      The first elastic electron scattering has been successfully performed at the self-confining radioactive-isotope ion target (SCRIT) facility, the world's first electron scattering facility for SCRIT technique achieved high luminosity (over 1027 cm-2 s-1, sufficient for determining the nuclear shape) with only 108 target ions. While Xe132 used in this time as a target is a stable isotope, the charge density distribution was first extracted from the momentum transfer distributions of the scattered electrons by comparing the results with those calculated by a phase shift calculation.

      The SCRIT electron scattering facility is under construction at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. This is the world's first facility dedicated to the study of the structure of short-lived nuclei by electron scattering, which has been a long-standing dream for nuclear physics. A novel Self-Confining RI Target (SCRIT) technique makes this challenging research possible. A series of test experiments using stable nuclei performed at this partially completed facility show that the collision luminosity between electron beam and target nucleus reaches 10(27) cm(-2) s(-1), which is required for an elastic electron scattering measurement to determine the charge density distribution of the target nucleus. The first electron scattering for unstable Sn isotopes will take place in the year 2014.

      The silicon vertex tracker (VTX) will be installed in the summer of 2010 to enhance the physics capabilities of the Pioneering High Energy Nuclear Interaction eXperiment (PHENIX) experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The VTX consists of two types of silicon detectors: a pixel detector and a strip detector. The pixel detector consists of 30 pixel ladders placed on the two inner cylindrical layers of the VTX. The ladders are required to be assembled with high precision, however, they should be assembled in both cost and time efficient manner. We have developed an assembly bench for the ladder with several assembly fixtures and a quality assurance (Q/A) system using a 3D measurement machine. We have also developed an assembly procedure for the ladder, including a method for dispensing adhesive uniformly and encapsulation of bonding wires. The developed procedures were adopted in the assembly of the first pixel ladder and satisfy the requirements. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

      We carried out a demonstrative electron scattering experiment using a novel ion-trap target exclusively developed for short-lived highly unstable nuclei. Using stable (133)Cs ion as a target, this experiment completely mimicked electron scattering off short-lived nuclei. Achieving a luminosity higher than 10(26) cm(-2) s(-1) with around only 10(6) trapped ions on the electron beam, the angular distribution of elastic scattering was successfully measured. This experiment clearly demonstrates that electron scattering off rarely produced short-lived nuclei is practical with this target technique.

      The multiplicity of inclusive photons has been measured on an event-by-event basis for 158.A GeV Pb induced reactions on Ni, Nb, and Pb targets. The systematics of the pseudorapidity densities at midrapidity (rho(max)) and the width of the pseudorapidity distributions have been studied for varying centralities for these collisions. A power law fit to the photon yield as a function of the number of participating nucleons gives a value of 1.12 +/- 0.03 for the exponent. The mean transverse momentum, [p(T)], of photons determined from the ratio of the measured electromagnetic transverse energy and photon multiplicity, remains almost constant with increasing rho(max).       この研究はこれまで不可能と思われて世界でも例を見ない不安定核の電子散乱実験を実現するためのイオン濃縮装置の開発である。我々はイオンを加速装置内にとどめて電子散乱を実現できることを実証したが、その蓄積イオン濃度の向上が実験の成否のカギとなる。我々は最終的に電極のエッジ効果を利用したイオントラップに方針を切り替えて、目標の半分ほどのイオン濃度を実現することに成功した。

      R&Dの対象として最難関の技術は光子のバックグラウンドが多い環境下での低エネルギーイオンを測定である。そのために、四重極電場で90度曲げてイオンをチャンネルトロンで捕らえる実験を行い反跳イオン検出器のデザインを完成した。現在他の予算を使い、反跳イオン検出器の建設に取り掛かっている。スピンフリップの実験が実現する前に、理化学研究所において電子散乱実験に組み込みその動作確認を行う予定である。
