This paper reports how academic knowledge based on geography can be returned to villages where intensive, long-term fieldwork by numerous researchers was conducted. An example of making a photo book and building an exhibition as an eco-museum in Dongkhuai village in Lao PDR is described. It is proposed that geography can activate villagers' recognition of the value of their indigenous knowledge systems and ways of earning a livelihood if sympathetic relationships can be developed among researchers, visitors, and villagers.

Insects are an important natural resource, both for self-sufficiency and as commercial food products in many parts of the world. The use of edible insects reflects regional preferences and socio-cultural significance, which can be described in terms of regional differences. This study describes some edible insects in three regions: Japan, Southeast Asia and Southern Africa, and focuses on systems of traditional practices as the socio-cultural implications of people's preferences regarding edible insects. The case studies presented here describe such insect-related customs as the continuation of the traditional practice of insect eating in Japan, Southeast Asia and Southern Africa. These case studies describe the uniqueness or special characteristics of the custom, and the significance of its existence in the social sphere. Edible insects are regarded as cultural resources reflecting a rich biodiversity. They represent an alternative source of natural food resources in remote or mountainous areas. People who eat insects have established a broad variety of methods for collecting and cooking the rich diversity of edible insect species that are available. However, increases in demand could lead to competition and overexploitation, resulting in the future decline of these resources. In areas affected by overdevelopment, insect habitats are also likely to decline. It is necessary to raise people's awareness of the importance of the use of insects for food in order to ensure that insects are used in a sustainable manner, and to promote their proper use and conservation. © 2009 The Entomological Society of Korea and Blackwell Publishing Asia Pty Ltd.

This paper describes how the people utilize the diversified natural resources for their living and form subsistence activities connected with seasonal change. The connection of subsistence activities as well as land use and habitat is also focused on. Various subsistence activities and land use in the wetland of Lao PDR are characterized by rice farming and paddy fields. The village and land use are formed on the basis of rice cultivation. The paddy fields and their surroundings are regarded as the ecotone where creatures live in dependence on the environment in which rice growing takes place. With rice, water, trees, and wild animals and plants, the paddies in our research area have complex ecological characteristics.

In order to clarify the Hg contamination risk by ASGM, we conducted the field survey in Jose Panganiban, Camarines Norte in Philippines. Through hair analysis, we found that dietary intake of fish is the main path of Hg contamination to residents. The Hg was dispersed through both of air and water flow, and then the distribution of Hg was not related with the distance from the rodmill station, where Hg is used. Cyanide treatment increased the soil contamination, but was not related to uptake by plants. Around bay area, the Hg concentrations in seawater, sediments, and suspended matter sampled in east side were higher than west side. This means the transportation of Hg as suspended matter through water flow was the main process in the bay.

The termite is one of the major food insects in the world. Collecting techniques and cooking methods are varied, and the soil of termite mounds is also used in various ways. This study shows not only the use of termites as food but also multiple uses as well as the use of termite mounds as land use.The data was collected through the field surveys conducted in Southern Africa such as South Africa and Zimbabwe and Southeast Asia such asd Thailand and Laos.
The co-existence of human beings and termites is sustained, as both produce and feed each other. Houses stand close to termite mounds, because the houses were built with the materials from the mounds. By spreading termite mound soil around the mounds and downwards to the lower land, the residents developed new farmland. Consequently, the connection between termites and humans is reflected in the land use and landscape.

Tree growing paddy field in tropical Asia where the number of trees has been reducing in paddy floor but are increasing on levee, has still an important role as providing materials for livelihood in tropical rain-fed rice growing villages. It should be noted that some kind of planted trees become obstacles for rice yield. Termites and their mounds are also contributing to agricultural production and village life. The fertile soil of mound is made by the interaction of termite activity with tree growth on the mound. Digging and removing whole mound in paddy field become popular for celery production in Thailand, however, mounds will disappear after 10 years there. Some villagers are using mound soil for manure taking care of regeneration of mound. Digging in small part of outer wall of mound stimulates regeneration by termites according to an experiment. It should be payed attention that extremely poor growth of rice is caused on the site after mound removing in paddy field.

We discussed on how we can return research outcome to the local society, mainly based on a case study in Laos. In order to frame the discussion in practical basis, we set two social groups as targets ; village and local university. A small museum was constructed in the rural village where research was conducted. Research outcome was exhibited in the museum and villagers evaluation was investigated. It was found that the exhibition for illiterate people needs to be developed. GIS seminar, which had the highest demand, was performed in the university. As a result of examination of the curriculum, it was suggested that feedback of geographical knowledge should be located in multi-scale phenomena and comparative perspective.

