The attraction effect in multialternative decision making reflects the context dependent violation of rational choice axioms. This study examined the effect of concurrent divided attention in three-alternative visual choice tasks. The concurrent divided attention task is considered to consume the mental resources available for the choice task. There were three conditions: (a) the task-relevant condition, in which the auditory task should consume resources across multiple levels; (b) the task-irrelevant condition, in which the auditory stimuli should consume perceptual resources; (c) and the control condition, in which the resources should not be consumed by auditory stimuli. Thirty-three participants solved 24 hypothetical purchase problems with three alternatives that differed in terms of two attributes. The results indicated that the choice proportion of the target was significantly higher in the task-relevant condition than in the task-irrelevant and control conditions, thereby suggesting that a reduction in cognitive (and/or response) resources is critical for the attraction effect.

The attraction effect in multi-alternative decision making reflects the context-dependent violation of axioms that are considered fundamental to rational choice. This effect is believed to depend on relatively effortless and intuitive processing (System 1) rather than on effortful and elaborative processing (System 2). To investigate the relationship between cognitive resources and the attraction effect in detail, we used a task-irrelevant probe technique, wherein task-irrelevant auditory probes were presented while participants viewed each alternative in a decision-making task, and measured the electroencephalographic responses to the probes. Thirty participants solved 48 hypothetical purchase problems with three alternatives that differed in terms of two attributes. We found that, in the second epoch of the experimental trials (possibly corresponding to the evaluation and comparison stage), the mean N1 amplitudes of the event-related potentials elicited by the auditory probes were significantly smaller when participants chose the competitor (i.e., trials in which no attraction effect occurred) than when participants chose the target (i.e., trials in which an attraction effect may have occurred). This result suggests that the allocation of more cognitive resources to the alternatives disrupts the attraction effect. This finding supports the assumption that intuitive comparisons among alternatives executed by System 1 are critical for the occurrence of the attraction effect.

In multi-attribute decision making, the presence of the attraction effect or compromise effect is considered a form of irrational choice because these effects violate the principles of rational choice. These two context effects are similar in that they increase the choice share of a particular option, but the mechanisms by which they occur are believed to differ, owing to the different trade-off structures of the choice sets concerned. Previous studies have indicated that negative emotions and the strategies employed in decision making differ between the two context effects and that these effects correspond to Systems 1 and 2 of the dual process theory. In this study, focusing on trade-offs, we examined the mechanisms by which these two context effects occur, by experimentally manipulating cognitive resources and measuring negative emotion and eye movement in decision making. We attempted to increase and decrease these resources by using a glucose drink and a cognitive depletion task, respectively. Results showed that the attraction effect increased and the compromise effect decreased in subjects with depleted cognitive resources compared to subjects with restored cognitive resources. Negative emotions were strongly aroused in the compromise effect. Eye tracking data showed that a non-compensatory decision strategy was used in the attraction effect context and that a compensatory decision strategy was used in the compromise effect. These findings suggest that reasoning systems and decision strategies are directed by differences in the trade-off structure of the choice sets, which ultimately lead to the occurrence of the above two context effects.

The compromise effect warrants specific investigation in multi-attribute decision making as it violates the principles of rational choice. In order to investigate the underlying mechanism of the compromise effect, we examined participants’ information search and acquisition while recording their eye movements. 10 undergraduates were requested to solve 12 hypothetical purchase problems that had three alternatives described along two attribute dimensions. A time-series analysis of saccades between two options revealed the dynamic temporal aspects that important saccades increased while unimportant saccades decreased.

In multi-attribute decision making, the similarity, attraction, and compromise effects warrant specific investigation as they cause violations of principles in rational choice. In order to investigate these three effects simultaneously, we assigned 145 undergraduates to three context effect conditions. We requested them to solve the same 20 hypothetical purchase problems, each of which had three alternatives described along two attributes. We measured their choices, confidence ratings, and response times. We found that manipulating the third alternative had significant context effects for choice proportions and confidence ratings in all three conditions. Furthermore, the attraction effect was the most prominent with regard to choice proportions. In the compromise effect condition, although the choice proportion of the third alternative was high, the confidence rating was low and the response time was long. These results indicate that the relationship between choice proportions and confidence ratings requires further theoretical investigation. They also suggest that a combination of experimental and modeling studies is imperative to reveal the mechanisms underlying the context effects in multi-attribute, multi-alternative decision making.

