The Google Innovators Academy (formerly the GTA) is a free professional development experience designed to help educators from around the globe get the most from innovative technologies. Approximately 50 innovative educators from around the world are selected to attend each GTA based on the merits of their online application. Applicants include classroom teachers, curriculum specialists, technology advocates, librarians, administrators, professional trainers, and other education professionals who actively serve the world's primary and secondary teachers and students. Participants are selected based on their professional experience, their passion for teaching and learning, and their successful use of technology in school settings. We are particularly interested in educators who actively provide mentoring or training for other teachers. The GTA is designed to create a strong professional community of educators who support each other over the course of a year.

      More details

Award type:Award from publisher, newspaper, foundation, etc.

Apple Distinguished Educators (ADEs) are part of a global community of education leaders recognized for doing amazing things with Apple technology in and out of the classroom. They explore new ideas, seek new paths, and embrace new opportunities. That includes working with each other — and with Apple — to bring the freshest, most innovative ideas to students everywhere. ADEs advise Apple on integrating technology into learning environments — and share their expertise with other educators and policy makers. They author original content about their work. They advocate the use of Apple products that help engage students in new ways. And they are ambassadors of innovation, participating in and presenting at education events around the world. Being part of the ADE community is much more than an honor — it’s an opportunity to make a difference. There are now more than 2,000 ADEs worldwide, from the United States to China, New Zealand to Turkey. And they gather every year at ADE Institutes and education events around the world as well as online in the ADE community to collaborate on solutions to the global education challenges of today and tomorrow.

This paper provides an overview of a variety of digital age pedagogies for the modern teacher. Furthermore it is an action research oriented paper as it argues for the widespread utilisation of these approaches. First of all a description of the various pedagogies is given and then a justification for their incorporation into existing teaching styles is outlined. Next a set of suggestions for how teachers can actually implement and fine-tune these approaches into their teaching is provided. This paper draws on my experiences using these pedagogies as well as the
experiences and feedback of students learning via these approaches in ICU’s Academic Reading and Writing, Advanced English Presentations, Research Writing, and other classes over the past 7 years. This papers therefore aims to
highlight the ways in which current best practices in digital pedagogy could influence the adoption of these pedagogies more generally at ICU in the future.

This is a report on an early experiment with iPad 2’s in a university setting. In this action research project, 19 students in an Academic Reading and Writing class for
those with high-level English were given iPad 2’s for five weeks for their own personal use. As ICU has campus-wide Wi-Fi, this effectively made every classroom a type of computer room, whereas actual computer rooms were in such short supply and high demand that other classes were limited to one session per week in a computer room, even when the classes met five times a week. These
iPad equipped students were also doing multimedia project work in addition to their normal class tasks. This study aimed to find out their reactions to the iPad experience in their academic and multimedia work in the hope that the results would influence the adoption of multimedia tablets like iPads at ICU in the future.

Stewart & N. Sonda (Eds.) JALT2011: Teaching, Learning, Growing
Abstract: The paper attempts to articulate a novel approach to English language teaching in which language reproduction itself is not the ultimate goal of instruction, but rather the ultimate transformation of the learner
in the pursuit of understanding what it means to be human. This goal has long been a feature of liberal arts education, and the authors believe that it should not be limited to students in liberal arts colleges in the West but can form the basis for a dynamic approach to language teaching at the university level. The authors observe that East Asia is an attractive venue for challenging and enriching students with the values and educational goals of the liberal arts through the teaching of English as a foreign language, and they illustrate some of the pedagogical implications of an English for Liberal Arts approach they advocate in several common course types and traditional skill areas.

Today, in an age of globalization, religion represents a potent force in the lives of billions of people worldwide. Yet when social theorists examine the impact of globalization on contemporary religious movements, they tend to focus on issues such as Islamic fundamentalism and threats to US or global security. This collection of essays takes a different approach, analyzing – with special reference to Asia – religion through lived experience. The key issues covered in the volume include: how religious impulses contribute to globalization; how religious groups and organizations repackage traditional beliefs for transcultural appeal; how religious adherents cope with external threats to identity; how new technologies are reshaping the nature of religious beliefs and images; and how local and global religious influences blend and/or clash. Far from religion being a subject of peripheral concern to globalization, the contributors demonstrate that from the most basic level of our interactions with the natural environment to the socio-political behavior of the “great religions” – and even to the profusion of folk and pop culture phenomena – the influence of religion upon globalization, and vice versa, is apparent at all levels.

