Properties such as lifetimes and masses of neutron-rich nuclei are key parameters for elucidating the astrophysical rapid neutron capture process (r-process). Due to the lack of experimental nuclear data in the relevant extremely neutron-rich region, especially near and above N = 126, the predictions of theoretical nuclear models are crucial for simulating r-process nucleosynthesis. Experimental studies of the properties and structures of neutron-rich nuclei from near the β stability line up to the r-process path provide important inputs to these theoretical models, improving the accuracy of predictions for the nuclear properties involved in the rprocess. We are developing the KEK Isotope Separation System (KISS) at the RIKEN RIBF facility to produce and separate these nuclei to perform spectroscopy experiments. The nuclei of interest are produced by multinucleon transfer reactions, which have been recently attracting renewed interest as they provide a way to access neutron-rich nuclei that are difficult to produce by other methods such as complete fusion or fragmentation. We have performed nuclear and laser spectroscopy, lifetime and mass measurements of neutron-rich nuclei of refractory elements near the N = 126 region using 198,natPt, natTa, natW, and natIr targets irradiated with 136Xe beams. We also extend our spectroscopic studies into the neutron-rich actinide region using 238U beams. This paper introduces the KISS facility and provides an overview of the nuclear spectroscopy experiments carried out there. We also introduce the KISS-1.5 project, which was started in FY2024 to further extend the research into the neutron-rich region.

    Abstract

Previously, we developed an α-TOF detector for correlated measurements of atomic masses and decay properties of radioactive isotopes using a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrograph, and successfully demonstrated α-decay-correlated mass measurements of heavy and superheavy nuclides. In this work, we develop a β-TOF detector, an improvement upon the α-TOF detector, to extend this technology to β-decaying nuclides. Online commissioning with 81Ga yielded a measured half-life of 1.44(31) s, in agreement with the previous literature, and confirmed the efficiency of detecting a decay-correlated event to be consistent with the solid angle limitation.

Structure of the neutron-rich N=86 isotope 140Xe, located northeast of a doubly-magic nucleus 132Sn, is investigated by β-γ spectroscopy. Two β-decay isomers in I140 are newly found in the study of two different β decays of I140 which were produced by two reactions (i) direct in-flight fission at a primary target and (ii) β decay of Te140 at an active stopper. Half-lives of the β decays of the ground state, the low-spin isomer, and the high-spin isomer are determined to be 0.38(2), 0.91(5), and 0.47(4) s, respectively. Decay schemes of the β decay of the high-spin isomer and of the mixed β decays of the ground state and the low-spin isomer in I140 to Xe140 are constructed using the information on γ-ray coincidence relation and γ-ray intensity. Nuclear structures of the low-lying states in Xe140 and I140 are discussed by comparing the experimental results to two theoretical calculations based on a large-scale shell model and the deformed Skyrme Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus deformed quasiparticle-random-phase approximation. Possible candidates for (quasi-)γ-band members of 2+ and 4+ states and the octupole collective 1-state are proposed in Xe140. Increase of quadrupole, triaxial, and octupole collectivities is discussed with the increase of neutron and proton numbers.

In applied forms of time-of-flight mass spectrometry utilizing ion storage devices prior to an analysis device, a non instantaneous electric ejection pulse applied in the region of ion storage is used to accelerate ions into the time-of-flight analyzer. The calculated mass value of the ions from the time-of flight is dependent on the duration of the field transition up to full strength. For novel applications dedicated to precision measurements, such as multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometry of short-lived isotopes, the goal is to continuously decrease the measurement uncertainty while providing a mass accuracy on the same order. Even though dynamic-field models for time-of-flight mass spectrometry have been considered in the past for technological advances, it is important to study the accuracy of the measured mass in this context. Using a simplified linear model for the field transition, we provide a basic investigation of the scenario, and discuss the deviation from the classical "mass-overcharge" dependency of the ions' time-of-flight, which becomes violated. The emerging mass discrepancy depends on the distance between the mass of the ion used for calibration and that of the ion of interest and, in extreme cases, can increase to about one percent for systems with short times-of-flight. However, for typical conditions in single-reference multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometry, mass deviations caused by this effect typically remain below the 1 ppm level. If a mass calibration using two or more ion species is possible during the measurement, the effect becomes negligible for appropriate choices of reference masses. (c) 2020 Published by Elsevier B.V.

    Abstract

An in-flight separator performs the important role of separating a single specific radioactive isotope (RI) beam from the thousands of RI beams produced by in-flight fission as well as projectile fragmentation. However, when looking at ``separation'' from a different viewpoint, more than 99% of simultaneously produced RI beams are just eliminated in the focal plane slits or elsewhere in the separator. In order to enhance the effective usability of the RIKEN in-flight separator BigRIPS, we have been developing an innovative method: parasitic laser ion source (PALIS), which implements parasitic low-energy RI beam production by saving eliminated RI beams during BigRIPS experiments. In this paper, we present the expected benefits and feasibility for the PALIS concept and the results of the first stopping examination for high-energy RI beams in the gas cell.
