      The purpose of this study was to compare the level of Sense of Coherence (SOC) in athletes to that in non-athletes in a college population. Subjects were 716 students (315 males, 401 females; mean age 19.4±1.4 years; age range 18-37 years) from metropolitan colleges. SOC was measured by standard questionnaires (Antonovsky, 1987) including the Japanese version of the SOC-13 translated by Yamazaki (1999) which can also measure three sub-concepts of SOC, namely, senses of comprehensibility, manageability, and meaningfulness. The sports activities the subjects engaged in were also surveyed in terms of their affiliated athletic organizations, sporting events, frequency of play, successive years of play, and experience of playing sports. From the frequency of play at the time of survey, the subjects were categorized into three groups: high frequency sports activity (HFS), medium frequency sports activity (MFS), and Low frequency or No sports activity (LNS) groups. Additionally, from the number of successive years of play of their current sports, subjects were categorized into four groups: 0-2 years, 3-4 years, 5-9 years, and >10 years. Significant differences in SOC and meaningfulness scores were found between the HFS, MFS, and LNS groups (χ<sup>2</sup>=12.53, 11.80; both <i>p</i><0.01). Significant differences in the SOC, meaningfulness, and comprehensibility scores were also found between the four duration groups (<i>Z</i>=3.68, 2.77, 3.19, <i>p</i><0.001 or 0.01) with several sex differences. The results showed the possibility that sports activities related to SOC, and athletes possessed higher SOC than that of non-athletes. The findings suggested that experience of successive years of sport activities enhanced SOC. This hypothesis was discussed mainly in terms of General Resistance Resources (GRRs) and the three SOC sub-concepts.<br>

      The relationship between the degree of <i>ikigai</i> (the Japanese word for one's sense of purpose in life: Kumano, 2005) and views on life and death were investigated. Participants were 1,137 college students (635 males and 502 females). The degree of <i>ikigai</i> was evaluated by using the Purpose In Life test (PIL test) developed by Crumbaugh and Maholick (1964, 1969). We used Part-A of this questionnaire that is composed of 20 questions. Additionally, views on life and death were assessed by a questionnaire composed of five questions that was developed by he authors, which referred to life after death, reincarnation, life lesson, soul mate, and the law of causality hypotheses. Results indicated that the mean PIL score for both sexes was 92.1±16.6, with the mean female score being higher than the male. The histograms of responses to the views on life and death questions indicated bimodal distributions, i.e., responses tended to be "believe or not believe."Females tended to choose "believe the hypotheses" more often compared to males. The group that responded "Yes" to the questionnaire on the views on life and death tended to have a higher PIL score than those that responded "No". These results suggest that people who believe the spiritual hypotheses tended to have higher <i>ikigai</i>.

      It has been reported that activation of autonomic effectors during mental simulation of voluntary motor actions(motor imagery:MI)may be explained by two different factors, i.e., functions of preparation or anticipation of actual exercise(motor anticipation)and the central motor programming/planning which acts during actual motor action(motor programming). This study was designed to clarify how these factors participate during MI, utilizing two mental tasks with high mental stress, i.e., MI and mental arithmetic(MA). Several autonomic effectors' responses were compared between MI of a 500 m speed skating sprint and MA. Subjects were eight 18 to 25 year old young male speed skate athletes, all of them could easily and vividly imagine a 500 m speed skating sprint. Duration of the MI ranged from 35 to 38 sec and these were very close to each subject's actual best record(means of absolute differences were less than 0.6 sec, i.e., less than 1.7% relatively). A significant decrease of skin resistance(SR), increases of heart rate(HR)and respiration rate were observed in both MI and MA when compared to each control resting level(excluding one subject for respiration rate during MI). SR decreased during MI(mean and SD of 8 subjects:45.9 ± 17.7%)and MA(39.7 ± 16.8%), with no significant differences between MI and MA(t=1.29, by paired t-test). HR increased significantly above control values in MA(10.3 ± 4.3%)and MI(44.3 ± 18.8%). However, the increase during MA was significantly smaller(t=4.99, p<0.001)than in MI. Respiratory rate increased significantly in both MI(46.5 ± 30.9%)and MA(27.7 ± 14.6%), with no significant difference between MI and MA(t=1.82)due to the large individual variation in MI. The frequency of respiration was fairly regular during MA, but quite irregular during MI(similar to those during actual motor actions). The central nervous system which acts in MI may possess the function of activation of target effectors which play an important role in actual exercise, on the basis of incremental vigilance level induced by the function of motor anticipation.

      本プロジェクト研究では、被災者の支援方略の検討にあたって、従来の臨床心理学に加えてポジティブ心理学からの視点である学術的な枠組みを導入する。たとえば、「大丈夫何とかなる」という感覚のSOC（Sense of Coherence）、「どん底の状態から立ち直る過程」であるレジリエンス（Resilience）、それに「困難な状態からのポジティブな心理的変化」である心的外傷後成長（Posttraumatic growth; 以下PTGとする）などを用いることで、被災者のポジティブな心理的変化を各要素に分類して詳細に分析を行う。
