. From the comparison of coefficients of regression models predicting q90, q50, and q10, we identified four predictors of network hubs: age, education, city size, and interpersonal anxiety. While age and education increased q90 more than q50 and q10, city size and interpersonal anxiety decreased q90 more than q50 and q10.

The present study examined attitude similarity among the Japanese using data from a national representative dyadic survey. The Euclidean distance of responses to eight 4-point survey items measuring the values of the respondents and alters was used as the index of the attitude similarity of dyads. Relationships between attitude similarity and urbanism and the size of one's personal network were measured as indexes of relational selectability. Multilevel analyses revealed the following results: (1) attitude similarity was significantly high among the Japanese; (2) the size of one's personal network positively and significantly correlated with attitude similarity; and (3) the correlation remained significant even when the similarity of demographic profiles was controlled. These results imply that attitude similarity is determined not by relational structure at the societal level but rather relational structure at the personal network level. The implications of the findings that attitude similarity was relatively weak and did not correlate with urbanism in regard to the subcultural theory of urbanism (Fischer, 1982) are discussed.

The purpose of this study is to examine the validity and possible measurement bias of the number of acquaintances registered on the "address book" of cellular phones (address book size) as the index of the size of personal network using national survey data. The first objective is to reveal who uses address book and results showed that 1) only 60 percent of respondents uses address book, 2) the utilization rate is higher when the respondents are younger, highly educated, having high income, or living in urban areas. Respondents' age and income has stronger impact on the utilization than the other factors. The second objective is to examine the external validity of address book size as the index of the size of personal network. Result shows that the estimate of telephone book method positively correlates with address book size. The correlations are stronger when the respondents are living in urban areas. Respondents ' age does not moderate the correlation.

Victim-blaming has been studied extensively, especially in the context of sexual violence. In the present study, the distribution of opinion with regard to female victims of sexual violence among people in the respondents' networks was used to explain their victim-blaming tendency. Data from respondents' personal networks were collected, and the results revealed that respondents' attitudes towards victim-blaming correlated positively with the proportion of network others who had positive attitudes towards victim-blaming. The correlation was stronger among respondents who had low concern for the issue. The results supported a model of information bias of personal network on attitudes.

Based on Axelrod's adaptive culture model, the effects of the distribution of global information feedback are examined in two simulations. The first model is the generalized other model, where the most preferred features are hypothesized to represent the mental model of the most ordinary person and have the same influential power as real neighbors. The second model is the filter model, where neighbors are influential only when their traits are concordant with the most common trait among whole agents. In both simulations, the global distribution of information facilitated an earlier convergence and maintenance of cultural diversity. These counterintuitive results suggest that information about a global society, for example mass media coverage, would provide support for a local minority.

"Sharing norms" has rarely been studied directly though it is one of the most important key-concepts in self-effacement research. The present study examined the effects of sharing norms on individual behavior by operationalizing the degree thereof regarding self-effacement. Two levels of sharing were measured : in a personal network and in a social system. It was predicted that both levels of sharing would be positively correlated with individual self-effacement behavior. A mail survey covering 12 local communities in Japan was conducted. The results showed that people engage in self-effacement more frequently when 1) positive evaluation and behavior regarding self-effacement were shared in their personal network and 2) behavior regarding self-effacement was shared in the communities where the respondents live. Sharing in a personal network was also correlated with individual attitude toward self-effacement. We discussed the differences of the roles that sharing in a personal network and social system plays in terms of self-effacement.

Self-effacement has become an important topic in cross-cultural social psychology. However, descriptive characteristics of self-effacement have rarely been investigated. Based on representative network survey data, this study examined to whom Japanese people efface themselves. The results indicated as follows: 1) people tend to efface themselves to their neighbors or mere acquaintances more than to their spouses, colleagues, or best friends; 2) the duration of the relationship correlated negatively with self-effacement; 3) the relationship between psychological intimacy and self-effacement shaped reversed-U; and 4) people tend to efface themselves to maintain or attenuate their status difference, i.e., people efface themselves more to colleagues when the people considered those colleagues to be superior to them, and also to best friends when they considered those friends to be inferior to them.

The present study reveals that there is a gender bias in estimates of spouses' political expertise. Data were collected from married couples in one city in north-eastern Japan and the results showed that when all respondents were included, the estimation of spouses' political expertise was moderately accurate. However, while husbands' estimates of the political expertise of their wives were lowered and less accurate, wives' estimates of the political expertise of their husbands were more accurate. The implication of these findings for the political equality of males and females is discussed.

We investigated self-effacement as an interpersonal issue. We focused on not only people who effaced themselves, but also on the communication targets to whom they showed their self-effacement. A mail survey was conducted to collect representative dyadic data. The results illustrate the social and interactive nature of self-effacement. First, the respondents were more likely to efface themselves to those communication targets who favor the modesty norm, and to those who deny the respondents' self-effacement. Second, the respondents preferred not to self-efface when NEITHER of them favored the modesty norm. Finally, we discuss the importance of using dyadic interaction to study communication norms.