The aim of this study was to examine how syntactic information affects the semantic processing of ambiguous verbs in spoken Japanese. The effect of a postpositional particle on semantic access of an ambiguous verb at the end of the sentence was demonstrated in two kinds of sentences, S-ga-V sentences (subject, subjective postpositional particle, and ambiguous verb) and O-wo-V sentences (object, objective postpositional particle, and ambiguous verb). A cross-modal priming method was used in which a target noun was presented visually in Kanji (Chinese) characters either one syllable before the end or immediately after the end of the ambiguous verb. Weak multiple priming occurred in the one-syllable-before condition, followed by selective access in the immediately after condition, but this multiple access was partially constrained by the preceding postpositional particle. A brief occurrence of multiple access and rapid transition to selective access were detected. Furthermore, objective particles were found to have stronger constraints on multiple access than on subjective particles, A connectionist model using a constraint-based lexical approach was consistent with the experimental results.

Based on Guo and Holyoak's (2002a, 2002b) work, we propose a stochastic comparison-grouping theory of multialternative decision making to explain three context-induced violations of rational choice. The attraction effect and the similarity effect are explained by stochastic comparison grouping, according to which similar alternatives are compared more frequently than dissimilar alternatives are. The compromise effect is explained by the assumption that attribute values are perceived according to a basic psychophysical function, in addition to the comparison grouping mechanism. Furthermore, this model explains individual differences in choice by assuming interpersonal differences in pre-existing attitude toward products.

Connectionist modeling is one approach to understanding human intelligence using simulated networks of neuron-like processing units. In this article, we report on recent progress in connectionist models that simulate empirical data of higher-level cognitive processes, these being memory, learning, language, thinking, cognitive development, and social cognition. We also review and summarize the advantages and disadvantages of these connectionist models. The computational framework of connectionist modeling has the potential to integrate specialized psychological findings of different areas using the same architectures and local functions of units and connections, inspired from neuroscience. In particular, the problems of dealing with structured information in distributed form, and doing tasks that require variable binding in connectionist networks are discussed from several different perspectives. As one possible solution to treat systematic mental representations properly, the symbolic connectionist model, which is a hybrid approach using symbolic representations and connectionist architectures, is explained. We argue that connectionist computer simulation offers significant benefits for today's psychological researches, and that connectionist modeling is likely to have an important influence on future studies.

Connectionism is an approach to understanding the mechanisms of human cognition using simulated networks of neuron-like processing units. In this article, I attempt to report on recent progress in connectionist models that simulate empirical data of natural cognitive tasks, these being visual word perception, memory, word naming, understanding word meanings, speech perception and production, sentence understanding, and reasoning. I also summarize the advantages and disadvantages of these connectionist models. In particular, the problems of dealing with structured information in distributed form, and doing tasks that require variable binding in connectionist networks are discussed from several different perspectives. I argue that connectionist computer simulation offers significant benefits for today's researches of cognitive science, and that connectionist modeling is likely to have an important influence on future studies. The question of how the human brain efficiently realizes and learns symbols and rules by the parallel distributed processing is still one of the great intellectual problems of our time.

A parallel distributed processing (PDP) model of resolution of ambiguous Japanese nouns and verbs shown with contexts is presented. As a result of phonological restriction, Japanese possesses a large number of homophones. In understanding Japanese, the problem of lexical ambiguity resolution is especially important. In implementing the PDP model, the pronunciation, spelling, syntactic information, and semantic information of ambiguous words are represented as a distributed pattern of activation levels over a large set of simple processing units in a fully interconnected network. After the network is trained using the delta rule, the recall of learned patterns is evaluated by presenting just part of the lexical and contextual information. The similarity of recalled and learned patterns is used to indicate lexical decision times or the frequency of recall in empirical results. Consistent with several experimental data, the PDP model can successfully simulate the effect of context-dependent and context-independent frequencies of ambiguous nouns and verbs in the time-course of activation, as well as accessing an alternative meaning of ambiguous nouns in associative recall.

In this study, the authors examine rapidly spreading CMC (Computer-Mediated Communication) from a social psychological point of view and investigate the differences between CMC and FTF (Face-to-Face) communication modes through an experiment based on the conditions of both modes. Subjects were randomly assigned into three-person groups and then answered a series of choice dilemma problems involving risk decision-making. We defined a concept of"interpersonal pressure"that illustrates the idea of some tensions or psychological burdens brought by others into the communication situation. It was found that the interpersonal pressure decreased significantly in CMC and the authors suggest that the phenomenon of status equalization in CMC can be explained by such a decrease in interpersonal pressure. However, group polarization was also observed in CMC. Comparing CMC with FTF, the subjects in CMC had a tendency to make more risky decisions. Furthermore, a first advocated statement effect was also examined in the study.

