    • Salon nail care with superficial self-disclosure vitalizes psychological state Peer-reviewed

Physical attractiveness has long been established as a desirable trait in society. Physically attractive individuals are considered more competent, successful, and sociable. Numerous studies have examined the influence of makeup on physical attractiveness and its subjective psychological effects. However, the effect of nail care has not yet been examined. This study aimed to explore the psychological effects of nail care. Female Japanese participants (N = 334) completed an online questionnaire. The results showed that nail care positively elevated three aspects: positive emotions, relaxation, and vitalization. Moreover, they confirmed significant differences between receiving nail care from salon manicurists and self-performed nail care in terms of positive emotions and relaxation. The results indicated that nail care altered the appearance of the recipients’ nails and their self-esteem, including their feelings, mood, and motivation. Furthermore, this study indicates that it may be preferable for both manicurists and clients not to self-disclose in-depth, as this would negate the positive effects of nail care. The study concludes with recommendations for future research.

Several studies on tourism have examined the effects of vacation and travel on individuals' wellbeing. However, relatively little is known about the underlying psychological factors and mechanisms. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of a winter vacation on individuals' wellbeing. A total of 507 participants (255 men and 252 women) completed three questionnaires at three different time points. The questionnaires comprised psychological scales and items to seek demographic information so that the changes in their wellbeing could be assessed. The results revealed that people who traveled had higher subjective wellbeing than those who did not. Moreover, out of the four elements of the recovery experience, mastery was the only one influenced subsequent subjective wellbeing. The findings suggest that it is crucial to take vacations and to savor recovery experiences while off work. In particular, experiencing new and challenging events during a vacation was the most significant predictor of vacationers' subsequent wellbeing. Our results clarify what type of vacation is most effective for wellbeing. The results can help tourism practitioners manage their customers' experiences better during their vacations, and these efforts will arguably contribute not only to the wellbeing of vacationers but also to future company growth.

This study aims to examine the influences of travel during a summer vacation on subsequent subjective happiness. We also investigate the roles of memories of the vacation and of recollecting these memories. The participants reported their degree of subjective happiness via two online
surveys. The analyses showed that the recollection of travel had a positive influence on subsequent subjective happiness. Notably, this effect was not direct but rather mediated through satisfaction with the vacation. The results showed that not only having a fun vacation but also recalling
the memories of that time have the possibility to promote vacationers' well-being. The article concludes with important implications for the success of tourism businesses as well as the enhancement of tourists' senses of well-being. Also the study's limitations provide some interesting avenues
      for future research.

Previous studies have shown a negative relationship between working hours and happiness. Moreover, application of creativity in the workplace is a critical determinant of organizational performance and employee well being. However, the effects of workers' leave and vacation experiences on their occupational well-being and life satisfaction through creativity remain unexplored. Therefore, we focused on the ability of employee creativity to induce happiness, and hypothesized that vacations would enhance employees' creativity and thereby increase their well-being. To evaluate this hypothesis, we conducted an Internet survey involving 800 Japanese workers. The questionnaire consisted of items concerning demographic information, recovery experience, employees' creative behavior, occupational well-being, and life satisfaction. The results showed that recovery experiences during vacations promoted employee creativity and improved occupational well-being and life satisfaction. Our results have important implications and show both limitations and some intriguing directions for future research.

In this study, we examined how travel experiences affect job performance by improving generic skills and self-efficacy. We collected data using a questionnaire delivered to 232 Japanese employees working for a temporary employment agency. Additionally, an objective measurement (financial data) was used to assess employees' job performance level. The results revealed that travel experiences positively influenced job performance as mediated by generic skills and general self-efficacy. In addition to offering important implications for organizations and employees, our findings are likely to advance the current research on the mechanism of the benefits of travel on job performance.

© 2019 Gokmen Arslan. All rights reserved. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the Ways of Savoring Checklist (WOSC-J), adapted from the original English version of the Ways of Savoring Checklist (Bryant & Veroff, 2007). We translated and back-translated the WOSC-J, and administered it to 520 Japanese adults using an online survey. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to examine the factor structure of the measure. Confirming our hypothesis, a two-factor model (amplifying and dampening) yielded the best goodness-of-fit to the data. Each of the two factors had adequate internal consistency reliability. To assess the criterion validity of the new instrument, this study also examined associations between the two WOSC-J subscales and measures of emotional experience, self-esteem, and optimism. Consistent with Western data, the amplifying subscale tended to show a stronger positive relationship with positive mood states than did the dampening subscale. Overall, the present findings indicate that the WOSC-J is an acceptable tool for measuring savoring among Japanese adults.