Nowak & Latane (1994) conducted computer simulation of adaptive agent bound to network structure and found "consolidation" and "clustering". They claimed minority could remain in the system by clustering. They ignored, however, people living in modern society have global information about the system they live in. What will be changed, or not changed, when all agents in Latane et al.'s simulation have global information about the system and adapt to it? Our study examined this point by adding the "fifth agent" as the "generalized other", which represented global information about the ratio of minority and majority, to Latane et al.'s simulation. We found clustering appear only when the majority initially dominated the system in number. And we also found that the system stay chaotic under the condition that minority initially occupied considerable area of the system. These findings imply that homogeneous global information promotes not homogeneous but heterogeneous society.

Many uses and gratification studies in the mass communication research revealed that people select TV programs to meet their own needs, regardless of the senders' intention. Most of the studies, however, neglect the impact of others, which was found important in the studies of campaign effect. This study intends to examine the impact of others in terms of interpersonal environment (Ikeda, 1994, 1997) and to reconsider Komori and Ikeda (1996)'s findings. The hypothesis was: the more the number of the frequently-contact-others who watch a certain genre of TV program, the higher the tendency that the main respondent would watch the same genre of TV programs. Conducting a snowball sampling survey at one ward in Tokyo, and analyzing the data, the hypothesis was confirmed with at least three genres, dramas, sports, and "wideshow"s, which are mainly composed of gossips about stars. This implies people's selection of TV programs can be explained in terms of interpersonal factors.

A large number of gender studies have pointed out that demographic variables explain people's attitudes and behavior regarding gender roles. There seem to exist, however, social psychological factors which are strong determinants on gender related phenomena. Ikeda (1994) pointed out that interpersonal environment affects individuals' attitudes and behavior. Similarly, Huckfeldt (1986) claimed the existence of a positive effect on individuals' attitudes and behavior that result from casual and impersonal communication with others. These studies implied the importance of individuals' frequently-contact-others as a determinant of the individuals' attitudes and behavior. Present study applied their models to gender studies. The hypotheses were as follows: Perceived distribution of the opinion among the respondents' frequently-contact-others regarding gender role would 1) positively correlate with the respondents' attitudes toward gender roles and 2) positively correlate with the perceived distribution of the opinion regarding gender roles in the society. Using an 800 random sampled survey at Bunkyo ward in Tokyo, the hypotheses were confirmed. These correlation remained significant even when some demographic variables were controlled.

In recent decades, social and psychological researchers have discussed whether various social and technical changes, such as the spread of ICT use and changes in family structure, are changing interpersonal relationships. Findings based on empirical data are accumulating in Europe and the United States. In Japan, however, there is little data available to compare contemporary interpersonal relationships with the past, and the available data sets also have several flaws. When compared to Europe and the United States, Japanese researchers suffer the lack of open data to make the comparison. To breakthrough this situation, in early 2022, we conducted a replicated survey of the National Personal Network Survey, which was conducted in early 2005. With this dataset open to all researchers, this research project has developed a foundation for comparing Japanese interpersonal relationships before and after the spread of SNS and smartphones.

It is widely believed that social relationships of Japanese people have changed during past several decades. Some journalistic and academic reports claim that Japanese people have become to be isolated. However we cannot empirically examine these claims because we have few empirical data to do so.
In 2014, we re-conducted "Survey of attitudes toward urban life and family" which is originally conducted in 1993. Merging the two data, we examine changes in Japanese people's social relationships. The findings are as follows. 1)Japanese married people have the fewer intimate alters (neighbors, colleagues, and relatives) in their neighborhood. 2)Attitudes toward family issues slightly changed. 3)Changes are small and Japanese married people have the same amount of social support resources as the people of 20 years ago.

The purpose of this research project is to clarify the role of external volunteers to recover the relationships of local residents and the main factors to recover the resident's sense in disaster area.
The Great East Japan Earthquake is considered as a wide area disaster. It needed a support not only from the South but also from the North. The Hirosaki city which our University is standing is located in the north of the stricken area. Universities have students and special knowledges. During our volunteer activities, we have heard lot of voices of the local survivors. They wanted to record the old memories. They were willing to know more about others' states and really wanted to be delivered their voices to the local government. Because of this, we did a research process to support volunteers' activity. The research is including life history interview, the survey of resident's sentiment, current situation, and the discovery of the regional resources and advantages.

Japanese youths born in rural areas tend to be forced to move out to urban areas because opportunities of education and employment are disproportionally distributed to urban areas. In the present study, we researched personal networks of Japanese youths who were born in Tohoku area and moved to Syutoken area. The results revealed that the respondents born in Tohoku are and moved to Syutoken area maintain their personal network formed in their homeland after long-distanced movement.
