With English being a compulsory subject from the third year of elementary school in Japan, long-term L2 learning motivation has become increasingly important. As such, it is necessary to ascertain the attitudes of learners towards studying English and its future use. The participants in this quantitative study were 265 Year 9 public Japanese junior high students. A questionnaire featuring 18 Likert-scale questions gauged student opinions regarding the strength of their ideal and ought-to L2 selves, and the value of communicative and grammar translation approaches. Results indicated that students had stronger ideal L2 selves than ought-to selves and were positive towards the communicative approach more so than grammar translation. However, their possible L2 selves were weak, and the participants were unable to distinguish the pedagogical approaches as two separate constructs. Recommendations have been included as to how best to encourage the creation and development of L2 possible selves to support long-term student motivation.

The Global and Innovation Gateway for All (GIGA) School Program, an initiative by the Japanese government to provide each student in compulsory education with a computing device, was implemented in March 2021. This case study followed two junior high school English teachers for their first year of using the devices. The aim was to discover, through a series of semi-structured interviews, how the devices were integrated into the classroom as well as the participants’ beliefs regarding the pedagogical benefits of the technology. Through trial and error, both teachers found applications that suited their pedagogical style, and made extensive use of the technology over the course of the year; one participant utilized the devices to enhance a teacher-centered approach and the other to facilitate a student-centered one. With device programs becoming prevalent around the world, such case studies can contribute to the ongoing collective learning experience.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of the GIGA School Program, a policy to provide one computer or tablet to each student in compulsory education (MEXT, 2020), was brought forward from its original 2023 deadline to March 2021. This accelerated implementation has led to concerns as to the readiness of in-service teachers to integrate one-to-one device usage into their pedagogy. In order to examine these concerns, a mixed methods study was conducted using a questionnaire and interviews to determine the attitudes of eight Japanese public junior high school English teachers towards the incorporation of the technology in their classes, and their preconceptions regarding the usefulness and ease of use of the devices. The results indicate that teachers believe the technology could prove beneficial for their teaching but have yet to receive sufficient training in how to effectively utilize it. https://doi.org/10.37546/JALTTLT47.1-1