Abstract: Since coming to power Venezuela’s President Hugo Chavez has been a charismatic and polarising figure. To many of the rich and those on the political right that champion the IMF as the saviour of the poor he is seen as a dangerous and destabilizing factor in Globalisation’s mission to raise the poor out of poverty. These feelings have now been exacerbated as he has set up the Bank of the South in opposition to the IMF in Latin America, as the IMF has traditionally been the biggest lender to the region. However to many of the poor and those and on the political left he is seen as a visionary people’s champion against the ravages of Globalisation, as they argue his policies have greatly benefited Venezuela’s poor and the poor of the Latin American region in general especially now that the Bank of the South is poised to continue those policies region wide. These people argue that the biggest beneficiaries of the IMF policies in the past were the rich and the MNC’s that operated in the region, whereas they argue that the Bank of the South’s policies will actually benefit the borrowers and by extension the poor. Also as an oil rich nation Venezuela has the money to lend, as its oil finances were boosted by the effects of the US / UK invasion of Iraq on world oil prices. The recent fall in oil prices will therefore need to be examined to see to what extent this will affect Chavez’s plans and therefore the long term economic future of the region in terms of development loans from Venezuela and the Bank of the South. This paper will example all these issues in detail by paying particular attention to the relevant background history as this is necessary to understand the motives of the various actors in the present as well as trying to understand what the ramifications for the future may be.

I was asked by Academia.edu to make a set of short videos on how academics can improve their presentation skills. The course explains how to improve the chances of getting a presentation proposal accepted by improving presentation abstracts, professional bio statements, and online profiles. It then explains how to properly and professionally prepare for the presentation by covering audience analysis, room / cable / equipment set up. Next, the course gives some ideas on how to appropriately structure information for maximising audience memory retention. And finally it gives tips on how to practice the presentation properly to ensure it all goes smoothly on the day.

Populism in a Post-truth World: A Multidisciplinary Conference
(in association with Kyoto Sangyo University’s Institute for World Affairs)
The unexpected rise to power of President Donald Trump in the US, and the UK referendum resulting in Brexit, highlighted 2016 as a year of populism and post-truth. Both campaigns were driven by appeals to emotion, not reason, and were characterized by the widespread use of non-truths. The winners were appealing to those frustrated with regular politics, and those hit by the negative impacts of globalization. While populism and post-truth are neither new nor limited to our two examples, do these results therefore signal a greater crisis within the two key architects of the global system? What will be the impacts on the economic order that has been in place since WWII? Will brakes be applied to the various processes of globalization that have continued virtually unabated for more than 50 years? How are international and domestic institutions responding to the post-truth world that may threaten their legitimacy and even existence? What does the seeming rise in populism and post-truth say about civil society and its crucial role in democracy? While it may be that the shift towards populism could be interpreted as a domestic shift in power from elites to citizens, should we also understand it in terms of the ongoing global shift in power from the West to the rest?

It has long been recognized that education is a key to success. This is accepted by both individuals who want to improve their income potential, and by governments that want to develop their national economies. In this way, education has the power to transform lives for the better. However, what is education in the 21st century? Obviously, in its simplest sense, education is about acquiring skills and building knowledge. The key questions therefore are what skills are necessary, what knowledge is important, and who is best placed to decide such things? Education is a human right, and access to inclusive and quality education is a Sustainable Development Goal. However, achieving this is no small task, and societies face considerable challenges. Are there any particular challenges the different societies of Asia are facing in terms of education? Are these challenges specific to different cultures and/or to different levels of socio-economic development?

In recent years precarity has come to characterize life and work for growing segments of the world's population. In the developed world, a growing reliance on part-time and contract workers, the adoption of labor saving techniques, the outsourcing of manufacturing and service jobs abroad, and a fraying safety net have lowered living standards and given rise to higher levels of stress and anxiety. In the Global South, low wages, unemployment and underemployment, competition for land and resources, and environmental degradation threaten the livelihoods and wellbeing of broad swathes of humanity. Despite signs that the world economy is emerging from recession, individuals and communities across the globe remain consigned to life on "Uneasy Street," unable to secure stable employment or a living wage, access adequate healthcare, education, or social assistance, or realize their aspirations and innate potential. How do the situations of populations under economic strain in different regions of the world compare or relate? What are the implications for individuals, communities, nations, and the world at large of increased precarity? How do vulnerable groups cope in the face of economic instability and uncertainty? What can be done to create a less precarious and more human-centricworld?

