This paper examines the interplay between aviation technology and literary imagination in the interwar period, focusing on Virginia Woolf’s essay “Flying Over London” (c. 1928). In the 1920s, the aeroplane was often regarded as a revolutionary machine capable of transforming temporal and spatial recognitions and reconstructing the geopolitical order of the post-WWI world. Flying machines appear in Woolf’s works, such as Mrs Dalloway (1925) and Orlando (1928), where characters look up at them from the ground. Yet, her essay “Flying Over London” stands out for its unique use of an aerial view that describes the author’s first flight over London. The essay ends, however, with the revelation that the aeroplane never left the ground and that the flight occurred only in the narrator’s mind. This disclosure of fictionality challenges the cultural construction of flight in the interwar period.
The paper argues that Woolf’s narrative strategy subverts the widespread notion of aviation as an innovative experience. The essay describes the aeroplane through literary clichés, thereby proposing it as a common, familiar object. By rendering the divisions between worker and passenger, and between those who look up at the sky and those who remain indifferent, “Flying Over London” demonstrates how the aeroplane reproduces the existing class structure. The fictional nature of the flight underscores Woolf’s ironic refusal to embrace a naïve faith in technological progress. The text deconstructs the utopian view of aviation and satirises the reality of the modern sky as a new frontier for the capitalist and class-divided society.

本論は、ヴァージニア・ウルフの愛犬シャグにまつわる記憶を題材とした3作品、 「忠実なる友について」、『フラッシュ：ある伝記』 、「雑種犬ジプシー」を統一的に扱う初めての研究である。これらの作品を、特に事実とフィクションの観点から分析することで、従来の研究では見逃されていたウルフの最初期作品に、自らの理解の及ばない存在として犬を描くという主題が現れ、その主題が最晩年に至るまでウルフのテクストに再帰したことを明らかにする。犬の伝記というテーマは、他者、特に従来の伝記文学から疎外されてきた存在（“the obscure”）の生を書くことに大きな関心を寄せたウルフの「ライフ・ライティング」において重要な位置を占める。
第１章では、「忠実なる友について」を分析し、シャグの生をありのままに描こうとする本作が、新たな文学表現の可能性を模索していることを示した。犬の生をテクストに捉えようとする試みるウルフは、シャグの帰還と死という理解不可能な出来事に遭遇する。なぜシャグは帰還したのか、という犬の内面性への問いは解決不能のまま、ウルフの中に残り、のちの作品へと引き継がれていく。
第２章では、『フラッシュ：ある伝記』における、シャグの記憶の語り直しに着目した。犬の内面性という問題を再び取り上げたウルフは、フィクションを巧みに事実に取り入れることで、犬の視点からの語りという形式を成立させた。しかし、テクストから内在的に示されるその語りの虚構性は、犬の主観が認識不能であることを裏付けている。さらに、さまざまな形で描かれる言語の壁は、人間と犬の間の乗り越えがたい境界を強調する。本作は語り得ないものを語ることの限界を示す結果となった。
第３章では、最晩年の短編「雑種犬ジプシー」を扱う。シャグの記憶を再訪する本作でも、犬は何を考えているのか、という繰り返されてきた問いが中心となっている。登場人物が雑種犬ジプシーの記憶を語り、聞くという形式によって、他者の生を語る、読むという行為そのものを、ウルフは小説内に取り込み、シャグの記憶を書こうとしてきた自らの葛藤を語ることに成功している。さらに語りえない記憶を前にした語り手の沈黙は、聞き手によって新たな意味を与えられ、喪失の痛みが浮かび上がる。犬の生を語ろうと試みてきたウルフのテクストは、その挫折のなかにシャグの生を映し出している。

20世紀英国の作家ヴァージニア・ウルフの『自分ひとりの部屋』（1928）を取り上げ、女性の生とフィクション＝小説＝虚構の関係についてのウルフの思想を論じた。特に、冒頭のオックスブリッジ大学の挿話において、ウルフが引用するチャールズ・ラム「休暇中のオックスフォード」（1820）との比較分析を行った。ラムは階級的・経済的理由から、大学教育を受けられなかったが、変装を通じて大学街に溶け込む一方で、同じく大学教育を受けていないウルフは女性であることから決して大学から受け入れられない。この比較分析を通じて、大学という知的生産の場における男性の特権性と女性の疎外が、フィクション＝小説の手法によって、有効に描き出されていることを確認した。また、ラムは「エリア」という筆名を通して自らの個を強く表現している一方で、ウルフは、「メアリー・ビートン」という虚構的一人称にとって、歴史から疎外されてきた女性の普遍的な生を表現していることを明らかにした。

This paper explores the interplay between aviation technology and literary imagination in the 1920s, focusing on Virginia Woolf’s 1928 essay “Flying Over London.” The rapid aviation advancements influenced the experiences of time and space in the twentieth century. Aeroplanes appear in Woolf’s works, such as Mrs Dalloway (1925) or Orlando (1928), where people look up at them from the ground. However, her essay “Flying Over London” stands out for its unique use of an aerial view that describes the author’s first flight over London. Referring to the ubiquity of aeroplane writings— “A thousand pens have described the sensation of leaving the earth”—, she emphasises the singularity and authenticity of her experience, which she claims to be beyond the imagination. Yet the essay reveals that the flight never happened but in Woolf’s mind. Indeed, she has never experienced a flight in her life. How could Woolf write such a detailed description of a flight? Is it a sheer product of her literary imagination and ingenuity? It is noted that the biplane described, “The Moth,” was a real model— the de Havilland Moth biplane, popular in the 1920s UK. In 1928, the Moth biplane was mentioned in more than 130 articles in The Times. Especially, it attracted much attention in October 1928, one month before Woolf wrote the essay, when H. C. Macdonald attempted a transatlantic flight with a Gipsy Moth. This mischievously fantastic essay partly consists of solid facts derived thus creating “a convincing ease and élan,” as Gilligan Beer puts it, which enhances the effect of the disclosure. The study aims to elucidate the tension between fact and fiction in Woolf’s essay, placing it within the context of 1920s aviation technology and culture, and utilizing contemporary newspaper articles and resources. It will shed some light on the complex relationship between technology and modern imagination, which elusively flies between the factual ground and the fictitious sky.
