The purpose of this exploratory study was to cross-culturally examine associations among three different anger regulation strategies, namely, anger-in (AI), anger out (AO), and anger control (AC), perceived stress status as the psychological antecedent, and the number of claimed chronic medical conditions as the physical health. Large samples of American and Japanese adults participated in this study. The results show the cultural differences that are consistent with previous findings in the literature while extending them to the association with physical health. Consequently, culturally different path models were identified. In this study, we found that anger regulation affects perceived stress, which in turn, was associated with physical health. Discussion of these findings and their implications is provided. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

This study examined a model of independent and interdependent self-construal, individual and collective self-esteem, and subjective well-being in a sample of college students from the mainland USA, Hawaii, and Japan. Specifically, the mediation role of individual as well as collective self-esteem in the effects of independent and interdependent self-construal on subjective well-being was explored. Results indicated that the hypothesized model fit well. The study found the direct effects of independent self-construal on subjective well-being in all three cultural groups. Collective self-esteem was a significant mediator of the effects of both independent and interdependent self-construal on subjective well-being only in the mainland USA. The negative effect of interdependent self-construal on collective self-esteem was observed only in the mainland USA. Better understanding of both universal and culture-specific aspects of collective self-esteem in promoting subjective well-being seems essential for further theoretical development as well as effective prevention/intervention efforts across three cultural groups.

The purpose of this study is to seek fresh insight into those aspects of social capital that increase individuals' health and well-being after a disaster such as the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. This paper is organized as follows. The theoretical development of the social capital is presented in a literature review. Then, the design and results of the free answers in the open-ended question is described. Finally, this study investigates whether previous findings on the bright and dark sides of social capital and psychological stress are confirmed and highlights how the bright and dark sides of social capital has affected psychological stress, health, and well-being in Japanese disaster context. In other words, the significant mechanisms and roles of social capital in a disaster context is explored. Based on the findings, the theoretical and practical contributions of this study to disaster research are discussed.

This study predicts cross-cultural associations between task and face constraints in relation to consumer complaint behaviors. Participants comprised 1200 undergraduates from Kyoto City in Japan and 420 undergraduates from Las Vegas and Tennessee in the USA. The complaint methods studied include direct voice responses, private responses (negative word of mouth and exit action), and third-party responses. We found that complaints are usually made when service failures occur at the level of co-consumption, rather than at the level of the unaccompanied consumer. The results elucidate intrapersonal and interpersonal views regarding the role played by task constraints and face constraints in mediating the relationship between independent and interdependent self-construals and complaints expressed in various ways. Discussion of these results and their implications is provided, followed by suggestions for future research on culture and conversational constraints (task and face constraints), which leads to complaint behavior, and implications of such research.

Previous studies have reported evidence that indicates differences between Western and East Asian cultures in anger regulation and its psychological consequences.
However, many of these studies have focused on a specific anger regulation strategy and its relation with a psychological consequence. Here, we developed an integrated model that can comprehensively examine three different anger regulation strategies (anger suppression, expression, and control), independent and interdependent selfconstruals as the psychological antecedent, and life satisfaction as the psychological
consequence. We estimated the model using large samples of American and Japanese adults to examine the associations between the two self-construals, three anger regulation strategies, and life satisfaction. We compared the difference in the patterns of relationships among the key constructs between the American and Japanese samples. The results confirmed previously suggested cultural differences while also discovering new culturally different paths. The results generally suggest that individual-level selfconstruals matter more when anger is a culturally condoned emotion (vs. condemned). The implications and limitations of the integrated model are discussed.

In a large national sample of American and Japanese older adults, this study investigated how bicultural identity affects perception of health and well-being in 11 individual psychological variables (i.e. positive well-being: self-esteem, optimism, subjective well-being Japanese equivalent, gratitude, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule-positive adjectives, and satisfaction with life
negative well-being: depression, pessimism, social anxiety, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule-negative adjectives, and perceived stress). This sample consisted of 1248 Americans from the Midlife in the United States survey, 2004-2006, and 380 Japanese from the Midlife in Japan survey in Tokyo, Japan, 2008-2010. Results showed that bicultural individuals (having both highly independent and interdependent self-construals) in both countries tend to exhibit higher scores across most perceived health and well-being measures when compared to other groups (i.e. marginal, interdependent, and independent). Cultural-specific aspects of self-construal, health, and well-being are explained to support the findings. Discussion of these findings and their implications is also provided.

The quality of life (QOL) indicators surrounding health, including worry and well-being, the way in which they function as multi-dimensional constructs and the potential stability of relationships were examined across universities in Hawaii and Japan. Maintaining or strengthening QOL indicators of collective and individual health and well-being is a core factor of social indicators, including social capital, and is instrumental in reducing individuals' stress and worry and increasing their trust. Qualitative in-depth interviews with 64 male and female college students (32 college students at the University of Hawaii at Manoa; 32 college students at Reitaku University in Japan) were used to collect information on QOL indicators related to health and well-being and its associated concepts. The students' perceptions were grouped under 11 themes. The data indicate that QOL indicators have an impact on college students' health and well-being. They also suggest that differences in health status and well-being can be plausibly attributed to processes associated with socioenvironmental circumstances and situations.

