    Researchers have been focusing on perceptual characteristics of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in terms of sensory hyperreactivity. Previously, we demonstrated that temporal resolution, which is the accuracy to differentiate the order of two successive vibrotactile stimuli, is associated with the severity of sensory hyperreactivity. We currently examined whether an increase in the perceptual intensity of a tactile stimulus, despite its short duration, is derived from high temporal resolution and high frequency of sensory temporal summation. Twenty ASD and 22 typically developing (TD) participants conducted two psychophysical experimental tasks to evaluate detectable duration of vibrotactile stimulus with same amplitude and to evaluate temporal resolution. The sensory hyperreactivity was estimated using self-reported questionnaire. There was no relationship between the temporal resolution and the duration of detectable stimuli in both groups. However, the ASD group showed severe sensory hyperreactivity in daily life than TD group, and the ASD participants with severe sensory hyperreactivity tended to have high temporal resolution, not high sensitivity of detectable duration. Contrary to the hypothesis, there might be different processing between temporal resolution and sensitivity for stimulus detection. We suggested that the atypical temporal processing would affect to sensory reactivity in ASD.

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by atypical social communication and restricted and repetitive behaviors; such traits are continuously distributed across nonclinical and clinical populations. Recently, relationships between ASD traits and low-level multisensory processing have been investigated, because atypical sensory reactivity has been regarded as a diagnostic criterion of ASD. Studies regarding an audiovisual illusion (the double-flash illusion) reported that social communication difficulties are related to temporal aspects of audiovisual integration. This study investigated whether similar relationships exist in another audiovisual illusion (the stream–bounce effect). In this illusion, two visual objects move toward each other, coincide, and pass each other, and the presentation of a transient sound at their coincidence induces a dominant perception that they bounce away from each other. Typically developing adults were recruited to perform experimental trials involving the stream–bounce effect. We measured their ASD traits using the Autism-Spectrum Quotient. The total quotient score was not related to any behavioral measurements of the effect. In contrast, for participants with higher difficulty in communication, the greatest magnitude of the stream–bounce effect occurred when the presentation timing of the sound tended to follow the visual coincidence. Participants with higher difficulty in imagination also showed the greatest magnitude of the effect when the presentation timing of the sound preceded that of the visual coincidence. Our findings regarding the stream–bounce effect, along with previous findings regarding the double-flash illusion, suggest that atypical temporal audiovisual integration is uniquely related to ASD sub-traits, especially in social communication.

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by symptoms such as social deficits and restricted interests and behavior. Several studies have investigated specific sensory processing in relation to ASD traits. However, findings appear to be inconsistent and inconclusive because of variation in ASD traits among participants and differences in the tasks adopted. In this study, we investigated relationships between sensory thresholds in visual, auditory, and tactile modalities and various ASD traits to account for individual variability of traits in typically developing adults using the same experimental tasks. We estimated detection and discrimination thresholds for brightness, sound pressure, and vibrotactile stimulus strength. We also estimated the degree of ASD traits in each participant with a questionnaire. We found that higher tactile detection and visual discrimination thresholds were related to ASD traits in difficulty of communication. A lower tactile discrimination threshold and higher visual detection threshold was also related to the ASD trait of strong focus of attention. These findings suggest the existence of unique relationships between particular low-level sensory processing and specific ASD traits, indicating that irregularities in sensory processing may underlie variation in ASD traits.

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) includes characteristics such as social and behavioral deficits that are considered common across the general population rather than unique to people with the diagnosis. People with ASD are reported to have sensory irregularities, including crossmodal perception. Crossmodal correspondences are phenomena in which arbitrary crossmodal inputs affect behavioral performance. Crossmodal correspondences are considered to be established through associative learning, but the learning cues are considered to differ across the types of correspondences. In order to investigate whether and how ASD traits affect crossmodal associative learning, this study examined the relationships between the magnitude of crossmodal correspondences and the degree of ASD traits among non-diagnosed adults. We found that, among three types of crossmodal correspondences (brightness–loudness, visual size–pitch, and visual location–pitch pairs), the brightness–loudness pair was related with total ASD traits and a subtrait (social skill). The magnitude of newly learned crossmodal associations (the visual apparent motion direction–pitch pair) also showed a relationship with an ASD subtrait (attention switching). These findings demonstrate that there are unique relationships between crossmodal associations and ASD traits, indicating that each ASD trait is differently involved in sensory associative learning.

    Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in social communication and interaction, and restricted interests and behavior patterns. These characteristics are considered as a continuous distribution in the general population. People with ASD show atypical temporal processing in multisensory integration. Regarding the flash–beep illusion, which refers to how a single flash can be illusorily perceived as multiple flashes when multiple auditory beeps are concurrently presented, some studies reported that people with ASD have a wider temporal binding window and greater integration than typically developed people; others found the opposite or inconsistent tendencies. Here, we investigated the relationships between the manner of the flash–beep illusion and the various dimensions of ASD traits by estimating the degree of typically developed participants’ ASD traits including five subscales using the Autism-Spectrum Quotient. We found that stronger ASD traits of communication and social skill were associated with a wider and narrower temporal binding window respectively. These results suggest that specific ASD traits are differently involved in the particular temporal binding processes of audiovisual integration.

    Most individuals with autism-spectrum disorders have hypersensitivity/hyposensitivity to various types of sensory stimuli. Although several hypotheses such as higher sensitivity to stimuli, alterations in brain structure and function, and dysfunction of inhibitory systems at the molecular level have been suggested, there is no convincing evidence. We found that individuals with high temporal resolution tended to have strong hypersensitivity to sensory stimuli and vice versa. In addition, we focused on a case with extraordinarily high temporal resolution across the tactile, auditory, and audio-tactile domains. We believe that studying such an extreme case of temporal processing could facilitate an understanding of the neural basis of time perception.

