TiO、NbO等の4族、5族遷移金属亜酸化物は、高融点、高硬度でかつ金属的伝導性を有することが予想され、物性的に極めて興味深い。しかし、これらは大気圧下では合成困難で、特に単結晶はこれまで得られていないため、物性の詳細は不明である。本研究の目的は、これら亜酸化物と結晶性のよく適合するMo表面を基板とすることにより、これらの単結晶薄膜をエピタキシャル的に作成することにある。Moは融点が高いため、高温処理によるこれら高融点物質の結晶化が容易であると予想される。

TiO等の遷移金属亜酸化物は、高融点・高硬度でかつ金属的伝導性を有する物性的に興味深い物質であるが、それらの物性を担う電子状態については、これまでほとんど実験的研究は行われていない。これは、これらは大気圧下では合成が難しく、特に単結晶はこれまでほとんど得られていないことによる。本研究では、Ag(100)基板上に酸素雰囲気下でTiを蒸着することにより、TiO単結晶薄膜をエピタキシャル的に合成することに成功した。また、得られた薄膜に角度分解光電子分光測定を行うことにより、そのバンド構造の測定に初めて成功した。
