We present a systematic construction of the discrete KP hierarchy in terms of Sato-Wilson-type shift operators. Reductions of the equations in this hierarchy to 1+1-dimensional integrable lattice systems are considered, and the problems that arise with regard to the symmetry algebra underlying the reduced systems as well as the Ultradiscretizability of these systems are discussed. A scheme for constructing ultradiscretizable reductions that give rise to Yang-Baxter maps is explained in two explicit examples.

We construct special solutions to the rational quantum Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation associated with the Lie algebra gl(N). The main ingredient is a special class of the shifted non-symmetric Jack polynomials. It may be regarded as a shifted version of the singular polynomials studied by Dunkl. We prove that our solutions contain those obtained as a scaling limit of matrix elements of the vertex operators of level one.

Scaling symmetry of (gl) over cap (n)-type Drinfel'd-Sokolov hierarchy is investigated. Applying similarity reduction to the hierarchy, one can obtain the Schlesinger equation with (n + 1) regular singularities. Especially in the case of n = 3, the hierarchy contains the three-wave resonant system and the similarity reduction gives the generic case of the Painleve VI equation. We also discuss Weyl group symmetry of the hierarchy.

We study a similarity reduction of the modified Yajima-Oikawa hierarchy. The hierarchy is associated with a non-standard Heisenberg subalgebra in the affine Lie algebra of type A2(1)The system of equations for self-similar solutions is presented as a Hamiltonian system of degree of freedom 2, and admits a group of Bäcklund transformations isomorphic to the affine Weyl group of type A2(1). We show that the system is equivalent to a two-parameter family of the fifth Painlevé equation.

We present a novel differential-difference system in (2 + 1)-dimensional space-time (one discrete, two continuum), arising from Bogoyavlensky's (2 + 1)-dimensional Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy. Our method is based on the bilinear identity of the hierarchy, which is related to the vertex-operator representation of the toroidal Lie algebra, s-fraktur sign and l-fractur signtor2.

Shock wave in a random system has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. A nonlinear LC ladder circuit with random inhomogeneity of linear inductor in series branch has been studied. The circuit is equivalent to a random Toda lattice. It is shown theoretically that wave propagation in the system is described by the Burgers equation in the case of strong randomness with weak nonlinearity. The transition from an oscillatory shock wave to a shock wave has been observed on a random LC ladder circuit experimentally. The velocity and width of shock wave agree with the theoretical prediction from the Burgers equation in a region of strong randomness.

In this project, the following three topics have been studied:(a)discrete models of curve deformation with extension and external force, (b)time discrete model of deformation of layer, (c) discrete model of one-dimensional elastic rod. As to (a) we succeeded in constructing a new discrete model of the curve shortening equation and discrete local induction equation. For (b) we obtained the bilinearization of the complex Dym equation describing the Hele-Shaw flow, and also succeeded in discretization of the Broadbridge-White model for the one-dimensional soil water infiltration and its numerical simulation. Regarding (c) we succeeded in formulating the integrable discrete model of the Euler's elastic curves by the discrete variational principle. Further we have shown that the elastic curves in the similarity geometry are nothing but the log-aesthetic curves used in the industrial design, and gave a sound mathematical foundation for their generalization.

      This research project aims to extend the theory of integrable systems and special functions. We have focused mainly on applications to differential geometry and combinatorics, and obtained the following results;
      (1) Goldstein and Petrich introduced a hierarchy of equations that governs isoperimetric deformation of plane curves. We have revealed that the Goldstein-Petrich hierarchy is indeed a reduced case of the Toda lattice hierarchy. (2) We have studied rigged configurations from the viewpoint of soliton cellular automaton. We have obtained alternative proof of the linearization property of the time-evolution, which is simpler than the known proofs.
We have obtained still other preliminary results that are related to applications of integrable systems to differential geometry and combinatorics. We will investigate them further in near future.

