With the dramatic improvements in the accuracy as well as fluency of Machine Translation (MT),
teachers and instructors in foreign language education have started discussing how to deal with MT
in their classrooms. To the best of our knowledge, no research has extensively investigated the status
quo of the use of MT in English language education in Japan. Therefore, our JAITS special interest
project conducted a survey targeting English language teachers in universities, high schools and
junior high schools. The questionnaire consisted of a wide range of questions, including language
teachers’ attitude toward the application of MT in English teaching, teachers’ subjective evaluations
on MT translation quality and learners’ performance, and emerging ethical issues concerning MT.
Over 130 responses were collected. This report presents the responses from university instructors who
teach general education English (N=60).

The author of this study used the design of a 2014 experiment that investigated college students’ post-editing potential. The raw Google statistical machine translation (SMT) used in the 2014 experiment was replaced with the raw Google neural machine translation (NMT) of the same source text. A comparison of the results of the two studies yielded the following observations: 1) A quantitative evaluation of post-editing (PE) showed no significant difference in cognitive effort between the studies, but a significant difference in the amount of editing was observed. Overall, NMT+PE is better than SMT+PE in terms of its final product, which contains fewer errors; however, NMT+PE does not empower college students to meet professional standards of translation quality. 2) Students exhibit a poorer error correction rate in the NMT+PE condition despite similar perceived cognitive effort, which is possibly related to NMT producing human-like errors that make it more difficult for students to post-edit. 3) NMT+PE requires almost the same competence as translating a text ‘from scratch’ or editing human translation. Therefore, translation training is necessary for students to be able to shift their attention to the right problems (such as mistranslation) and be effective post-editors. The results of this study suggest that the more advanced, human-like translation abilities of NMT make it even more challenging for student translators to meet a professional standard of post-editing quality.

Despite the pressure to reduce costs in the advent of machine translation plus post-editing (PE), many professional translators are reluctant to accept PE jobs, which are perceived as requiring less skill and yielding poorer quality products than human translation (HT). This trend in turn raises an issue in the industry, namely, a lack of post-editors. To meet the growing demand for PE, new populations—such as college language learners—should be assessed as potential post-editor candidates. This paper investigates this possibility through an experiment focusing on college language learners’ PE qualifications and resultant performance. Data collected on perceived ease of task, editing quantity, and quality of final product were correlated with the students’ course grades. The investigation found that over 74 % of students felt PE to be an easier task than HT, whereas 26 % did not. Those students who did not find PE easier were determined to be unqualified post-editors. Students who received poor grades in a traditional translation course were also confirmed to be unqualified, though A-students were not always qualified post-editors. The variable performance among A-students may be understood in terms of different approaches to PE, characterized as utilizing either analytic or integrated processing. An analysis using this framework tentatively concludes that A-students who apply an analytic approach, more typical of novice translators, may perform better as post-editors than those who take an integrated approach.
