Nomadic people living in the Altai Mountains （mainly in Xovd province）created various ituals and folklore concerning the snow leopard. In this study, local oral histories, legends, and traditional ecological knowledge （TEK）narratives about snow leopards are defined as sources of cultural heritage created through centuries of unique herder–snow leopard interaction” phenomena, which subjectively encourage locals to protect the snow leopards and the surrounding environment. The fieldwork was carried from July 19 to August 22, 2016, with structured interviews of 117 informants living in Mt. Jargalant, Mt. Bonbut, and Mt. Munkh-Khairkhan. Not only collecting scientific data for wildlife protection but also clarifying the social and cultural contexts surrounding snow leopards will contribute to revitalized, sustainable spaces for snow leopards and local herders to coexist. It will also offer new perspectives on the conservation ecology of rare large carnivores.

<p>There is potentially 600–900 population of snow leopards living in Mongolia. Especially, a plenty of eyewitness, encounter, and livestock predatory has been reported in Khovd and Bayan-Ulgii Province. Such kind of "snow leopard accident" was dramatically increased from 2014. In contrast to this situation, some of retributive illegal killing are still happened against livestock predatory. To create well-being relationship between snow leopard and local nomadic herders, this research mainly focus of actual situation about "snow leopard accident" among the nomadic society. The fieldwork was carried on from 19^th July 2016 ～22^nd August 2016, with structured interview (hysteresis and retroactive research, documentation of oral history) to 117 informants living in vicinity of snow leopard's dwelling at Mt. Jargalant, Mt. Bonbut, and Mt. Munkh-Khairkhan. Herder's attitude for ecological conservation and animal grazing is also key issue to create sustainable co-existence with nomadic herders and snow leopards.</p>

This research reports on the ethnography of the traditional art and knowledge (TAK) and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) fostered by Altaic Kazakh eagle masters, known as burkutchu, in the context of horse-riding falconry in the Bayan-Olgii Province of western Mongolia. From the standpoint of ecological anthropology and ethnoornithology, it especially focuses on (1) the process of the first-stage taming arts of hunting golden eagles, and (2) the feeding frequency and quantity, as well as the appropriate animals used in the eagles'diet. Qualitative research based on long-term, live-in fieldwork was carried out with a falconer family in the Buteu winter pasture of Sagsai County from August 4, 2011, to January 10, 2013 (300 working days in total). In addition, quantitative research, based on structured interviews, was done with 42 eaglet masters in Bayan-Olgii Province over a two-month period from September to October 2014. Three things were discovered in the research. First, participant observation and interviews detected at least nine taming procedure stages (from first contact to hunting excursions), together with getting accustomed to riding horses. The taming procedure differs slightly between eaglets taken straight from the nest (korbara) and young or adult birds that are captured (juz). Second, the research clarified the feeding frequency and quantity for the eagles, the procedure of which differs between summer (the moulting term, or tulyek) and winter (the weight-reduction term, or kaiyru). The average feeding quantity (mean ± S.E.) was calculated at about 1137.5 ± 130.5g in the summer and 541.4 ± 70.8g in the winter. The overall average feeding quantity per year was thus 241.3 ± 18.3kg, or equivalent to 9.6 to 12.0 local sheep or goats. Third, the research specified the appropriate animals used in an eagle's diet according to each eagle master's TAK. The animals were divided into four classes, depending on their appropriation, as follows: (1) rabbits, foxes and sheep; (2) organs, cows and marmots; (3) river fish, horses, dogs and goats, (4) camels, mice and wild birds. Eagle masters prefer using natural prey meat over livestock meat. Consequently, a unique rapport is formed between the eagle master and golden eagle, one that can be characterized as more of a friendship between equals than a relationship between commander and subordinate. The research clarified two main traits in the early stage of eagle taming. First, the taming processes seem a bit rough compared with the U.K. or Japan, though a clear procedure was constructed in the total process. Second, the taming of the eagles was heavily dominated by the obligation to feed them. In addition, quantitative research calculated the concrete amount of food in the annual diet, as well as the appropriation of animal species used in feeding the eagles. Altaic Kazakh eagle masters have developed a unique, systematized TEK over centuries of practice. Therefore, the development of TEK and local ethno-ornithological perceptions by eagle masters can be defined as a noteworthy contribution to human history.