The time course of lexical ambiguity resolution was investigated using the phonological priming paradigm between polysemous phonogramic Kana words (primes) and compound ideogramic Kanji words (targets) in Japanese. Subjects made the lexical decision under rapid serial visual presentation of sentence contexts, primes, and targets. In Experiment 1, the context-dependent associative strength of target words and prime-target stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) were manipulated. At 300-ms SOA, results of reaction time showed facilitation effect for both contextually appropriate and inappropriate target words. At 500-ms SOA, while the facilitation of reaction time held for contextually appropriate targets, this effect was not obtained for contextually inappropriate targets. In Experiment 2, the context-independent associative strength was manipulated in addition to the two variables of Experiment 1. Results of reaction time replicated the multiple access at short SOA and the context-dependent selective access at long SOA. The results of error rates indicated a greater context-independent facilitation effect at 300-ms SOA than at 500-ms SOA. These findings provide evidence in support of the transition from multiple access, which is influenced by context-independent associative strength, to context-dependent access in the process of resolving lexical ambiguity.

Effects of levels-of-processing on retention of visually presented target and nontarget letter words were studied in relation to the amount of processing resources expended on the attended task. Attention was directed to targets by the shadowing. Targets and nontargets were distinguished by sensorial or semantic attributes. Processing resources expended were measured by reaction time at an auditory signal during the shadowing. Experiment I. with 20 subjects, showed that recall rate of targets and nontargets was higher and the expended resources were greater, in semantic than in sensorial processing. However, in Experiment ‡U, with 48 subjects, the task difficulty was balanced with respect to shadowing errors and the expended resources were found no more different with different levels-of-processing, while d' measures of targets and nontargets were greater in semantic than in sensorial condition. It was concluded that the effects of levels of-processing depended not on the resources expended, but on discriminative attributes. © 1986, The Japanese Psychological Association. To investigate the mechanisms underlying context-dependent choice effects (attraction and compromise effects), we examined the information on search patterns by recording our participants’ eye movements. Sixty-four undergraduates who were randomly assigned to the two context effect conditions solved 10 hypothetical purchase problems with three alternatives (the target, competitor, and decoy) described in the two attribute dimensions. Using an apparatus operating with the corneal reflex method (Tobii eye-tracker X120), eye movements were monitored and recorded. Thus, we confirmed significant context effects on choice proportions in the two effect conditions. Next, we divided whole numbers of saccades into four phases and performed a time-series analysis. A time-series analysis of saccades on the two attributes and three alternatives revealed dynamic temporal aspects in the two effect conditions. Additionally, using the maximization scale, we reanalyzed the information on search patterns of the participants’ saccade data, which were separated by their decision-making styles (maximizers or satisficers). In the compromise effect condition, the context effect was higher for satisficers than for maximizers. Moreover, the frequency relations of the three types of comparisons in the third phase were different in the two groups. Thus, the analysis revealed important dynamic aspects of pairwise comparisons, where participants’ information searches gradually focused on their final decision-making. These results, together with our previous research, suggest that the empirical examination of computational models is imperative in order to reveal the mechanisms underlying context effects in multi-alternative decision making.

Two much-studied findings regarding context-dependent choice effects, the attraction and compromise effects, warrant specific attention since they constitute violations of axioms fundamental to rational choice. The present study addresses these effects collectively because of their important shared commonalities.
These effects occur when a third alternative (decoy) is added to a two-alternative choice set. This study examines the effects in a two-attribute form (see Figure 1). The alternatives, namely the target and the competitor, constitute the core set, and choosing one or the other requires a trade-off.
When the decoy is added to this core set, if it is inferior to the target on all attributes, the choice probability of the target should increase relative to that of the competitor. This is called the attraction effect. When the decoy is set to an extreme, such that the target’s position becomes intermediate between the decoy and the competitor, the target should be chosen most often. This is called the compromise effect.
To investigate the underlying mechanism of these two context effects concurrently, we examined participants’ information acquisition while recording their eye movements (eye fixation times; Tsuzuki, Chiba, & Soma, 2014). To further examine the occurrence mechanism of the two context effects in multi-alternative choice, we reanalyzed the information search patterns of participants’ eye-tracking data in detail, distinguished by their final decisions (target or competitor).

