Global governance and nonmarket strategy are two important and interconnected subjects of international business scholarship. In this article, we introduce the special issue by first providing a brief review of recent trends in global governance and nonmarket strategy and summarizing some of the important research contributions that have shed light on them. We then present an overview of the contributions to the special issue and their contributions to global governance and international nonmarket strategy research. We conclude with some observations about this scholarship and provide suggestions for future research directions. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

When a firm undertakes foreign direct investment, it must determine the level of ownership in its foreign subsidiary. This study examines the determinants of the ownership strategy of a Japanese logistics firm from the perspective of international business studies (IB). The study focuses on firm-level factors, including "contributed assets" for shaping firm-specific advantage which a parent firm possesses, "complementary assets" which such firm may need to acquire in a foreign country, and international experience. It also analyzes country-level factors including the institutional difference between a home country and a host country. The study conducts a Tobit regression analysis on the relationship between such factors and the equity ownership level in a foreign subsidiary based on the data-sets of Japanese logistics firms.

    • The effect of multinationality on firm performance: An examination of Japanese service firms Peer-reviewed

This article examines the relationship between multinationality and performance using a panel data set of more than 300 major Japanese service firms from 2003 to 2007. This relationship has been extensively examined in manufacturing firms in international business studies, but rarely so in service firms. We review how factors related to performance change with the progress of multinationality. We test the hypothesis that the impact of multinationality on the performance of Japanese service firms depends upon the stage of multinationality. Specifically, we examine the so-called 'S-curve' relationship: a negative relationship in the early and final stages and a positive one in the middle stage. The empirical results based upon panel data analysis do not provide statistical evidence to support the S-curve relationship in the cubic model. On the other hand, they demonstrate a U-shaped relationship in the estimated curvilinear model. Multinationality may have different impacts on firm performance at different stages and may yield net costs in the early stage and net benefits in later stages. Japan has largely failed to develop an extensive aerospace industry capable of designing and manufacturing entire aircraft. One explanation has been that the political cum security relationship between the US and Japan precluded the development of an autonomous aerospace industry. This relationship may be changing. Japan has succeeded in gaining extensive sub-contracting work on the new Boeing 787, including technology-rich work on wing design. As such, this paper puts a different take on the concept of path dependence; that it can be a social construction. This paper considers whether technological change in the sector is, however, opening opportunities for Japanese Finns to break free from their current trajectory.

    • Comparative Analysis of the Emergence of New Business : Attempt to Integrate the Institutional Approach and the Social Construction Approach

Two major approaches have been employed for comparative analyses of international business environments. One of them focuses upon structures, while the other highlights agents. The present study attempts to explore a new theoretical framework that integrates the two by applying studies undertaken in the field of sociology. The empirical subject of the present study is the international comparison of business environments for the establishment of entrepreneurial firms. In recent years, efforts have been made to quantify national differences of business environments for entrepreneurship. One of major achievements is Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), compiled jointly by Babson College and London Business School. According to GEM, Japan is one of least entrepreneurial countries among Group of 7. Why? What lies behind it and what kind of changes in the Japanese business environment may help change the situation? Prevailing explanations range from the diverse socio-economic structures that distinctly define risks and returns of entrepreneurship to born and acquired personal attributes of entrepreneurs. The study examines the effectiveness and the limit of the two dominant approaches to highlight that neither of them stands by itself. It then presents an argument that the theoretical integration may be possible by examining a social construction process that takes place between structure and agent.