Many studies have focused on the effects of tourism on mental health. This study revealed that short-stay vacations at mental health rejuvenation facilities could reduce Japanese employees' stress levels. We conducted two studies with two groups of participants (N=34 and 26, respectively), in order to obtain both objective and subjective evaluations. The results suggested that taking a short-stay vacation at a mental health rejuvenation facility was effective for helping employees to maintain good mental health, and that stress reduction was particularly evident in the highly stressed group. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed with a view to providing suggestions for addressing work-related stress in Japanese employees.

Given the limited research in immigrants' psychological well-being with respect to homeland tourism, this study explored the Chinese immigrants' psychological well-being and the relationship with their homeland visit. A survey was conducted for a sample of 500 immigrants. The CES-D was used to measure respondents' psychological well-being. The results revealed that respondents' psychological well-being not only significantly varied across different demographic variables, but also significantly correlated with their homeland visit. The results suggest that even though respondents may have adapted well to the new living environment of Macao due to a high degree of cultural similarities, they still tend to keep a connection with their homeland through homeland visit as it could benefit their psychological well-being. Through homeland visit, respondents could regain or affirm their connection with and emotional social support through the old social circle in their homeland. The study contributes to the understanding of the positive relationship between homeland tourism and immigrants' psychological well-being and reveals the need for further research in homeland tourism.

This study examined the psychological difference of psychological well-being from homeland visits between immigrants in Japan and those in Macau. We conducted the Internet survey for 100 Chinese immigrants in Japan and the interview survey for 500 Chinese immigrants in Macau. As common results of both immigrants, motivation of "visiting friends and relatives" positively influenced "retrospect" activities, in turn, "retrospect" activities positively influenced "future orientation" feeling, and "future orientation" negatively influenced "CES-D score" which is an index for the tendency of depression. However, there were many differences in homeland visits by the immigrants in Japan and by those in Macau. Knowing these similarities and differences in psychological process will help to encourage homeland visit tours.

This study focused on the moderating effects of self-monitoring, and examined the interaction between self-monitoring and neuroticism on job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior. The participants were 133 employees of a Japanese traffic enterprise (123 men and 10 women), with a mean age of 38.02 years (<i>SD</i>=10.27). Previous studies have shown that workers with high neuroticism have lower job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior than workers with low neuroticism. However, our results showed that workers with high self-monitoring, even if they had high neuroticism, had the same degree of job satisfaction and organizational citizenship behavior as workers with low neuroticism.

The purpose of this study is to investigate what type of lodgings is popular on internet business websites. For this purpose, a specific business website, one of the biggest websites for lodging reservations in Japan, will be analysed. In concrete terms, the number of reservations that 20 lodgings in Shinjuku had received in October 2003 was totalled, and these scores reflect the measure of popularity. Meanwhile, the lodging information on the website will be analysed, and it will be used as a measurement of lodging types. Then the relationship between them will be analysed with a correspondence analysis. The results show: (a) the most important criterion is the convenience of services the lodgings provide
and (b) the price "5000jpy" is critical to the split between popularity and unpopularity. In short, the most popular lodgings on the website were convenient and reasonable lodgings.

In this study, we examined how the patterns of emoticons and emotional word marks appeared in CMC, especially in e-mail exchanges. A text-mining analysis was used in the study. Eighteen university students were requested to exchange e-mails over a period of two weeks with unknown correspondents who were, in fact, cooperating in the experiment. One hundred and forty-one e-mails thus obtained were analyzed. A text-mining software "True Teller" extracted 4,125 words of 257 kinds for further analysis. As a result, various emotional expressions that appeared in the CMC as well as in Face-to-Face communication were clarified. In addition, emoticons were seen to appear frequently in the early stages of communication and had the effect of softening tense relationships between e-mailers.

