This paper examines the contributions of Friedrich Nietzsche to the theory and practice of rhetorical criticism through readings of Beyond Good and Evil, The Genealogy of Morals, The Will to Power, "The Philosopher, " and "On Truth and Lies in a Nonmoral Sense." In several writings and lectures on rhetoric, Nietzsche sought to rehabilitate the sophistic tradition by highlighting the evocative function of rhetoric. His conception of rhetoric as an art of evocation has important implications for the field of rhetorical criticism in which Aristotle's influence continues long after the avowed rejection of neo-Aristotelianism. Drawing on Nietzsche's sophistic view of rhetoric, the paper explores the idea of rhetorical criticism as a world-disclosing critique. A world-disclosing critique is a form of social criticism intended to provoke a changed perception of the world so that its hitherto neglected pathological character becomes noticeable. Importantly, it is a rhetorical mode of inquiry because the critic uses rhetoric as a primary tool for evoking new ways of seeing the social world. The paper argues that Nietzsche's scathing critique of metaphysics was quintessentially a world-disclosing form of rhetorical criticism insofar as he engaged the full power and force of rhetoric to unmask the ungrounded nature of reason, truth, and morality anchored in the tradition of metaphysics. The paper concludes by considering both merits and limits of a world-disclosing critique. As German philosopher Axel Honneth suggests, it is hard to provide rational justifications for a disclosing critique since a truth claim cannot be raised for rhetorically conveyed assertions. Nevertheless, it can be deemed a legitimate form of criticism because certain types of social problems can be brought to the fore only by means of rhetorical devices.

For French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, the issue of the agency of intellectuals was paramount. Bourdieu maintained that intellectuals have a fearsome form of social responsibility. Having witnessed the 'institutional misuse of authority' common among academics, the 'canonized stupidity' that was part and parcel of the educational system, the faddishness of intellectual trends and the 'cult of "transgression"' that underwrote this faddishness, Bourdieu crafted an alternative position and practice that were to bear fruit in the context of the fight against neo-liberalism during the last two decades of the twentieth century. This essay provides an examination of Bourdieu's theory of the gap between theory and practice, how intellectuals shape and are influenced by this gap and what can and should be done to challenge it.

This paper attempts to shed new light on debate education in the early Meiji period through an analysis of debate practices in literary societies that were formed in various (mostly Christian) schools in Japan. After the Meiji Restoration (1868), intensive educational reforms were made as a part of the modernization of the country. It is well known that Yukichi Fukuzawa, a prominent public intellectual and founder of Keio Gijuku (now Keio University), introduced western thoughts and educational practices to Japan, including public speaking and debate. However, he was not the sole introducer of the western-style public speaking and debate. Teachers and educators from western societies were invited to the educational institutions that were newly established in various regions in Japan. Those foreign teachers often encouraged public speaking and debate in literary societies, which paralleled college literary societies in the United States. This paper looks into existing records of Kaishikisha, a literary society formed in the Sapporo Agricultural College in 1878. Importantly, debates in the literary society were conducted not only in Japanese but also in English. As such they served to enhance the English language skills, as well as argumentation skills of young students aspiring to become leaders of modern Japan. Moreover, unlike Keio Gijuku and most other schools, the Sapporo Agricultural College offered debate also as a regular subject in the curriculum, along with composition and elocution. Seen in this light debating in the literary society was not just an extracurricular activity, but was an integrated part of the school program. This paper seeks to demonstrate that serious attempts were made to introduce western-style public speaking and debate even in the region remote from the dissemination of western education by Fukuzawa.

This paper analyzes how women’s groups portrayed the plight of undocumented migrant women in Japan during the 1980s, when their employment opportunities were limited to sex industry jobs. In an effort to evoke sympathy and support by way of public discourse, the women’s groups claimed that unauthorized female migrants deserved protection as they were pitiful victims of sex trafficking. This rhetoric of protection helped to highlight the social injustices inflicted upon undocumented female migrants, but at the price of constraining their agency. Namely, the argumentative strategy devised by women’s groups was fraught with tension between empowering unauthorized migrant women and stressing their victim status.

本稿の目的は、近代日本の討論史研究の問題点と可能性について予備的考察を行うことにある。日本におけ る討論の史的研究は非常に手薄であり、一部の例外を除いて、研究時期も明治初期から 20 年代に偏っている。 そのため、福沢諭吉や慶應義塾社中によって日本に討論が導入され、自由民権運動が高揚する明治 10 年代に討 論活動は隆盛を迎え、国会開設後の明治 23 年以降に衰退するという見方が通説となっている。しかしながら、 こうした討論史観は、単線的かつ一面的な見方であり、実証研究に基づくものではない。 本稿では、既存の討論史研究の問題点を整理した後、明治中期から大正期にかけての討論史研究のあり方に ついて若干の提言を行う。まず、明治 20 年前後に全国各地で設立され始める青年会(後の青年団)での討論活 動に着目し、明治中期以降も討論が行われていたことを明らかにしていく。特筆すべきは、青年会・青年団に おける討論が、不特定多数の聴衆に対するアピールの手段ではなく、会員相互の知識交換や自己修養の手段と 捉えられていたことである。本稿では、当時の史料を読み解きながら、民権結社による討論会と青年会・青年 団における討論会の違いを論じていく。 次に、大正期における討論史研究のあり方を考察する。大正期は一般的には演説・討論の消失期と考えられ ているが、実際は、弁論部を中心に演説が流行し、雄弁熱が高まっていたことが井上義和の研究によって分か ってきている。本稿では、中央大学の辞達学会を例に取り、当時の弁論部では、演説だけでなく、擬国会など の討論活動も行われていたことを明らかにする。同時に、大正期には、労働者や婦人団体により討論会が開かれるなど、「実社会」でも討論が行われていたことも示していく。 最後に、既存の討論史研究の大半が、演説と討論を一括りに捉え、その結果として、演説研究の中に討論研 究を埋没させていることの問題を指摘し、本稿を締めくくる。
