      <p>The aim of this paper is to examine the possibility of how higher education can develop citizenship education within Japan. For this purpose, we will explore the background and history, the definitions, and the big picture of curricula as well as the goals of Tokai public achievement-style education as citizenship education, and its practices since the program commenced in 2017. Also, we try to identify successful key factors and some future challenges of citizenship education in higher education. As a result, we conclude that Public Achievement is not merely a set of educational methods, but a philosophy that values self-directed learning by individual citizens and encourages their authentic participation in creating a collective learning culture. To facilitate citizenship education further, the university also needs to create a learning culture to value this authentic participation of students, faculty, and staff in operating its organization and surrounding society.</p>

      <p>In this end-piece to the special issue of the <i>Japanese Journal of Environmental Education: Environmental Education in Asia</i>, we review, compare and synthesize the discussions provided in this issue to reach our aim of going beyond merely describing environmental education (EE) in Taiwan, Korea, and Japan, and seek further questions and common issues relevant to the region and possibly the global community. From the first three articles, which overviewed formal EE in each country, three issues emerged for further study: institutionalizing EE in schools, the roles of EE in improving the quality of school education, and marginalization of EE in schools oriented towards college entrance. The next three articles suggested the limited impacts non-formal EE has made on society as a whole in these places and the need to investigate how governmental institutionalization affected the characteristics, contents, and qualities of non-formal EE, to avoid weakening its diversity and autonomy. The next three articles, which overviewed EE research trends, led to the questions: "How can we transform EE practices into EE research?" and "How can we enhance the field of EE as an academic discipline?" The contribution from Aotearoa New Zealand and Australia discussed the importance of understanding EE in relation to biogeography, sociocultural and socioecological history, and proposed collaboration in cross-cultural EE exchanges, "posthumanist" EE development, and EE for Asian migrants in Austrasia. Finally, the last paper invited us to envision futures for EE, raising critical questions in relation to the roles of EE to "invite" people to reflect on values, controversies, and dilemmas, to critically face the "post-truth" era, and to take necessary action. Our next step is to invite more people to join our challenge in reflecting critically on our practices as EE professionals in Asia in relation to the ecological, geographical, social, political, economic, and cultural contexts and finding ways for further development and contributions to global EE collaboration.</p>

      <p>This special issue is the result of a 2-year collaborative project involving environmental education (EE) societies/associations from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, North America, and Australia. The aim of the project was to create a platform to share ideas, practices, and theories of EE in the Asian region, with English as the common language. The discussion was organized around five core themes: 1) Development, current situation, and challenges of EE in formal education; 2) Development, current situation, and challenges of EE in non-formal education; 3) Research trends in EE; 4) Insights for EE in Asia from outside of Asia; 5) Review, comparison, and synthesis of findings to go beyond a presentation of EE in various countries and instead highlight the recurring transversal issues. We hope this special issue will contribute to furthering dialogue among EE scholars and practitioners in Asia, and to building bridges between EE in Asia and other regions.</p>

      In this study, we focused on water quality in an urban canal and the Mekong River in the city of Can Tho, a central municipality of the Mekong Delta region, southern Vietnam. Water temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, BOD5, CODCr, Na+, Cl-, NH4 (+)-N, SO4 (2-)-S, NO3 (-)-N, and NO2 (-)-N for both canal and river, and tide level of the urban canal, were monitored once per month from May 2010 to April 2012. The urban canal is subject to severe anthropogenic contamination, owing to poor sewage treatment. In general, water quality in the canal exhibited strong tidal variation, poorer at lower tides and better at higher tides. Some anomalies were observed, with degraded water quality under some high-tide conditions. These were associated with flow from the upstream residential area. Therefore, it was concluded that water quality in the urban canal changed with a balance between dilution effects and extent of contaminant supply, both driven by tidal fluctuations in the Mekong River.

      The feature of this study is in the concept of “Wetland Education”. By perceiving the various waterfront such as paddy field, river, lakes, marshes, and oceans, as a new area of environmental education, inclusive and total water environment can be captured. As positioning “Wetland Education” as “Education for Sustainable Development”, a new area of environmental education which expands from the living environment to the global environment can be developed from the keyword “water”. This study raises the state of civic education by focusing on the role of “Wetland education” as a frame that corresponds to biodiversity and global warming.

      This research project included development, implementation, and analysis of models of education for sustainability and resilience for universities with both global and local perspectives based on genba (actual sites of issues and practices) experience. Study of cases of education based on students' participation in genba to build a sustainable and resilient society revealed some keys, such as the close university-community interaction to critically address the "realities" of multiple issues including social, economic, and political injustice and ecological destruction, and the empowerment of learners - students, faculty, and local people - to fully participate in creating their own futures.

      This study critically investigated environmental human resource development programs, which have been promoted as ESD in Japanese universities. The study had three focuses. First, it analyzed the possibilities of "GENBA (a site of actions or issues in Japanese) experience" for realizing ESD and issues to be considered for enhancing GENBA-experience-based learning. Second, it clarified the process of "unlearning" students and faculty need to go through to overcome the conflicts between GENBA experience and specialized/ scientific education. Third, it considered a hypothesis that such GENBA-experience-based education can develop resilience of students and communities, and proposed a plan to develop a model of "GENBA-based global education" as ESD in universities for developing resilience.