We study the classification of the solutions to the reflection equation for Cremmer-Gervais R-matrix in N=3 case. The R-matrix of Cremmer-Gervais type is obtained from Uq(sl_N) through the theory of quasi-triangular Hopf algebras of Drinfeld as solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation. There are only two types of the R-matrices which are obatained through the theory of quasi-triangular Hopf algebras. One is the series of Belavin' s R-matrices, and the other is the series of Cremmer-Gervais type. The algebraic structures of the solutions to the reflection equations are not well understood. We have only two cases in which all solutions to the reflection equation are known, (1) N=2 Belavin' s elliptic R-matrix (eight-vertex case), and (2) N=3 trigonomerically degenerated Belavin' s R-matix case. In order to understand the algebraic structure in solutions to the reflection equation, we study the case of N=3 Cremmer-Gervais R-matix case (with Kohei MOTEGI). The N=2 Cremmer-Gervais R-matrix is only the degenerated N=2 Belavin' s elliptic R-matrix.
The solution space of the reflection equation to the N=3 Cremmer-Gervais R-matrix obtained through this study is described by the rational surface in projective spaces. In the case of the N=3 trigonometric R-matrix, the parameter space of the solution of the reflection equation is the Segre three-fols in $P^5(C)$. In our case there appeared two parameters spaces. One is the same Segre three-fold. But the other new parameter space is embedded in the projective space$P^10$.

The following results have been accomplished on Algebraic cycles on K3 surfaces which forms the main theme of this research proposal :
      (i) We have determined, for an example of a K3 surface attaining the maximal Mordell-Weil rank 18, the structure of its Mordell-Weil lattice, explicit generators of rational points, together with the splitting field.[2]
(ii) More generally, we have clarified the structure of the transcendental lattice, Neron-Severi lattice and the Mordell-Weil lattice, of the singular K3 surfaces which arise via the cyclic base change of degree up to six from Inose's elliptic K3 surface. Ref.[3] and in preparation, and (3).
(iii) Classical Kummer surfaces attached to genus two Jacobian varieties are studied from the viewpoint of Mordell-Weil lattices, which establishes the close relationship of automorphisms of a genus two curve with the singular fibres and generators of the Mordell-Weil lattice in question. Ref.[4].
(iv) In a joint work with M.Kuwata, we have determined the elliptic parameters and the defining equations of elliptic fibrations on the Kummer surface of the product of two non-isogenous elliptic crves., which has been classified by Oguiso by geometric method. Ref.[6].

The main problems we investigated in this research project are
      (1) To identify the zeta functions associated with prehomogeneous vector spaces with some kind of zeta functions attached to automorphic forms
      (2) To construct a theory of(local) functional equations which is not covered by the theory of prenomogeneous vector spaces. The results we obtained are as follows :
      (1) According to the classification theory due to Sato and Kimura, irreducible regular prehomogeneous vector spaces are classified into 5 series of classical type and 24 spaces of sporadic type. We identified the zeta functions associated with 4 series of prehomogeneous vector spaces of classical type with the standard L-functions or Koecher-Maass zeta functions of certain real analytic Eisenstein series. One of the results which are necessary for the proof of these results is a new integral representation of the Siegel series (= p-part of the Fourier coefficients of Eisenstein series). As another application of the new integral representation, we proved a formula which connects the Siegel series to spherical functions on a p-adic semisimple symmetric space of the orthogonal groups.
      (2) We proved that, given a pair of homogeneous polynomials on Ra satisfying a local functional equation and a pair of nondegenerate dual quadratic mappings of R^m to R^n, then, the pull backs of the polynomials by the quadratic mappings also satisfy a local functional equation. This generalizes a result due to Faraut-Koranyi-Clerc and we can construct many examples of functional equations which are not covered by the theory of prehomogeneous vector spaces. We also classified nondegenerate dual quadratic mappings over quadratic spaces and proved that such quadratic mappings are in one to one correspondence to representations of a tensor product of 2 Clifford algebras.

Ultradiscretization is a method to discretize a dependent variable of difference equation by using an non-analytic limit of exp type. Combination of this method and differentiation enables a series of discretizing process from differential to ultradiscrete via difference. We apply these methods to various equations and try to find their application in this research.
First, we succeeded to obtain a model which show a traffic jamming process by ultradiscretizing the well-known Burgers equation. The ultradiscrete analogue to Burgers equation is a rule-184 cellular automaton.
Next, we proposed a new digital equation which can show a pattern formation process. This digital equation is given by the max-plus algebra which is a base of the ultradiscretization method.
Finally, we ultradiscretized some nonlinear integrable differenece equations of second order and analyzed their solution structure. Ultradiscrete solutions are similar to the mod function. We clarified the behavior of the solutions from a view point of the dynamical system theory and obtained explicit solutions.
