The main purpose of this study is to elucidate the regional capability development of Japanese regions through studying export structures, in order to provide directions for effective and efficient regional industrial development.
The first year's work was focused on the literature review and data collection, along with a basic analysis. I was able to conduct sufficient literature review from the fields of regional economics, evolutionary economics, and economic geography. In regards to the data collection, I was able to collect a longer period of dataset (planned as 1988 to 2020, actual collection from 1988 to 2022) so that the analysis would be able to reflect a more recent trends of structural change under COVID-19. All 125 customs across Japanese prefectures have been covered, and simple analyses have been tested with the Kyushu area's dataset. I found that the Kyushu area's dataset supported the hypotheses, but will continue to test the hypotheses with the full dataset. The abstract has been submitted to the 19th EAEA (International Convention of the East Asian Economic Association) Conference, to be held in November 2024 in Bangkok, Thailand, and the results will be presented in international conferences not limited to EAEA, in 2024.