As transnational and cross-cultural exchanges become increasingly commonplace in our rapidly shrinking world, conflicts over values and beliefs are bound to arise, despite efforts to the contrary. Issues and crises in individual nations meanwhile can have implications that traverse borders and even span the entire globe. Labor exploitation by multinational corporations, human trafficking, wars, famines, environmental degradation, racial discrimination, and other pressing concerns subsequently require not only local but also global responses. In such a global context, what ethical values should inform regulatory frameworks, decision-making processes, political/economic/humanitarian interventions, and general interactions? What responsibilities and rights can we speak of in our globalizing world, if any? Is a global ethic possible or needed in a world of diversity? These and other questions will be explored at the 9th international conference of the Asia Association for Global Studies (AAGS) on March 22-23, 2014 at Shantou University.

The Asia Association for Global Studies (AAGS), a Japan-based professional organization for international scholars and educators interested in interdiscipinary perspectives on issues of global significance, is pleased to announce the date, place and theme of its 2013 international conference. For the first time the conference will be held at the First Hotel on Petchaburi Road in Bangkok, Thailand on March 23-24, 2013. Since the 20th century crucial changes have taken place in the world that have profoundly affected society and the progress of humanity. As such, it is appropriate that this year's theme is On the Move: People, Protests and Progress. At this conference of international scholars, activists, policymakers, and humanitarian workers, the focus will be on how people have responded to the opportunities available to them to protest and attempt to make progress in the contemporary world. The organizing committee invites paper proposals within the following streams, though others will also be considered: Protest Movements, Evolution of Protest Strategies, State Reactions to Protests, Human Migration, Capitalism, Social Movements, Historical Perspectives, and Philosophical Issues.

The Asia Association for Global Studies (AAGS), a Japan-based professional organization for international scholars and educators interested in interdiscipinary perspectives on issues of global significance, is pleased to announce the theme, date and place of its 2012 international conference. Given the earthquake, tsunami and nuclear related disasters affecting Japan since March of 2011, the continued global economic crisis, and ongoing political conflicts in the Middle East, it was decided that this year's theme would be Humanity and Humanitarianism in Crisis. At this conference of international scholars, activists, policymakers, and humanitarian workers, the focus will be on how human beings are affected by and respond to cataclysmic events and the implications of major crises for humanity. Papers that address whether governmental and non-governmental responses have been sufficient for the challenges presented thus far to specific populations and humanity, those that examine how well societies are prepared for future threats, and those that look at what has been learned from past crises and disasters will be most welcome. The conference on this occasion will be hosted by International Christian University in Tokyo, Japan.

On behalf of Peace as a Global Language this year’s PGL Conference Committee invite academics, activists and other concerned individuals to submit proposals for panel paper presentations, individual paper presentations and workshops for sessions to be arranged by the Committee. The Conference will be held at International Christian University in Mitaka, Tokyo. This year the focus is less on language (although such papers will still be considered) and more on the actual concepts involved in Peace and peace promotion. Therefore the Committee seeks sessions and panelists that will educate, engage and enlighten audiences on the broad themes of peace and how to achieve it, the descriptive and normative role of academia, the media and society in war and peace and the exploration of the ways in which they could do more to promote peace as well as the causes of war. Below is a partial list of themes and their effects on peace and war, and these are the kind of subjects the conference hopes to cover. Proposals that deal with these themes in this respect have a higher chance of being accepted. Also if you feel some topics have been missed from this list send us an email with a good well reasoned argument for its inclusion and we'll add it below if convinced it fits with the overall themes. We already were contacted and convinced we had overlooked Race, added it, and we then had one man email us a good rationale for the inclusion of Gender and this has now also been added.

      Themes

Corporatisation of Academia - involvement of academics in corporate / military research
Military Industrial Complex - relationship with Academia
Corporate Media - cheerleaders for war
      Media Literacy
      Propaganda
Role of Alternative / Independent Media

      Human Rights