High self-esteem has been regarded as desirable. However, in an ego threatening situation, such as task failure, individuals with high self-esteem were likely to be more aggressive and violent than those with low self-esteem (Baumeister, Smart, & Boden, 1996). Therefore, Jordan, Spencer, Zanna, Hoshino-Browne, and Correll (2003) postulated that the consideration of not only explicit self-esteem but also implicit self-esteem would predict various indicators of defensiveness, such as in-group favoritism. Results showed that persons with high explicit self-esteem and low implicit self-esteem were most defensive. These findings, however, were only examined by experimentally distributed group settings (i.e. minimal group paradigm). Our study explored the effects of explicit and implicit self-esteem on in-group favoritism in actual group settings. The results were consistent with the findings of Jordan et al. (2003). Nevertheless, it seemed that the effects would differ according to the situation.<br>

The present study considered 'the situational sense of <i>nigate</i>' (which is characterized by uncomfortable feeling and apprehension in an interpersonal situation where people have to deal with awkward social situations) among students in the elementary school classroom. The main purpose of this study was to investigate whether there is a difference in the score of situational sense of <i>nigate</i> among two groups determined by sociometric status. Fourth, fifth, and sixth graders (102 boys and 96 girls) answered the questionnaire that consisted of the Situational Sense of <i>Nigate</i> Measure for Children, a measure of positive sociometric nominations, and personality scales. Three status groups of students (star, average, and isolate) were identified on the basis of positive sociometric nominations. The star group was significantly lower on the troublesomeness score of the situational sense of <i>nigate</i> than the isolate group. In addition, the situational sense of <i>nigate</i> showed significant positive correlation between 'shyness' and 'public self-consciousness'.<br>

In this study, "individual primal scene" was defined as scenery of the place where they had ever lived and had most strong impact. This study examined individual preferences for sightseeing destinations determined by individual mental factors including "individual primal scene" and two psychological scales. Ninety-eight female undergraduate students in Japan answered their primal scenes and their preferences for sightseeing spots. Then, they were asked to complete two psychological scales: Self-Monitoring Scale (Lennox & Wolfe, 1984) and Sensation Seeking Scale (Furusawa, 1989). Result demonstrated that the persons whose primal scene contained little rural scenery had more propensity to "Disinhibition", and they preferred to the place of entertainment. On the other hands, the persons whose primal scene had more rural hometown preferred to go to adventure spots. Moreover, high self-monitors preferred the nature place and natural view spots.

This study focused on some of the social psychological determinants of taking part in "Green Tourism (GT)", a type of vacation that involves staying in rural areas and participating in rural activities. Respondents were male (n=29) and female (n=159) undergraduate students in Japan. Relationships between the interest in participating in GT, and three social psychological scales, as well as the students' motives and preferred leisure activities, and the attributes of the GT itself were analyzed. The social psychological scales revealed that female students with high social apathy had a higher interest in participating in GT. Regarding motives for GT, male students who scored high in the "interest in culture", "long for relaxation", and "closeness to other people and nature" factors showed a strong interest in participating in GT. In contrast, female students who had a higher interest in participating in GT scored high in the "unusualness", "interest in rural life", and "novelty" factors. Of the travel attributes, a long stay and staying in the Tohoku area increased the male students' interest in participating in GT, and staying at a farm, staying in the Hokkaido area, and in mountain villages increased the female students' interest. Other results showed that students who had high interest in participating in GT enjoyed traveling in general. Female students who had little travel experience favored taking part in GT. Suggestions for promoting GT in Japan were discussed.

This study examined the nature and origin of 'sense of nigate, ' which is an awkward and uncomfortable feeling one has toward specific, relatively few others, especially in a interpersonal situation. Study 1 investigated its nature with a questionnaire administered to company employees (200 men and 45 women) and undergraduates (243 men and 205 women). Two factors were found for the sense: troublesomeness and apprehension. It should be noted that apprehension was lower for management than non-management workers. This tendency was due to the worker position, rather than his/her age. In Study 2, self-monitoring scale (Lennox & Wolfe, 1984) was administered to 60 high school students (12 men, 47 women, and one unknown), to investigate the origin of the sense. As predicted, sense of nigate had a negative correlation with the ability to modify self-presentation, and positive one with the sensitivity to expressive behavior in others.

The purpose of this research was to investigate psychological factors, including smiling behavior, eye contact, and personality traits, that affected other-evaluation(customer and employer evaluation) of the room service staff in Japanese inns. Study 1 focused on smiling behavior, eye contact, and personality traits that affected customer evaluation of the staff Study 2 dealt with personality traits that affected customer and employer evaluation. The subjects of studies 1 and 2 were room service staff(6 and 9 females, respectively). The results of study 1 demonstrated that the amount of eye contact, public self-consciousness and social anxiety were significant factors in customer evaluation of the staff. In study 2, duplicity was negatively correlated with customer evaluation, and job retention was positively correlated with it Perspective taking and lower private self-consciousness were positively correlated with employer evaluation. A higher age was positively correlated with employer evaluation.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality and employment and job satisfaction as an airline cabin attendant (CA) or customer service agent (CSA). Study 1 focused on the initial employment of CAs and CSAs. Study 2 dealt with subjects who succeeded in finding work as CAs and CSAs. Study 3 considered the factors leading to job satisfaction as CAs and CSAs. The subjects of studies 1 and 2 were 154 female students in a vocational school. The subjects of study 3 were 61 female CAs and CSAs. The results of study 1 demonstrated that a greater ability to modify self-presentation was significantly correlated with being employed in these positions. In study 2, lower sensitivity to expressive behavior in others and lower social anxiety were positively correlated with being employed later on. Public self-consciousness and duplicity were found in study 3 to have significant negative correlations with job satisfaction. Consequently, these results suggest that self-monitoring is a significant situational personality that is positively related to employment as a CA or CSA.

