Valence-band structures of the polar ZnO surfaces, i.e., ZnO(0001)-Zn and ZnO(000 (1) over bar)-O, have been investigated by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy utilizing synchrotron radiation. On the (1x1) O-terminated surface, surface-localized states forming dispersing bands with a (1x1) periodicity are identified at the upper portion of the valence-band region. The energetic position of these states and the fact that their photoemission intensities are sensitive to gas adsorption suggest that there is a contribution from the O 2p dangling-bond orbital of the surface O atoms. Comparing the valence-band structure of the (000 (1) over bar)-O surface with that of the (0001)-Zn surface, a deviation of the electronic structure in the near surface region from that in the bulk is found to be larger on (0001)-Zn than on (000 (1) over bar)-O. The role of the step structures, which exist on both polar surfaces but with much higher density on the (0001)-Zn surface, in the modification of the electronic structure is discussed.

The electronic structure of Ni2P(0001) has been investigated by photoelectron spectroscopy utilizing synchrotron radiation. In the valence band spectra, a Ni 3d-P 3p hybrid band (main band) and a satellite were observed at 0-4 eV and at 8 eV, respectively. The satellite showed a, resonant behavior around the Ni 3p threshold, and is associated with the photoemission leading to the two-hole bound final state. From the analysis of the anti-resonance dip of the main band intensity, the Ni 3d component was proved to be included in the whole binding energy region of the main band. In the P 2p core-level spectra, the surface-shifted 2p levels were resolved from the bulk 2p levels, while the surface-shifted peaks were not found in Ni 3p spectra. The binding energies of the surface-shifted P 2p levels were lower than those of the bulk components by ∼1 eV. The surface-shifted levels were attributed to the 2p levels of the surface P atoms which take on a six-fold coordination. © 2009 The Surface Science Society of Japan.

The co-adsorption of titanium atoms and oxygen molecule on the Ag(100) cluster surface has been investigated by the density functional theory calculation. In order to achieve the convergence of a self-consistent-field (SCF) iteration, the approach using the pseudo-fractional occupation number (pFON) or the quadratically convergent SCF (QCSCF) approach is employed in this study. First, we investigated the adsorption of nTi atoms (n = 1-4) on Ag(100), and found that any bonding orbitals between Ti and Ag atoms were not formed and the systems were stabilized by the formation of Ti-Ti bonds. As the Ti-precovered surfaces were interacted with O2, we found that oxygen adsorbs both molecularly and dissociatively at n ≤ 2, while the adsorbed oxygen always dissociates at n ≥ 3. At n ≥ 3, the dissociated O atoms form a TiO-chain or a TiO-cyclic unit. We also revealed that the formation of Ti-O-Ti bond is essential for the stabilization of O2/nTi/Ag(100) systems. © 2009 The Surface Science Society of Japan.

Angle-resolved photoemission measurements are carried out to investigate the valence electronic structures of two different ZnO surfaces that are (0001) Zn-terminated (ZnO-Zn) and (000-1) O-terminated (ZnO-O) surfaces, and also of Cu clusters supported on these surfaces. On the clean ZnO surfaces, two valence bands are observed at ∼4 and 5−8 eV with a clear dispersion feature. Although these bands are associated with the bulk bands, it is found that the dispersion widths of the bands exhibit the termination dependence of the polar ZnO surfaces. Deposition of Cu on the polar ZnO surfaces induces downward bending of the ZnO band. Magnitude of Cu-induced bending is larger on ZnO-O than on ZnO-Zn. This indicates that the Cu—ZnO interface interaction is greater for the Cu/ZnO-O system than for the Cu/ZnO-Zn system. The analysis of the Cu 3d band structure implies that coupling between the Cu 3d band and the ZnO band is operative at the Cu—ZnO-O interface, whereas such coupling seems to be missing at the Cu—ZnO-Zn interface. We propose that the effect of electronic coupling is one of the factors that determine the interface interaction between the Cu cluster and polar ZnO surfaces.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has been used to study the electronic structure of the TiO film formed on a Ag(100) surface. The film was prepared by Ti deposition on Ag(100) at room temperature in an 02 atmosphere at 3.0 x 10(-9) Torr and subsequent annealing at 600 degrees C, and the film with the composition of TiO0.92 was obtained by this procedure. The conduction band and the valence band of the film are observed at 0-2 eV and 4-8 eV, respectively, and thus these bands are separated by a gap of about 2 eV. Resonant photoemission spectroscopy measurements show that the hv-dependence of the conduction band intensity shows a resonant behavior characteristic of the Ti 3d states. The two-dimensional electronic structure of the states in the conduction band along the ((Gamma X) over bar) direction of Ag(100) are measured with ARPES, and it was found that the states show dispersions consistent with the (1 x 1) periodicity. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES) have been used to study the electronic structure of the ZrO-Iike film formed on a ZrC(100) surface. It is found that, in addition to the O 2p band observed at 6-8 eV, states exist at 0.15 and 0.75 eV around the (M) over bar point. ARPES measurements show that the states at 0.15 and 0.75 eV disperse towards the lower binding energy side and cross the Fermi level along the (M) over bar -> (Gamma) over bar direction. RPES measurements show that the former state shows a resonant behavior characteristic of the intra-atomic Zr 4d resonance, suggesting that the state includes substantial contribution of Zr 4d orbitals. On the other hand, the latter state shows a resonant behavior similar to that of the O 2p state in ZrO. The resonance is thought to be caused through the inter-atomic deexcitation mechanism involving the emissions of O 2p electrons, and thus the latter state is ascribed to that mostly composed of the O 2p component. The valence electronic structures of the Cu-covered ZnO(1 0 1 0) surfaces have been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy utilizing synchrotron radiation. The coverage dependent change in the Cu valence band indicates the cluster formation of Cu at room temperature. The Cu 3d state forms a band with an energy dispersion, and the coverage dependence of the Cu 3d band structure suggests that the electronic structure of the Cu cluster is initially two-dimensional and turns to be three-dimensional at high coverages. The annealing effect on the morphology and the electronic structure of the Cu clusters is also examined and discussed. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Angle-resolved photoemission measurements are carried out to investigate the valence electronic structure of Cu on ZnO(10 $$(1) over bar0). The coverage-dependent measurements of the Cu 3d and 4sp bands reveal that the growth of the Cu overlayer is characterized by a cluster formation. These Cu clusters are semiconductors with an energy gap around the Fermi level at the initial stages of adsorption, while the metallic nature is developed with increasing coverage. The Cu 3d state forms a band with a bulklike energy dispersion at high Cu coverages, whereas the two-dimensional (2D) band is formed in the low-coverage region, where the clusters are semiconducting in nature. From the dispersion relation of the 2D Cu 3d band, the arrangement of the Cu adatoms within the clusters is found to be strongly influenced by the surface structure of ZnO(10 $$(1) over bar0), i.e., the Cu adatoms are linearly arranged along the Zn-O dimer rows of the substrate surface.