      M. Tawa provided basic and general illustrations of stone weir fishing by referring to ethnogaphic and other writings on fisheries around the world and discussed the history of stone tidal weirs in the Penghu Islands, Taiwan. He also researched the emigration of fishers in a small-scale fishing village at the mouth of Pahang River in East coast of Malay Peninsula.
      S. Shinohara researched the utilization of shark products and shark fin trade in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan. He suggested that shark fin was main product in Hong Kong but various parts of shark were fully utilized for food and non-food use in other countries.
      K. Nonaka and A. Goto researched on utilization, distribution and trading patterns of marine resources in the Philippines and Taiwan. Nonaka found that the islanders utilized various marine resources in the reefs and shallow waters. Especially dried sea cucumbers and sea shells were played significant role in foreign trade in Caohagan Island, the Philippines. Goto discussed the technological systems and the networks on the trade of shell-based crafts of Cebu Island and Panay Island, the Philippines and t Lan Yui Island, Taiwan.
      T. Akimichi researched about many types of disputes and conflicts in the fishing grounds that were between inshore fishing boats and off shore fishing vessels in Andaman Sea. Besides he got much information about the conservation of dugong and discussed about the meaningful relationship of governmental institution and NGO to conserve the marine resources.
      T. Iida made research into fishing activities of Malay fishers from ecological viewpoint in Jambu Bongkok Village in Terengganu State, Malay Peninsula. He found that they had two types of fishing activity, extensive searching activity and intensive searching activity, to catch the shoal of fish.

This is an interdisciplinary research based on fieldworks at the watershed of the Mekong in China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand and Vietnam.
The outline of this survey is as follows.
Associate Professor Takai studied the changes on the intention for eating cattle and water buffalos in northern and northeastern Thailand, and investigated its social sense. Associate Professor Nonaka conducted his research on the manners of using an insect, which is a part of natural resources, for food. Professor Akimich handled the issue of the process in domestication of fowls.
He stated that it was not necessarily simple, and could be found in the complicated exchanges between nature and the world of human beings. Professor Takeda studied "folk costume", and is doubtful of its stability in terms of time. Associate Professor Fukao elaborately examined how the rubber plantations, which had been introduced mainly into the basin of Xishuang Banna in Yunnan, had influenced the environment.
We, through this research, succeeded in making synthetic survey on the relationship between nature and the human culture in the valley of the Mekong from the viewpoints of genetics, the use of plants and animals, the habitat segregation and cooperation between ethnic groups and cultural and social aspects such as costumes and social structures We believe that this research has given us a clue to the possibility of cooperative use and administration of the international river, and to the solution of environmental problems, which cannot be separated by borderlines.
As for the joint research in Yunnan, the manuscripts of the research report have already been completed, and will be published both in Japan and in China.

In marshlands of Southeast Asia, including mangrove, coral reefs, tidal flat, and freshwater zones, a variety of renewable natural resources have been utilized by local inhabitants, government agencies and entrepreneurs. Present research has clarified the following general characteristics of the resource use in these marshlands ; (1) resource users include foragers (Orang Asli) , specialized fishermen, and farmer-fishermen, (2) resource use patterns have drastically been changed during these few decades, (3) renewable natural resources have been exploited not only for subsistence but also as commodities for local, regional and international markets in which complex ethno-networks are linked together, and (4) under rapid socio-economic changes resource management practices have been implemented at the community-level as well as a joint co-management programs..
Specifically, present research has demonstrated that (1) in three major ecological zones ; e.g., freshwater, brackish and littoral, and coastal zones, similar process of resource use is seen as commodity production in market economy systems, but that (2) zone-specific changes have also occurred according to ecological and socio-economic conditions, and (3) conflicts and competition over resources have increased due to high market demand and environmental deteriorations.
In freshwater zones, dam construction, and logging industry in Laos are two major factors to affect aquatic environment and associated productive activities. In littoral and tidal flats or Viet Nam, southern Thailand, mangrove destruction and land reclamation for shrimp and fish ponds, and tin mining have also caused serious ill-effects for fishing and collecting activities. In coastal zones, an increasing number of trawlers and push netters have brought about resource depletion especially of juveniles of shrimps and fish. These changes of three ecological zones have also affected upon neighboring ecological zones on which local inhabitants have depended on their daily pursuits. Integrated programs for sustainable resource management are therefore vitally important, taking interactions between ecological zones being into consideration. Co-management scheme should then be designed not only among people involved, but also the environments themselves, as eco-management.

      1. By analyzing the life history of the San, the transition of livelihood after the settlement, i.e, the contract work of cultivation and the trust of livestock, and the collection of materials related to the history of contacts among | Gui- || Gana and neighboring languages, interactions and dynamics of symbiosis between San hunter-gatherers and Bantu agro-pastoralists were elucidated.
      2. By collecting and analyzing the life history of the San elder men, the details of past life, such as hunting activity, extra-marital sexual relationship, male initiation ritual, ideology concerning witchcraft and sorcery imported from Bantu agro-pastoralists, were reconstructed and elucidated.
      3. Utilization of insects as food and material culture was investigated, and the qualitative importance of insects especially as food in San dietary life was pointed out. Furthermore, it was clarified how the minute cognition of animal figure and behavior closely correlated with such symbolic interpretation of nature as foresight, mythical origin of habit and morphology.
      4. Previous reports on phonological and grammatical structures and lexicon in | Gui and || Gana were elaborated, and a linguistically adequate orthography of | Gui and || Gana which enable us to record vernacular names accurately was proposed.
      5. By analyzing demographic data of past 30 years, population dynamics of the San were elucidated.
      6. By comparative analysis of ritual systems of the San and the Kgalagadi, it was clarified that the factors concerning witchcraft and sorcery were hardly accompanied when San ritual ceremonies were influenced by the Kgalagadi.
      7. Language and motor development and socialization of San children were elucidated in relation to the "modernization" problems, such as the decline of hunting-gathering, deterioration of egalitarianism and introduction of school education etc.
      8. In the ecotone surrounding the Kalahari Desert, the importance of the mopane tree of family Caesalpiniaceae was stressed not only as material culture, but also as one playing a symbolic role in religious rituals. Furthermore, it was clarified that the conflicts among ethnic groups for land right might often occur in relation to the problem of ethnic identity and even affect profoundly a political issue in state level such as general election.
      9. The historical event of San migration initiated by the Botswana government occurred in 1997. Analysis and elucidation of the problems accompanied by this migration were striven and completed partly, leaving a number of subjects as future problem.

