      The present study investigated mother-child correlations in the process of epigenetic development, and the influence of such correlations on youth identity formation. Participants were 104 college students (21 males, 83 females) and their mothers. Correlational and Structural Equation Modeling analysis revealed the following: (1) there were many significant correlations between psychosocial themes of epigenetic schema for both mothers and youth; (2) significant mother-child correlations did not appear to exist for aspects of basic trust and autonomy; (3) mother's basic trust and autonomy were significantly correlated with youth identity; and (4) basic trust and autonomy of youth function as mediating variables in the model of maternal influence on youth identity.

      The main purposes of the present study were to construct a Multiple-Indicator Multiple-Cause (MIMIC) Model, based on the factors of the fulfillment sentiment model (Ohno, 1984), and to examine the structure of this model. The Multiple-Indicator Multiple-Cause Model hypothesizes that independence and self-reliance, solidarity, and trust affect the latent variable inclusive identity, and that inclusive identity affects fulfillment sentiment and satisfaction with life. The Fulfillment Sentiment Scale and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (Diener et al., 1983) were completed by 285 undergraduates. Covariance structure analysis was carried out in order to investigate the hypotheses of the Model. The results were as follows:(1) the goodness of fit index was high enough;(2) the validity of the factors of the Fulfillment Sentiment Scale was reconfirmed; and (3) the model fit the data regardless of gender. These results with a college student population suggest that fulfillment sentiment is a sense of fullness, that is, the wholeness of a more inclusive identity, not only in adolescents but throughout one's life.

      This study examined the structure of communications in late adolescent and their parents relationships, from a point of view of the individuation model which was proposed by Condon, Cooper, and Grotevant (1984). Thirty Japanese families (including undergraduate students and their both parents) participated in Family Interaction Task used to measure family individuation. The first 300 utterances (communication behaviors) of each family were coded into 14 categories. The frequencies of utterances in each category were submitted to ANOVA to assess the differences of communication behaviors among family member. As a result, adolescents expressed utterances indicative of connectedness (acknowledgememt, agrees with/accepts/incorporates other's ideas, requests information/validation, and states other's feeling/mindreads/dictates feeling) much more than their father significantly. In the next step of analysis, the data (11 categories except for 3 categories) were submitted to factor analysis using principal component solution with varimax rotation. This analysis showed the structure consisted of 3 components (permeability, self-expression, and separation).

      NISHIHIRA (1995) found factors accounting for powers of recovery in ego by analysing biographies. The factors are 1) basic trust (Erikson, 1959) and health throughout the infant period, 2) competency (Erikson, 1959) from childhood to adolescence, 3) first, second and third psychological weaning, 4) a sense of mission as an identity. The purpose of the present study was to examine why Beethoven didn't commit suicide by analysing his HEILIGENSTADTER testament and his life history. Conclusions are the following. 1) He had basic trust and health throughout his infant period thanks to his relationship with his mother. 2) He had musical competency from childhood to adolescence. 3) His father influenced his super-ego, and his grandfather influenced his ego-ideal. Finally, Beethoven identified with his great grand father. 4) He felt a sense of mission in his historical identity as an artist. Thus, we can conclude with certainty that Beethoven had the powers of recovery inherent in a young ego, and this is the reason why he didn't commit suicide.

      The purpose of the present research is to investigate the structure of fulfillment sentiment in contemporary adolescence, and to confirm to what extent the sentiment model for contemporary Japanese adolescence proposed by Nishihira (1979) explains the structure of fulfillment sentiment.<BR>For the first study, 280 subjects rated 53 items that constituted the fulfillment sentiment instrument. The data were analysed by means of factoranalyses. Results of the analysis revealed that the fulfillment sentiment consisted of 4 factors, thus confirming the model proposed by Nishihira. Four factors were named (1) fulfillment sentimemt vs. boredom-emptiness,(2)<I>jiritsu-jishin</I> (independence and self-reliance) vs.<I>amae</I> and lack of self-reliance,(3) solidarity vs. isolation,(4) trust and time-perspective vs. mistrust and time-diffusion. An examination on the pattern of correlations among four scales indicated the followings: the scale for fulfillment vs. boredom-emptiness showed significant positive correlation with the scale for <I>jiritsu-jishin</I> vs.<I>amae</I> and lack of self-reliance, the scale for solidarity vs. isolation, and the scale for trust and time-perspective vs. mistrust and time-diffusion. These results provided positive evidence to support the Nishihira's model. However, it was found that that the Nishihira's model might require a certain modification on the basis of results.<BR>The second study was designed to examine stability of each factor of the fulfillment sentiment scale by using the identical factor score method proposed by Bentler (1973). It was found that stability of the fulfillment vs. boredom-emptiness scores was lower than that of <I>jiritszt-jishin</I> vs. <I>amae</I> and lack of self -reliance, solidarity vs. isolation, and trust and time-perspective vs. mistrust and time-diffusion. These results suggested that the scale of fulfillment sentiment vs. boredom-emptiness represented an aspect of mood, while the other scales did the aspects of an ego-identity.
