    • Indexically anchored onto the deictic center of discourse: Grammar, sociocultural interaction, and 'emancipatory pragmatics' Invited Peer-reviewed

      This paper tries to articulate an indexical theory of pragmatics that can consistently cover not only (1) referential and (2) non-referential, social-indexical practices, but also (3) linguistic structure, or its metalinguistic (cross-linguistic) matrices, comprised of indexically anchored grammatical categories and distinctive features. Noting that all of the three domains(1)-(3), can be shown to be indexically organized and anchored onto the deictic center of communicative event, that is, on Sociocultural, social-indexical interaction, I shall focus on articulating the deictically centered indexical organization of linguistic structure, or grammar. In so doing, I shall argue that not only social-indexical pragmatics, but also referential pragmatics and even grammar are anchored onto the deictic center of discursive interaction, which is, first and foremost, a Sociocultural event. Consequently, theories of 'language', including both pragmatics and linguistics, must be 'liberated' from the reference- or semantics-centric perspectives; instead, they should start from 'the bottom up', from the deictic center of Sociocultural interaction, i.e., 'discourse'. • Toward a critical dialogue across languages and cultures: On native and Western linguistics in modern Japan Invited Peer-reviewed

      This paper tries to present a native grammarian's view of Japanese, articulated in opposition to the analysis of the language based on the notions of 'Western linguistics' such as 'subject' and 'tense'. Although Yamaguchi's particular analysis, provided in section 2, is not shared by all native grammarians of Japanese, it does give an illustrative example of the perspectival stance, or 'footing', of a dominant school of National Language Studies (koku-go-gaku), of which Yamaguchi is a leading figure, towards language and culture. This 'footing', as seen in section 2, is characterized by its focus on 'emic analysis' and its espousal of nativism, which may be associated with nationalistic essentialism. As such, it gives us an opportunity to observe not only a different grammatical tradition, but also the irreducibly cultural, i.e., (social) pragmatic, dimension of grammatical (and pragmatic) analysis, centrally concerned with the (cross/sub)national identities and (cross/sub)disciplinary perspectives of grammarians, linguistics, and pragmaticists, as briefly suggested in section 1. This article articulates the status of phonetics and pragmatics in linguistics and in the broader matrix of communication, or semiotics. After reviewing how phonetics and pragmatics have been theorized in linguistics, it briefly describes how they are integrated with each other in the semiotic matrix of communication, centered around the discursive processes of presupposing contextualization, creative textualization, and decontextualizing stereotyping. Further, it illustrates how linguistic structure is indexically anchored on phonetics and pragmatics through distinctive features and grammatical categories, respectively. Finally, it succinctly explicates how phonetic and pragmatic variations may become decontextualized and endowed with social-indexical forces and then recontextualized to create discursive texts. © 2006 Elsevier Ltd. This paper analyzes honorifics and deference entitlement in Modern Japanese along with the modern Japanese and Euro-American pragmatic theories thereof, as ideologically mediated social phenomena, in the critical-theoretical framework where they are contextualized to their socio-historic surrounds, inter alia to the modern socio-economic conditions giving rise to, but hidden behind, the modern pragmatic theories and the honorific phenomena analyzed by them. The aim of our study was to formulate an integrated and innovative kind of intercultural communication studies. For this purpose, we placed the concept of "sustainability" as the main objective, incorporating various fields related to communication such as culture, nature, language as well as translation and interpreting. We have also applied our efforts to educational aspects of the graduate school, which we consider to be vital to consolidate theory and practice of communication studies for a sustainable future. The outcome of our research has been compiled in "Introduction to Intercultural Communication Studies" published by Misuzu-shobo.

      The aim of this project is two-fold : i) to propose a genre-analytical approach as a viable methodology to delineate and validate the parallel text in comparative and contrastive cultural research, and ii) to construct a cognitive model to explicate the findings drawn from the data obtained by triangulation of qualitative and quantitative methods.
      The data include video recordings and participant observations of authentic tutorials in British, Japanese, and intercultural settings, retrospective interviews to intercultural tutorial participants, semi-structured interviews on British educational values and systems to Japanese students studying in Britain, and discourse completion tests administered to British and Japanese informants.
      A key issue relates to how best to describe and explain the socio-cultural assumptions that play an important role in the generation, perception and interpretation of pragmatic practices in our daily communication as well as in intercultural encounters. The analysis has dealt with : i) how students in both educational cultures are classified according to their behavioral and communication patterns ; ii) how Japanese students embody their cultural, symbolic, and economic habitus, which they tend to transfer or to negotiate in the British academic settings ; and iii) how Japanese students recognize and employ verbalization and non-verbalization in academic discourse. It has been argued that the Japanese students share at varying degrees certain socio-cultural assumptions and values about their educational goals and rationales, which comprise their cognitive model. This model is altered, negotiated, or sustained in their discursive interactions with the British tutors, and has been demonstrated to be an effective tool to evaluate and describe the generation, perception and interpretation of pragmatic practices
      Emphasizing the increasingly intercultural nature of academic encounters, and elaborating them as both language and social practices is one way of working in the current context of educational globalization.

      In an attempt to better understand the cultural basis of discourse, This group held seven research meetings to discuss the types of discourse which reveal the cultural backgrounds of speakers. In our search for ways to gather data that would enable us to explore the role of culture in discourse, we examined previously gathered corpora, including the "map corpus" and the "call home" corpus. Ultimately, we decided to collect a new data set using as a reference the "Pear Story" and "Frog Story" corpora that were gathered in the United States in the 1970s and 1980s and that included a comparison across languages. We used the story of "Mr.O" and decided to collect data from a number of languages (Japanese, English, Korean. Chinese, and Thai). The research design included videorecording of the data as well as DAT recordings. A pilot study was undertaken in early March.
      <Heisei 16>
      Employing the research design devised the previous year, the group began collecting data. The data gather included three tasks : 1) construction of a story in pairs ; 2) narrative ; and 3) spontaneous conversation about an occurrence that surprised the participants. The data was gathered in pairs, with 26 pairs of Japanese, 22 Americans, and 4 each of Chinese and Korean. Through the help of IR Aruto, the data was transcribed. The Japanese data was transcribed : 1) in Kanji and kana letters ; 2) as well as the roman alphabet ; and 3) including markings for overlapping talk. Following the collection of the data, closed workshops and special meetings were held to reflect on and discuss the results. We also decided to present the data as a panel at the International Pragmatics Conference to be held in the following year.
      <Heisei 17>
      We held a closed workshop to further discuss the data. In addition, we presented our results both within and outside of Japan by organizing a panel at the 9th International Pragmatics Conference (the conference venue was Italy) and by organizing and taking part in the 7th International Forum on Language, the Brain, and Cognition (co-sponsored by the Japan Women's University and Toohoku University and held at the Shinsensankan at Japan Women's University). We also made preparations to set up a homepage for our data and to publish our results for an even wider audience.