    The people with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) show various tendencies like difficulty in social interactions and restricted interests and behavior, and atypical audiovisual interaction. Non-diagnosed people are also reported having variable ASD traits. However, it has been not fully investigated the particular relationships between ASD traits and audiovisual interaction. We estimated the degree of ASD traits for non-diagnosed people, and the audiovisual interaction pattern under the stream bounce perception (i.e., a sound enhances bouncing perception when two moving objects overlap). The people with the higher comprehensive ASD traits showed the stronger audiovisual interaction effect. Additionally, the people with the higher ASD traits for the difficulty in social interactions showed the effect even when the sound was presented after the overlap of the visual stimuli. The comprehensive ASD traits and the traits related to social difficulty would have unique effects on the audiovisual interaction under the stream bounce perception.

    People with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are reported to have irregularities for crossmodal perception. Crossmodal correspondences are specific relationships among arbitrary crossmodal sensations (e.g., a brighter stimulus and a louder sound). Crossmodal correspondences are considered to be established by associative learning, but learning cues are assumed to be different among the types of correspondences. This study investigated the relationships between the crossmodal correspondences and the ASD traits. People with lower ASD trait value showed the dominant correspondence effect for the brightness-loudness and visual location-pitch pairs, whose correspondence cue is assumed as neural/perceptual and conceptual/linguistic similarities, respectively. For the visual size-pitch pair which is assumed to be acquired by statistical learning, the stronger ASD trait for detailed attention was related to stronger magnitude of the correspondence. These results suggest the unique relationships between the ASD traits and the crossmodal correspondences or the manner of sensory associative learning.

On the double flash illusion (one flash is perceived as twice by the presentation of two beeps), people with ASD was reported to have wider temporal binding window and greater integration than typically developed (TD) people, others found the opposite or inconsistent tendencies. Here, we focused on the fact that there exist five subcategories of ASD trait, and investigated the relationships between ASD traits and the manner of the double flash illusion by using Autism-Spectrum Quotient for TD people. We found the relationships between stronger ASD trait in communication and wider temporal window, stronger ASD trait in social skill and narrower temporal window, and stronger ASD trait in imagination and weaker magnitude of the illusion. These results suggest that each ASD trait could be uniquely related to the particular temporal binding processes of audiovisual integration.

    事象間の因果関係や連続性を正しく捉え、円滑に外界の状況を理解するためには、事象の時間的な関係性を判断する必要がある。一方で、非同時な視・聴覚刺激であっても繰り返し提示されることで、刺激間の時間差に順応し、同時だと感じる点(主観的同時点)が移動することが知られている。したがって、事象間の時間的な関係性を理解するための情報処理スタイルを刺激に応じて変化させることで、時々刻々と変化する外界において生じる事象の理解がより促進されると考えられる。しかし、そのような時間差への順応は自閉スペクトラム症(ASD)者では起こりにくいことが知られている。このことから、ASD者の適応性の個人差には時間情報処理の動的な変化の生じにくさが関係すると予想した。本研究では、ASD者における順応による知覚的な時間情報処理に関する変動の生じにくさが、経時的な事象間の因果関係の柔軟な理解を阻害する一因となるかを検証することを目的とした。
    令和3年度は言語コミュニケーションにおける時間処理様式として発話速度の知覚に注目した。実験参加者には、提示した音声刺激と擬似的な会話を行ってもらい、音声刺激の速度感と実験参加者自身の話速を測定した。ASD者は定型発達者と比べて話速が遅い傾向があり、また音声刺激の話速に合わせて自身の話速を速く/遅くなるように変化させる度合いが小さい傾向が見られた。これらのことから、ASD者は他者とのやりとり場面で、柔軟に時間処理を変化させづらい可能性があること、またそのことが円滑なコミュニケーションを難しくさせる一因である可能性があることが示唆された。これらの知見は日本発達心理学会第33回大会内、会員企画自主シンポジウムにて発表した。

    本研究では自閉スペクトラム症(ASD)が示す多様な特性を規定する感覚処理特性を明らかにすべく,ASD被診断者を特性の個人差によって分類し,感覚処理特性との関連を検討する。
    令和元年度は平成30年度に引き続き、ASD群を特性の個人差によって分類することを試みた。75名のASD被診断者を対象に、社会性の困難さやこだわり行動といった中核的なASDの症状と感覚応答性の問題について、対人応答性尺度(SRS-2)および感覚プロファイル短縮版(SSP)によって測定し、その得点の組み合わせからサブグループに分類した。その結果、5つのサブグループが作成された。先行研究では中核症状と感覚応答性の問題の重症度が一致することが観察されてきたが、本研究ではそのような重症度の一致するグループだけでなく、中核症状は強く示すにも関わらず感覚応答性の問題は中等度に示すといった重症度の一致しないグループを見出した。この知見は第37回感覚統合学会研究大会にて発表を行った。
    また平成30年度に引き続き、感覚応答性の問題の背景にある感覚処理特性として、時間情報処理との関係性を検討した。我々の研究では刺激の時間順序判断課題から測定された高い時間処理能力が感覚応答性の難しさのうち、過敏性の高さに関係することを報告してきた(Ide, Yaguchi et al., 2018)。本研究では、ギャップ検出課題から測定された時間処理能力についても過敏性の高さとの関係性を再現した。さらに高い時間処理能力から誘発される時間的加重現象に注目し、刺激の主観的強度の上昇と過敏性との関係性を検討したが、有意な関係性は見られなかった。このことから過敏性は刺激の強度に関する感度の高さではなく、刺激間の時間的な関係性の理解に関する特性と関連して生じることが示唆された。この知見はINSAR 2019のほか、2件の国内学会にて発表を行った。
