      Through a consideration of the connection between gakkoen (school gardens) and reconstruction plans that included small public parks following the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, this paper reveals how gakkoen became a necessary component of Tokyo City elementary education. Previous research determined that a compromise was reached between park management disaster relief provisions and the education demands for the expansion of school grounds. However, it is doubtful that there was sufficient land to meet both demands because there were many obstacles preventing the acquisition of property, such as opposition to voluntary reductions of residential property that reconstruction plans required. This paper reexamines this situation through a consideration of the role of gakkoen as established by the 1905 "Notice Regarding School Gardens" (Gakkoen shisetsu tsucho). This paper shows that securing sufficient property was not possible due to budgetary constraints, resulting in no additional land for schools grounds; even the option of having small public parks available for use by all elementary schools was not possible. In order to make up for the failure to expand school grounds, small public parks were to be used to fulfill the purpose of gakkoen by providing materials and nurturing of in aesthetic sensibilities. In the context of the 1905 Gakkoen shisetsu tsucho, the educational value of gakkoen were recognized in 1910 by the educational associations of Tokyo city, and was also approved by city planning after the earthquake. The establishment open spaces for disaster relief throughsmall city parks also came to serve an educational purpose. While gakkoen in Tokyo were not part of expanded school grounds, their provision was accomplished through small city parks. In conclusion, gakkoen played an important role in the compromise between the city planning and public education.

      This paper clarifies the process by which Gakkoen (school gardens) were established by the 1905 "Notice Regarding School Gardens" (Gakkoenshisetsutsucho) Promulgated by the Offices of General Education and Vocational Education of the Ministry of Education. While gakkoen were established by the "Gakkoenshisetsutsucho," reference books written by Harizuka Chotaro and Tanahashi Gentaro, as well as an abridged translation of an encyclopedia edited by Wilhelm Rein, popularized the idea. Gakkoen were unique among conventional facilities in that they were not only for educational purposes, such as instruction by observation, but also for discipline education through labor and for arousing interest in agricultural education. In order to demonstrate the existence of facilities similar to Gakkoen prior to 1905, this paper examines guidelines and magazines about school management by looking at terminology, institutions, and content. This study reveals that before 1905, terms such as "Gakkoen" were used to introduce foreign of similar programs. Regarding institutions, there were no plans for the establishment of Gakkoen. As for content, there were not only "Teien" (gardens), and "Shokubutsuen" (botanical gardens) for observation, but also "Jitsugyoen" (experiential gardens) established for the promotion of agricultural education. This paper also examines books by Harizuka Chotaro of the Vocational Education Office, Tanahashi Gentaro of Tokyo Higher Normal School, etc., to confirm a transition in early history, terminology, and content of pre-1905 programs and Gakkoen. Gakkoen are clearly different from conventional facilities such as Teien, Shokubutsuen, Jitsujoen, etc. Gakkoen were established with new educational concepts and purposes, such as instruction by observation in general education, discipline education through work, and the arousal of interest in agricultural education.

      This study aims to clarify the actual situation of the development of “Gakkoen” (school gardens) during the Taisho period while focusing on the aspect of the practice of implementing new education. In order to confirm nationwide trends, this study conducted research and analyses of schools’ history and resource materials at elementary schools. And we investigated Gakkoen until now as well as similar facilities. The main result shows that the “Gakushuen” initiative, which was influenced by the Taisho new education program, was confirmed in elementary school attached to Nara Women’s Higher Normal School, and the relationship between such gardens and educational activities that emphasize the independence was clarified. Gakkoen were found to be promoted alongside the development of School forests in Nagano Prefecture, where Gakkoen were implemented in a variety of ways in accordance with different purposes and forms that suited the characteristics of the community and the school.

      Religious Sentiment' is controversial topic since its appearance in 1935. We studied on this historical topic, and 'Religious Belief' was appeared before 'Religious Sentiment' under the impact of psychology and studies on religions in America and Europe, and was also controversial topic on its effect and existence. We studied on this practical topic, and 'Religious Sentiment' is not always told in the textbooks on moral education.