The present study examined the effects of voice and physical appearance on interpersonal attraction. Furthermore, the attributes of voice that enhance interpersonal attraction were investigated. in the first study the subjects were 25 female students from one university and the target persons were four male students from another university. The subjects rated attractiveness of voice and physical appearance, and the overall interpersonal attraction of the target , persons. The attractiveness of voice and physical appearance had independent effects on interpersonal attraction. In the second study the subjects were 62 students (20 males, 42 females) from one university and the target persons were 16 students from another university (eight of each sex). The results of the first study were replicated. Bright, generous voices, low vocal pitch and a small range of vocal pitch increased interpersonal attraction.

The present study examined the effects of a sound environment on self-disclosure. It was hypothesized that a positive sound environment (serene, classical music) would enhance disclosure, whereas a negative sound environment (white noise) would decrease disclosure. The subjects were 17 male and 16 female undergraduate students. They were randomly and evenly assigned to positive or negative sound environments for self-disclosure. Results demonstrated that subjects preferred different sound environments for disclosure according to their sex. That is, males preferred a positive sound environment, but females preferred a negative one. In accordance with these preferences, males disclosed more when they were in a positive sound environment, but females disclosed more when they were in a negative sound environment. Although preferences on sound environments were different between males and females, the hypothesis was confirmed. This was also supported by results on self-disclosure motives.

One hundred and fifty Japanese undergraduates were randomly assigned either a counseling interview condition (a "getting help" goal; n = 75) or a hiring interview condition (a " selling myself" goal; n = 75). Subjects' beliefs about the intimacy of information about themselves, perceived communication skills, disclosure strategies, and the willingness of self-disclosure were assessed. The "getting help" goal led to a great amount of disclosure strategies and higher levels of willingness of self-disclosure than the "selling myself" goal. Path analysis indicated that the goals, the beliefs, and the perceived communication skills jointly affected the strategies, and that the strategies, in turn, mediated between the goals and the willingness of self-disclosure. Implications for the goal-based model of self-disclosure (Miller & Read, 1987) were discussed.

The present study examined relationships between self-disclosure, negative child-rearing attitudes of mothers and self-disclosure of children, and between self-disclosure of children and their adjustment to their classes. A causality (self-disclosure of mother would facilitate self-disclosure of children, negative child-rearing attitudes of mothers would inhibit self-disclosure of children, and self-disclosure of children would facilitate their adjustments to their classes) was also investigated. Subjects were 135 primary school and junior high school students. They filled out self-disclosure questionnaires for children, self-disclosure questionnaires for their mothers, and mother child-rearing attitudes scales. Their teachers checked their adjustment to their classes. The relationships and the causality were confirmed, except between negative child-rearing attitudes of mothers and self-disclosure of children. These were caused by the fact that child-rearing attitudes consisted of two factors. One factor facilitated self-disclosure of children and the other inhibited it.

One hundred and ninety-nine university students (101 males, 98 females) served in a study designed to examine various factors affecting a discloser's degree of liking of and self-disclosure to a recipient. Specifically, the effects of (1) the recipient's degree of openness (high, low), (2) whether or not the recipient conveyed the discloser's self-disclosure to a third party (yes, no), and (3) the intimacy of selfdisclosure by the discloses (high, low) were assessed in terms of (a) change in self-disclosure by the discloser and (b) change in liking by the discloser. Results confirmed the hypotheses that: (1) the degree of openness of the recipient and the conveyance of self-disclosure by the recipient would interact with change in the discloser's liking of and self-disclosure to the recipient, and, (2) the degree of openness of the recipient and the intimacy of self-disclosure would interact with change in the discloser's liking of and self-disclosure to the recipient. Moreover, females were found to be more sensitive than males to conveyance by the recipient.

