This study aims to provide an in-depth qualitative analysis of instructional effects in L2 pragmatics by exploring the manner in which Japanese EFL learners' noticing of target English request forms is constrained by different types of treatment tasks and the subsequent effect of the learners' noticing on their learning outcomes. Following the pretest, 49 learners were assigned to one of the two instructional (treatment) conditions: a form-comparison condition and a form-search condition. The treatment data were examined with regard to the extent to which the learners had noticed the appropriate manner of request realization in English. The treatment data were further compared with the posttest self-reports, which revealed the learners' primary concerns regarding their L2 request realization. The results indicated that during the treatment, the learners in the form-comparison condition noticed the target request forms to a greater extent than those in the form-search condition. Further, the learners' higher awareness of the target forms tended to ensure the emergence of these forms during their posttest performance. © 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Previous research on interlanguage pragmatics revealed that, under implicit pragmatic instruction, some learners noticed the target pragmalinguistic features, whereas others receiving the same instruction did not. This suggests possible effects of individual difference (ID) variables on learners' noticing of pragmalinguistic features. Among the ID variables, this study focused on motivation and proficiency, exploring their relationships with Japanese EFL learners' awareness of six types of L2 pragmalinguistic features under an implicit input condition. Eighty Japanese college students first completed a motivation questionnaire and a proficiency test. They then took part in a noticing-the-gap activity as the treatment task. The degree of the learners' awareness of the target pragmalinguistic features was assessed through a retrospective awareness questionnaire administered immediately after the treatment. The following two major findings were obtained: (1) The learners differentially noticed the target pragmalinguistic features; and (2) the learners' awareness of the target features was correlated with motivation subscales, but not with their proficiency. In particular, the learners' intrinsic motivation was found to be closely related to their pragmatic awareness. An attempt was made to further examine whether current models of attention in SLA are relevant in accounting for the noticing of L2 pragmalinguistic features.

This study examines the transferability of five Japanese indirect request strategies to corresponding English request contexts. Pragmatic transferability was operationally defined as transferability rate. This rate was established through the summation of the perceived contextual appropriateness of a Japanese request and the perceived similarity in contextual appropriateness between a Japanese request and its English equivalent. The Japanese request strategies were found to be differentially transferable. The learners’ transferability perception was influenced by their L2 proficiency
however, there was no definite tendency for a positive correlation nor for a negative correlation between L1 transfer and proficiency. Furthermore, the transferability of each L1 request strategy seemed to be determined by the interaction between the politeness and conventionality encoded in each strategy and the degree of mitigation required in each imposition context. © 1996 Cambridge University Press.

This study examined the comprehension of English conventional indirect requests by native English speakers and Japanese learners of English. Subjects read stories inducing either a conventional or a literal interpretation of a priming sentence. Reading speeds did not vary as a function of the interpretation. Subsequent target sentences that paraphrased either the literal function of the interpretation. Subsequent target sentences that paraphrased either the literal or the conventional interpretation of the prime sentence were read more quickly when they paraphrased a conventional interpretation of the sentence than when they paraphrased a literal interpretation. Target sentences were also read more quickly if they paraphrased the interpretation induced by the context than if they did not match. The results suggest that both native and nonnative speakers process both meanings of an ambiguous conventional request.

The present study revealed that when Japanese learners of English learn complex bi-clausal request forms in the implicit input condition in which they need to inductively learn the target forms without relying on explicit explanation provided by their teacher, learners who are motivated to improve their English through classroom activities and those who demonstrate high listening abilities are able to notice the target forms. However, it was also found that learners' awareness of the target pragmalinguistic forms does not necessarily lead them to their stable acquisition of these forms.