Studies of the attraction effect usually utilize a three-alternative (target, competitor, and decoy) decision-making task in which each alternative has two attributes (Tsuzuki & Busemeyer, 2012; Tsuzuki & Guo, 2004). When the decoy attributes are slightly inferior to those of the target, the choice probability of the target increases compared to that of the competitor. The attraction effect in multi-alternative decision making reflects the context-dependent violation of axioms that are considered fundamental to rational choice. This effect is believed to depend on relatively effortless and intuitive processing (System 1 of the dual-process theory) rather than on effortful and elaborative processing (System 2). In our previous study (Tsuzuki, Takeda, & Chiba, 2016) that investigated the relationship between cognitive resources and the attraction effect in detail, we used a task-irrelevant probe technique (Takeda & Kimura, 2014) and measured the electroencephalographic (EEG) responses to the probes. We found that the mean N1 amplitudes of the event-related potentials (ERPs) elicited by the auditory probes were significantly larger when participants chose the target than when they chose the competitor. In this study, to confirm the a priori assumption of the previous experiment, we performed an additional experiment without measuring ERPs to examine the competition between a visual three-alternative decision-making task and an auditory oddball task (i.e., the detection of a target). We examined whether or not the choice proportion of the target (i.e., the strength of the attraction effect) was influenced by performing an auditory oddball task. Because the auditory oddball task should consume the cognitive resources, it was predicted that the attraction effect would increase when the participants performed the visual decision-making task concurrently with the auditory oddball task compared with when the participants performed only the visual decision-making task and ignored the auditory stimuli.

Three much-studied findings regarding context-dependent choice warrant special attention since they constitute violations of axioms that are fundamental to rational choice. These findings include the attraction effect, the similarity effect, and the compromise effect. In multiattribute decision-making, all these effects occur with the addition of a third alternative to a two-alternative choice set. One hundred and forty-four undergraduates participated in an experiment wherein twenty hypothetical purchase problems were presented. The problems comprised three alternatives described along two attributes. Significant effects resulted from manipulating the third alternative for choice proportions, confidence ratings, and reaction time. These results support our stochastic comparison-grouping model of multiattribute, multialternative choice processes.
We propose a stochastic comparison-grouping theory of multialternative decision-making to explain the three context-induced violations of rational choice. The attraction and similarity effects are explained by stochastic comparison grouping, according to which similar alternatives are compared more often than dissimilar ones. The compromise effect is explained by the assumption that goodness is perceived according to a basic psychophysical function, in addition to the comparison grouping mechanism.
In order to further test the theoretical assumptions of our model, we formulated an experiment to study the role of eye movement in multiattribute, multialternative processes. We used an eye movement recorder to examine the underlying cognitive process of these context effects in multiattribute decision-making. Seventeen undergraduates participated in an experiment where they were presented with twelve hypothetical purchase problems comprising three alternatives described along two attributes. Significant effects resulted from manipulating the third alternative for choice proportions, fixation duration, and frequency of saccade. These results support our stochastic comparison-grouping model of multiattribute decision-making processes.

This research demonstrates syntactic effects in resolving lexical ambiguity in Japanese, an S-O-V language. In particular, the effect of a postpositional particle on the semantic access of sentence-final ambiguous verbs in two kinds of sentences, (a) S-ga-V sentences (subject, subjective postpositional particle, and ambiguous verb) and (b) O-wo-V sentences (object, objective postpositional particle, and ambiguous verb), will be demonstrated. In this research, The postpositional particles are designed to disambiguate the verbs' meanings as (a) S-ga-Vi. (intransitive verb) or (b) O-wo-Vt. (transitive verb).
A cross-modal priming method was used in which a target noun was visually presented by Kanji characters one-syllable before the end, or immediately after the end, of a sentence-final verb presented auditorily. One target noun was related to both the prime verb's meaning and the postpositional particle used (context-dependent), while another target noun was related to only the prime verb's meaning, but it was unrelated to the postpositional particle used (context-independent), and a third target was unrelated to both of the verb's and the particle's meaning. For this analysis, we hand coded the data of naming latencies based on digital spectrograms of subjects' voices, because the voice key measure has been considered unsuitable to measure naming latency accurately.
This research has been pursued with reference to the constraint-based lexicalist approach. The parallel distributed processing (PDP) models (connectionist models) of disambiguation are well suited to implement this constraint-based lexicalist view that human natural language understanding involves constraint-satisfaction mechanisms. We performed a computer simulation of this experiment using our PDP model. Consistent with experimental data, the PDP model can successfully simulate the effect of context-dependent and context-independent frequencies of ambiguous verbs in the time-course of activation.

A computerized classroom teaching and managing program system was developed for the Niiza campus equipment.Up to 162 students can use the personal computer for individual learning. Instruction, practice of word processing, statistical analysis of survey data, and writing report were made through the communication between teacher and students' machine. Students' response and reaction time were recorded and collected every class hour. Questionnaire survey were made at the beginning and the closing day of the class. Analysis of these collected data indicates the new program system was well-worked, and computer -aided instruction can greatly raise students' learning motivation and achievement of computer literacy.