The present study examined the effect of the recipient's status in a group on the estimation of the self-disclosure motive. It was hypothesized that a member of high status would estimate the self-disclosure motive of new member in a group more normative than one of low status from ingratiation theory (Jones & Wortman, 1973). Subjects were 43 university students. They were divided into groups and manipulated their status in the group. They were instructed to listen to a self-disclosure of a new member of the group on a tape recorder. Then they were asked to estimate the discloser's motives. Results demonstrated that there was a status effect on estimating normative self-disclosure motive. That is, a member of high status estimated the new member's self-disclosure motive more normative than one of low status.

Subjects were 428 university students. In Study 1, the self-handicapping scale (Jones et al., 1986) was translated into Japanese. The self-handicapping scale was analyzed, its items and structure were checked for reliability, and so on. As a result "SH23" that consists of 23 items was made "SH23" was negatively correlated with self-esteem scales as predicted. In Study 2, the predictive validity was confirmed. Also two factors that are the "can't" factor and the "wouldn't" factor which were extracted in Study 1 were contributed independently to predict self-handicapping behaviors.

This study examined the relationship of a person's motives for selt-disclosure and degree of self-disclosure to the congruency of personality judgment by the discloser and recipient. The subjects used were 76 pairs of close friends, members in each pair being of the same sex. Personality judgments of disclosers were executed by the disclosers themselves as well as the recipients; and disclosers were also asked to fill out (SMI) and (JSDQ). Results demonstrated that (JSDQ) had no relation to the congruency of personality judgments, but the motives had. In particular, persons who were apt to disclose based on mostly the emotional motive had the minimum coneruencies on their personality judgment by disclosers and recipients.

Social psychology is a comprehensive science that encompasses almost all of the factors in the social environment. It uses an understanding of these basic factors to explore the principles contained in our real life events. Furthermore, it aims to provide people with ways to promote ideas on adaptive behavior in real life. Our goal is to build adaptive relationships with others, and we must commit to maintaining a mutually cooperative society, i.e. social well-being. Everyday episodes attract our interest. Therefore, social psychology studies sometimes tend to be preoccupied with only fragmentary and temporary phenomena. We should be able not only to outline, but also to expand, the domain of research concerning &quot;society&quot;, with a sustainable, long-time perspective on the acquisition of well-being. In light of previous research trends in social psychology, we need to consider how this science might have contributed to society, and how it has met people&#039;s expectations. We should think about what constitutes valuable research and what we ought to look for at this present moment. Social psychology has advanced along with advances in many related sciences. This interdependency should be taken more into consideration by everyone. It is important that social psychology does not draw attention to simple, popular issues; it should keep in mind that we, as humans, possess the power to substantiate human history. We need to propose ways of finding adequate objectives and methods that meet the demands of worthwhile scientific research that has social reality and enhances personal and social well-being.

Autobiographical memory sometimes induces depression. Self-disclosure and self-focus may mediate and moderate the relationship between autobiographical memory and depression. This study examined the process. Self-disclosure decreased depression. Self-focus is divided into rumination and reflection. While rumination enhanced depression, reflection decreased depression indirectly.

In the 3-year period, each group conducted the scheduled research and obtained results as follows :
      1. In an experiment which examined the effects of heterosexual priming of the self-concept change, it was found that participant tended to perceive themselves more feminine than controls, only for the group who had traditional sex-role attitudes. This results suggest that priming of heterosexual relationship induced the self-categorization according to traditional female stereotype, as far as this group is concerned.
      2. In order to construct GHQ scale which could be used in a field studies for disaster victims, two-point scaled GHQ was constructed and examined its reliability and validity. Specifically, 167 undergraduate students were asked to complete two versions (two point- or four-point scales) of GHQ. It was found that for two-point scaled GHQ, the response rate of respondents was lower compared to four-point scale version and the reliability was rather low. Furthermore, some items lacked the discriminatory power.
      3. In a questionnaire study, eighty hair stylists were asked to complete the questionnaire to examine the relationship between emotion regulation strategies (reevaluation and suppression), job satisfaction, and burnout. The results showed that there was no relation between these variables for male stylists. However, for female stylists, the strategy of reevaluation was related to job satisfaction and burnout.
      4. In an experiment, the effects of the correspondence between participants' personality style (i.e., Introversion and extraversion) and self-presentation upon internalization of self-presentation and physiological responses. It was found that for the participants who presented themselves in the opposite direction of their personality, their pulse rate GSR were significantly increased.
