We clarified the following three points about the success factors in crowdfunding by analyzing the data of the Japanese reward-based crowdfunding platform “CAMPFIRE” and comparing it with the research of U.S. “Kickstarter.” Firstly, it was confirmed that the increase of target amount and duration were negatively associated with the success rate, and the increase of publicity was positively associated. Secondly, it cannot be said that videos were positively associated with the success rate in Japan, which is in contrast to the existing empirical research about U.S. Thirdly, projects by founders in greater Tokyo area have a high success rate in Japan. These results will contribute to the understandings of the development process of crowdfunding in Japan.

The Japanese Reward-based crowdfunding market expanded significantly with the COVID-19 pandemic. This market expansion may have changed the behavioral tendencies of funders. This study empirically analyzed changes in project success factors associated with changes in the funder by statistical causal inference using data from the Japanese crowdfunding platform, propensity score matching, and logistic regression models. The results suggest that there are project success factors that are not affected by changes in funders due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, the changing effect of pricing as a project success factor suggests the possibility of the popularization of funders. Furthermore, the results indicated that the trend of change differed by project category.

We clarified the following two points about model and contents, as project design, in crowdfunding by analyzing the data of the Japanese crowdfunding platform. Firstly, it is confirmed that projects of “All or Nothing" model were significantly more successful than projects of “All in" model. Secondly, it is confirmed that use of videos and pictures and text length were positively associated with success rate. It was suggested that there is the possibility that success factors in Japanese crowdfunding is changing because, according to the existing research, it cannot be said that these factors were positively associated with success rate.

We clarified the following two points about the success factors in Japanese crowdfunding by analyzing the data of the Japanese crowdfunding platform and comparing it with the research in the U.S. Firstly, as common points between Japan and the U.S., it is confirmed that the increase of target amount and duration were negatively associated with success rate, and the increase of publicity were positively associated. It is suggested that similar tendencies may exist in regions other than Japan and the U.S. Secondly, as differences between Japan and the U.S., it cannot be said that videos were positively associated in Japan despite existing research that videos were positively associated in U.S. It was suggested that utilizing videos is necessary in Japan.
