My work is situated at the intersection of political sociology and applied ethics, where I aim to conceptualize and actualize more beneficial relationships between technology and human society. The central theme of my research explores how science and technology can be leveraged to empower individuals as active agents in solving the challenges facing contemporary society.
A primary focus of my work is Human Enhancement (HE), the use of technology to augment human capabilities. My research is distinct in its approach to reframe HE not merely as a tool for individual advancement, but as a methodology for enabling people to act for social justice and contribute to a better world. Drawing on the discourse of techno-progressives, I investigate the potential and ethical challenges of using technology to elicit and supplement human virtues in domains such as education and moral development.
This perspective consistently informs my broader research, including inquiries into the dual nature of data-driven societies and the politics of emotion engendered by social media. At its core, my work pursues a fundamental question: Rather than being governed by technology, can we redesign it as a "technology for living well" (yoku ikiru gijutsu), one that enriches human values and helps realize a more desirable society? I address this question through a dual approach that integrates both theoretical inquiry and practical application.
My theoretical work is grounded in extensive practical experience, including numerous real-world projects with private think tanks and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), focusing on areas such as tourism promotion and the resolution of cross-cultural conflicts. I aim to contribute to sustainable social and economic development by synthesizing the stakeholder management and conflict resolution skills honed in the field with the conceptual frameworks developed through my academic research.