The purpose of this study is to test cross-cultural predictions of the associations between goal pursuits and subjective well-being among 601 college students (200 in Japan and 401 in the United States). The results indicated that interdependence in all cultures was associated with socially oriented subjective well-being. In the United States, it was also correlated with social goal pursuit. However, independence in the United States correlated with individual-oriented subjective well-being, while in Hawaii, it also correlated with hedonic goal pursuit. Discussion of these results and their implications are provided.

The concept of taking conflict personally is largely underexplored by dominant conflict literature. The purpose of this study was to test the cross-cultural predictions of the associations between self-construal, the tendency to personalize conflict, and subsequent outcome variables such as negative feelings of being criticized and motivation to improve. The participants were 457 undergraduates, of which 185 were studying in Japan, and 272 were studying in the United States. The results indicated the significant negative relation between independent self-construal and taking conflict personally. On the contrary, interdependent self and taking conflict personally showed positive relation. In turn, taking conflict personally indicated positive relation with participants' conflict management style, such as motivation to improve one's own behaviors. Discussion of these results and their implications is provided. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

The mediating role of social anxiety was explored within the effect of anger regulation on perceived stress in the national sample of American and Japanese older adults. Results indicated that anger suppression is a significant factor in perceived stress mediated by social anxiety. Anger suppression was also directly related to perceived stress. The correlation of anger suppression with social anxiety was stronger in Japan than in the United States. Understanding both universal and culture-specific aspects of emotion regulation and perceived stress will be essential for the development of sound theory, future research, and effective prevention and intervention efforts.

The purpose of this exploratory study was to cross-culturally examine associations among self-construals, comparative vs. internalized self-criticisms, self-compassion, and depressive symptoms. 1200 undergraduates in the city of Kyoto, Japan, and 420 college students in Tennessee and Michigan participated in this study. The results indicated that both independent and interdependent self-construals were negatively related to comparative self-criticism while positively related to internalized self-criticism. Both forms of self-criticism negatively affected self-compassion, while self-compassion lowered depressive symptoms. In the U.S., independent (vs. interdependent) self-construal had stronger impact on both types of self-criticism, while in Japan, interdependent (vs. independent) self-construal had stronger impact on both types of self-criticism, indicating that culturally dominant self-construal has a larger influence on self-criticism. In both cultures, internal (vs. comparative) self-criticism has a less negative impact on self-compassion. Cultural specific tests are described to support the findings. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. This paper discusses the concept of social capital as a potential factor in understanding the controversial relationship between income inequality and individual health status, arguing a positive, important role for social capital. Most of the health research literature focuses on individual health status and reveals that social capital increases individual health. However, the difficulty in measuring social capital, together with what may be the nearly impossible task of attributing causality, should relegate the concept to a more theoretical role in health research. Nonetheless, social capital receives academic attention as a potentially important factor in health research. This paper finds that the mixed results of empirical research on income inequality and health status remain a problem in the context of defining a stable relationship between socioeconomic status and health status. Clearly, further research is needed to elaborate on the income inequality and health relationship. In addition, focused, rigorous examination of social capital in a health context is needed before health researchers can comfortably introduce it as a concept of influence or significance.

This study examines the impact of social capital and individual/family characteristics on the psychological well-being of 12- to 17-year-old adolescents in the United States. The data were provided by the National Survey of America’s Families (NSAF). In order to examine the abovementioned effects, social capital as well as individual/family characteristics are included using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression models. The findings are important since empirical validation of the theoretical relationship between social capital and individual/family characteristics, as well as the psychological well-being of adolescents, is not found in the literature. The concept of social capital in the literature is only elaborated as having three distinct dimensions(bonding, bridging, and linking), which suggests that further research using measurement models should focus on these dimensions in order to explore whether a more precise relationship can be discovered.

The purpose of this study is to test the cross-cultural predictions of the associations between self-criticism and depression. The participants consisted of 642 undergraduates - 200 of them studying in Japan, and 442 of them studying in the United States (Las Vegas: 242; Hawaii: 200). The results indicated that independent self-construal in the U.S. and Japan is negatively associated with comparative self-criticism, which bolstered college students’ taking criticism personally and, in turn, contributed to a high level of depression among participants. However, interdependent self-construal in Japan is positively associated with internalized self-criticism, which bolstered college students’ taking criticism personally and, in turn, contributed to a high level of depression among participants. Discussion of these results and their implications is provided, followed

This study presents a comprehensive conceptualization of the structure of worry and its effect on social anxiety. Six hundred and sixty male and female college students in Hawaii and Japan completed a quantitative questionnaire survey, and the data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). However, the unique pattern of worry structure in Japanese male students was different from the findings of the two-dimensional EFA results. Japanese male samples are more likely to be concerned first with their personal worry issues rather than social worry aspects. Because of the economic crisis and a lack of social trust in social capital, the Japanese male students are more likely to have a hard time obtaining full-time jobs and to have to endure the burden of social pressures related to the Japanese job hiring system. Overall, the data indicate that social factors such as quality of life, social capital, risks, illness, concern and worry have an impact on college students’ health and well-being.