The oxidation process of an HfC(100) surface has been investigated by photoemission spectroscopy utilizing synchrotron radiation. When the HfC(100) surface is exposed to O2 at room temperature, the C atoms in the surface region are depleted, and the substrate's Hf atoms are oxidized by stepwise reactions and are finally oxidized to form an HfO2-like layer at high coverages (> 10 L). When the surface exposed to 10 - 50 L of O2 is heated, the work function decreases with increasing heating temperature. The work function reaches its minimum value, which is lower than that of the clean surface by 1.2 eV, by heating the surface exposed to 10 L (50 L) of O2 at 1000 - 1100°C (1100- 1200°C). The oxidized layer which gives the minimum work function is proposed to be mostly composed of oxycarbides, and a part of the surface is proposed to be covered by an HfO-like layer. The geometric and electronic properties of alkali metals (Na and Cs) on ZnO(10-10) are investigated by means of photoelectron spectroscopy and low energy electron diffraction (LEED). Growth of the Na overlayer on ZnO(10-10) at room temperature is characterized by layer-by-layer growth or monolayer growth followed by three-dimensional cluster growth. The Na adatoms in the first layer are in a cationic state, and the metallic phase is formed on top of the first cationic layer. Although Na deposition at room temperature does not yield any long-range ordered superstructure, annealing the Na-covered surface results in a (1×3) LEED pattern, and we propose the formation of the Na atomic chains along the Zn--O dimer rows. For the Cs adsorption system, the disordered overlayer by ionized Cs adatoms is also formed throughout the submonolayer coverage region. Unlike the Na adsorption system, heat treatment of the Cs-covered surface does not yield any ordered structure until all Cs adatoms desorb from the surface. [DOI: 10.1380/ejssnt.2005.299]

The (0001) surface of alpha-Mo2C has been studied using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. When the ion-bombarded (1 keV of Ar+) surface is annealed at 1600 K, a C-rich MOC-like surface is formed. The surface gives a complex LEED pattern composed of (1 x 1) orthorhombic spots, (2 x 2)R15degrees spots, and (4/3 x 4/3)R5degrees spots. Photon energy dependence of the normal-emission spectra is measured and it is found that the spectrum in the valence band region consists of Mo 4d band, Mo 4d-C 2p hybrid band, and C 2s band. Any peaks associated with surface states arc not found. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Photoemission spectroscopy (PES) has been used to study oxygen adsorption on the ZrC(111)surface between room temperature (RT) and 1000 degrees C. At RT oxygen is adsorbed dissociatively forming a (1x1)overlayer, which is accompanied by a monotonic increase in the work function (Delta phi = 1.0 eV at saturation). On the other hand, the work function decreases when the surface is reacted with oxygen at 1000 degrees C (Delta phi = -0.55 eV). PES studies were made on the adsorbed state of oxygen and it is proposed that the adsorbed oxygen atoms penetrate the surface and settle at a subsurface site at 1000 degrees C. TiO、NbO等の4族、5族遷移金属亜酸化物は、高融点、高硬度でかつ金属的伝導性を有することが予想され、物性的に極めて興味深い。