Traditional horse-riding falconry has been still practiced at a community of Altaic Kazakhs in Bayan-Ölgii Province in western Mongolia. However, eagle masters are now declining its population as well as traditional art and knowledge for taming and hunting due to massive cultural alteration by tourism. This research discusses vulnerability and resilience of preservation for Altaic Kazakh eagle falconry with reference to research results of ethnography and current social survey from long-term fieldwork. Eventually, cultural sustainability of Altaic Kazakh falconry needs to be supported from the angles of three theoretical frameworks; (1) Natural resource management, especially supporting the population of Golden Eagles, their potential prey animals, and their nesting environment (2) Sustainable development and improvement of animal herding productivity and herderʼs livelihood, (3) Cultural affairs for protection based on the concept of nature-guardianship in its cultural domain. The series of these sustaining procedures defines that eagle falconry is a hybrid culture which would not preserved only human actions, but also maintenance of animal herding livelihood as crucial social context.

Kazakhs in Bayan-&Ouml;lgii Province of western Mongolia has become a biggest ethnic minority group under less-developed condition. Their culture and society is now revitalizing with traditional falconry culture and Islamic religion as axial driving force. This research focus on three research topics; (i) animal herding economy as current living status, (ii) traditional falconry culture as their identity, and (iii) Islamic religion as their ideological unity. These revitalizations reflect socio-cultural upheaval of which phenomenon illustrate past, present and future of Altaic Kazakh community. The research preliminary illustrates potential ways for future sustainability of their community with amity reconciliation with Mongolian majority.&nbsp;

The traditional transhumant animal-herding economy has continued to be a core subsistence activity in a community of Altaic Kazakhs in Bayan Ulgii province in western Mongolia. To achieve husbandry improvements and regional development as a central principle, basic social research based on long-term fieldwork was carried out from July 2011–October 2012 among 44 households living at the Buteu Winter Pasture in Sagsai County. The primary focuses of this research were: 1) total livestock procession and proportion of each household; 2) local methods of livestock husbandry, herding, and management; and 3) recent modes of seasonal transhumance mobility. Through concentrated fieldwork, the current situation of and issues facing a contemporary Altaic Kazakh community are explained with some negative social factors such as a 60% poverty rate, lower living status of the poor, lack of traditional husbandry skills, and stagnation of herding productivity.

There is potentially not more than 900 population of snow leopards (Pantera uncia irbis) living across the Altai Mountains in Mongolia. Especially, a plenty of “snow leopard accident”, (i) eyewitness, (ii) encounter, and (iii) livestock predatory, has been reported in Khovd and Bayan-Ulgii Province which has been dramatically increased from 2014.

To create well-being sustainable relation between snow leopard and local nomadic herders, this research clarifies socio-cultural context surrounding snow leopards among contemporary nomadic society. The fieldwork was carried on from 19th July ～ 22nd August 2016, with structured interview (1. hysteresis and retroactive research, 2. documentation of oral history) to 117 informants living in vicinity of snow leopard’s dwelling at Mt. Jargalant (Жаргалант), Mt. Bumbat (Бунбат), and Mt. Munkh-Khairkhan (Мөнх-Xайрхан) in Khovd Province.

Structured interview detected total 382 cases of “snow leopard accidents” of which 72.9% encounter with snow leopards have happened within inevitable herding activities (daily-grazing and search of large livestock). In addition, livestock predatory nearby herdsmen’s settlement is increased 4.7 times from 1990’s. These accidents are not only happened in winter (44.5%), but also during summer (19.7%). As a result, this annual threatening may have brought about some of retributive illegal killing are still happened against livestock predatory.

Further, this research shows a various kind of ritual and folklore about snow leopard within nomadic people (mostly Uriankhai). This local oral history, legend, experiences, and any T.E.K. narratives about snow leopards need to be defined as a source of cultural heritage which is created by centuries of precious phenomena “the herder-snow leopard interaction”. It will encourage subjectivity of locals to protect the entity of snow leopard and surrounding environment. Because, herder’s attitude for ecological conservation and self-controlled animal grazing is also key issue for sustainable co-existence with snow leopards.