This research project aims to analysis use of renewable natural resources and management practices by local inhabitants in eastern Indonesia. Spetial attention in paid on transformation of resource use in diversified ecological settings (coral reefs, mangroves, sago groves, rain forest) by local inhabitants under rapid socio-economic changes during these few decades. North, central and south Sulawesi, Tidore Island, and Seram Island were selected for intensive studies.
Research were conducted in several places between 1994 and 1996 by seven reearchers.
Bajo, Bugis, Makassarese are migration-oriented people in Sulawesi that seek such marine resources as trepang, shark fin, and pearl-shells. Thesecommodities are mainly used for export for Hong Kong and Singapore.
Also, Tidorese on Mare Island isknown as ceramic trader and they transport potters as far as Irian Jaya using small-scale trading vessel.
Recent rise of demand of agar-agar (Eucheuma and Gracilaria spp.) has urged Bajo to commence mariculture in shallo coral habitat. It has brought about population migration to Nain Islnad, north of Manado, destruction of coral habitats as well as exccessive use of mangroves for constructing drying platforms. Furthermore, demand of live reef fish (Epinephelidae spp.) and Napoleon wrasse in Hong Kong seafood markets, has threatened not only groupers populations but also corals due to the use of sodium cyanide.
In the mountain areas of Sulawesi, rottan, honey, resin and cynamonium barks are major economic products collected by the mountain dwellers (Orang Wana) and migrants from Java. These are either sold at small markets or traded to China via economic channels of middlemen.
During the course of infiltration of commoditization of forest and marine resources have changed time allocation in people's daily life, brought about resource depletion, conflict over esources between the groups.
While sasi in known as community-based indigenous resource management practices in eastern Indoenesia. Although it is effective means for equity goal and sustainable resource use, it connot solve inter-village boundary issues. Local government often plays an important role in conflict litigation.
Rapid socio-economic changes in Indonesia should be examined as integrated linkages at community, area, national and international levels in which ethno-networks have linked producers (mainly Bajo), middlemen, retailer and middlemen in larg cities in these economic transactions.

This research focuses on the socio-cultural change in an egalitarian society of/Gui and //Gana speaking hunter-gatherers under the settlement which had begun since 1979. Intensive field researches was carried out at ! Koi! Kom in the Xade (! q'are) area locating near the mid-Western border of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, Botswana. Comparison was made with the recent development of the ! Kung San (Zu/hoasi) residing in the Nyae Nyae area, Namibia.
The analysis of population dynamics exemplified striking increase of birth rate and distinct decrease of infant mortality. The penetration of cash economy through the wage labor and the selling of folk-crafts not only affects the socio-economic arrangement, but causes serious incongruence of traditional norms with modern values. The introduction of new way of subsistence, i. e. , agriculture and goat-raizing, re-organizes social relationships which were previously based on a quite fluid tendency of grouping.
Analysis of everyday conversation threw light on specific aspects of social conflict to the settlement, the most conspicuous of which was between the San and the Bakgalagadi agro-pastoralist. It also elucidates logics underlying various kinds of speech acts, su1h as requesting, requiring, and criticizing, as well as the characteristics of communal decision-making process.
By means of linguistic research, the basic vocabulary of/Gui and//Gana dialects comprizing more than 2,000 words were collected, of which phonetic features, as well as phonemic organization, were confirmed. Further, morphological and syntagmatic structure of both dialects were ascertained. Other researchers are collaborating with the linguists in order to compile an inclusive dictionary.
We have also paid the special attention on several eco-cultural complexes embodying the folk-view toward the "nature" , i. e. , regulation and taboo of animal food, folk-taxonomy of birds, gathering and cooking of many species of insect, and cognition system of invertebrates based on the essentially omnivorous diet. From the viewpoint of anthropology of women, a female researcher recorded the life histories of several/Gui women, which includes a body of detailed descriptions concerning the elaborated symbolic devices constituting the ritual for the first menstruation.
The staff of the University of Botswana compared the sociological data from the field research, with documents and publications before and after the independence, so as to elucidate both the features of the relationship between the San and the Bantu agro-pastoralists, and the transition in the policy for governing the San from the colonial to Botswana government.