This study examined the impact of various forms of social capital drawn from social, cultural, and family resources on self-employment in the state of Hawaii. Data came from the U.S. 2000 Census involving all immigrants in Hawaii with particular interest given to the five Asian-immigrant groups (Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Filipino, and Vietnamese) aged between 18 and 65. The study found that social and cultural resources (i.e., presence of extended family, length of stay in the U.S., and ethnicity) and family resources (i.e., marital status, presence of children under 18 years of age, and number of children under 18 years of age) had a positive impact on the likelihood of self-employment. Finally, this study revealed that the role of social capital can enhance self-employment among immigrants in Hawaii.

The purpose of this exploratory study was to cross-culturally examine associations among bicultural self-construals, hybridity, flexibility, and subjective well-being. 201 college students in the city of Kashiwa, Japan, and 200 college students in Las Vegas and Hawaii participated in this study. The results indicated bicultural self-construals are positively related to hybridity as well as flexibility. Both forms of identities (i.e., hybridity and flexibility) positively affected subjective well-being. Culturally specific tests are described to support the findings. This study identified the different cross-cultural path processes between American and Japanese college students—finding a positive association between bicultural identity and subjective well-being as the direct pathway for American college students and a positive relationship among bicultural identity, hybridity, and subjective well-being as the indirect pathway for American and Japanese college students. The implication of the findings is there are different processes of the role of hybridity and flexibility through which bicultural identity creates beneficial effects.

While dispositional mindfulness is a popular construct in psychological literature, its nomological network in the context of health and well-being is not well established. Our study addresses this limitation by examining the relationship between dispositional mindfulness and a variety of health-related psychological constructs including personality, social well-being, and affective states. Data for this study were gathered from the national longitudinal studies of health and well-being called Midlife in the United States (MIDUS-II and MIDUS-III). Correlation analyses were conducted on the scores of various measures of psychological traits and a measure of dispositional mindfulness. The analysis of the nomological network of dispositional mindfulness showed positive correlations with both religiosity and overall well-being measures (e.g., Social Well-Being, Sympathy, Optimism, and Generativity), and negative correlations with maladaptive tendencies (e.g., Pessimism, Aggression, Neuroticism, and Personal Constraints). Finally, test-retest validity was positively verified by significant correlations among the variables, spanning a period of over 10 years. Articulating a nomological network of dispositional mindfulness has important implications for future research and practice as it enables the subsequent development of new measures, measurement models, and dispositional mindfulness-guided interventions for mental health.

This study examined the associations between two types of self-construals (i.e., independent and interdependent), self-esteem, sympathy, and psychological well-being in the United States and Japan. A model was proposed to systematically examine the abovementioned factors among two groups: 1,255 American participants in the 2006 Survey of Midlife in the US and 1,027 Japanese participants in the 2008 Survey of Midlife in Japan. This study found that independent self-construal positively affected self-esteem which leads to psychological well-being, and interdependent self-construal positively influenced sympathy, which in turn had a positive impact on psychological well-being. Moreover, there was a stronger link between sympathy and psychological well-being in the Japanese group than in the American group. There was an also stronger link between interdependent self-construal and sympathy in the Japanese group than in the American group. The results of this study provide new insights into self-construal and the differential impacts of psychosocial antecedents across cultures. Discussion of these findings and their implications is provided.

The purpose of this exploratory study was to cross-culturally examine associations among gratitude, perceived self-esteem, perceived social anxiety as the psychological antecedents, and the depression. Large samples of American and Japanese adults participated in this study. The results show the cultural differences that are consistent with previous findings in the literature while extending them to the association with depression. Consequently, culturally different path models were identified. In this study, we found that gratitude may not affect perceived social anxiety, which in turn, was associated with depression. Discussion of these findings and their implications is provided.

In a large national sample of American and Japanese older adults, this study investigated how bicultural identity affects perception of health and well-being in 11 individual psychological variables (i.e. positive well-being: self-esteem, optimism, subjective well-being Japanese equivalent, gratitude, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule–positive adjectives, and satisfaction with life; negative well-being: depression, pessimism, social anxiety, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule–negative adjectives, and perceived stress). This sample consisted of 1248 Americans from the Midlife in the United States survey, 2004–2006, and 380 Japanese from the Midlife in Japan survey in Tokyo, Japan, 2008–2010. Results showed that bicultural individuals (having both highly independent and interdependent self-construals) in both countries tend to exhibit higher scores across most perceived health and well-being measures when compared to other groups(i.e. marginal, interdependent, and independent). Cultural-specific aspects of self-construal, health, and well-being are explained to support the findings. Discussion of these findings and their implications is also provided.

Collective self-esteem was a significant mediator of the effects of both independent and interdependent selfconstrual on subjective well-being only in the mainland USA. The negative effect of interdependent self-construal on collective self-esteem was observed only in the mainland USA. Better understanding of both universal and culture-specific aspects of collective self-esteem in promoting subjective well-being seems essential for further theoretical development as well as effective prevention/ intervention efforts across three cultural groups.
