Entrance exams in Greater China are extremely competitive and consequential. This research examined mnemonic elements and memory techniques used in Taiwan to prepare for exams and other university entrance requirements. Moreover, this research differentiated strategies and emphases used in Taiwan from other Chinese cultural spheres. I was able to note curricular changes in emphasis in Taiwan (e.g. from only studying Chinese history to studying the history of Taiwan, China and the world). I collected textbooks and conducted interviews on two research trips. I was able to meet academic contacts in Taipei and in Hualien. I met with students, teachers, tutors, and parents of both Han and Taiwanese Indigenous background. I was able to present my research at international conferences, to cultivate networks for future research, and to get data that I am currently analyzing and writing for publication.
